Training 2024 Pre-Season

i think Ross just confirmed the rumour around his unhappiness with Dougal Howard last pre-season. watch today's presser:
  • "King dislocated his shoulder in our first pre-season session"
  • "If there's a spectrum of having contact at training and there's a club that likes it day 1, i'm the opposite end of the spectrum over here. Haydn Crozier took a speccy over Zac Dawson one year and i told him to get off and go run 400m"

The worst part was that it occurred because Howard got frustrated King was dominating him

Ross on Mattaes: "we are the last bastion of great cups. there's cups and then there's cups. there's no greater cup to be won than here. Mattaes has said he wanted to get out of Adelaide. He doesn't want to be in Adelaide and wants to win a great cup"

Ratts had an injury excuse and missed finals.

Ross had an injury excuse and made finals - with arguably a substantially worse injury list.

Ratts wanted a few more experienced bodies in to solidify his job.

Ross made the hard calls to let Gresham and billing go to continue his youth approach

Ratts went away from his high skill focus of 2020 that delivered a finals appearance

Ross stuck to his defence first etho and delivered another #1 rated defensive side

We made the right call. We upgraded. We improved. We look a better club

That's what I'm saying sharpshooter.

Yeah, I don’t think we need to worry about the go home factor with Pou.

Pretty bad but not the worst.
The defunct Jewel Food Barn used to have a home brand that was just ground-up burnt cardboard. They had a branch in Moonee Ponds late seventies to about 1980, cheap food but you still paid for it with your taste buds.

Just to add to this part of the thread, I remember seeing "Russian Caravan" tea made by Twinings on the shelf at my local supermarket in the early 80s.

I thought that being manufactured by Twinings it would be an excellent product. I was wrong. It tasted as though it had been made out of ground-up Russian caravans! I never bought it again.

Branded as "no name"

I remember that. It was truely shit. It was an insult at school in those days, like "your family shops at Jewell".

To be fair that didn't work out all that badly.
383 games across 21 seasons. Some of them quite good as well.

Before that post was made, i'd already had a mental picture of Wilson gettting up early , while his housemates were sleeping, and jogging along beach road, only to think "OMG Busted" as he see's his coach jogging the opposite way.
But Rob just gives him a smile and a wave.

I guess i should give up the booze, or the drugs.

Have to agree with Ross, it would be a bloody great cup :)

Just watched the press conference and sounds like finals is definitely the minimum aim this year.

Group drills
Full ground drill
Running

Notes
Marshall is absolute quality, along with Sincs probably the best player on the list
Hill phenomenal trainer
Seb Ross in close has unbelievable hands, will be very hard to dislodge from the team - great leadership, smart and clean with good vision.
Hunter Clark finally looks fit
NWM - they need to measure him again- great skills
Dow is very good at stoppage - powers out of it
Paton trained with the mids
Phillipou is training the house down
Owens, King, Caminiti, O’Connell, Van Es
Running laps
No Steele Or Campbell
Good session

Ollie Hotton back in main training out of the rehab group. Him and Dow have seriously fast hands and are both very pacy from a standing start out of a stoppage. Much quicker than Steele and Crouch (Ross is fast in a straight line out the front)

It might be a left footer thing but Riley Bonner and Arie's left pegs are weapons of beauty. The footy just gets to where it's being aimed quicker than the rest.

Crouch, Membrey and Butler all off to the pool after the first 15 mins quick alternate hands drill under the supervision of D Carroll.

First time I've seen Collard. He's a light bodied whippet. If he gets tackled and/or bumped/buried ... he may not wake up. That said - he's definitely got some real agility about him and once he finds his feet - he's going to make some small defenders look silly.

I think Hammer has been on the same chest/shoulders/arms diet that Pou and Owens are on. He's definitely put some decent size on that big frame of his. Still a whole head shorter than Max but that new body shape with his natural aggression will make for some spicy match ups.

Watching Liam Henry train makes me smile on the inside knowing how Peter Bell dicked us in the Hill/Acres trade. We're going to get 10 years of silk from him and he's cost us a pittance.

FInally - Darcy Wilson. His running really is a pisstake. He's so natural and so fast - he flat-out floats/glides. And he's a very effective kick to boot.

Love how The Giants paid us for the Henry price. Nice freebie.

Don't worry , none of us are in the club, its just George and his mirror but he actually thinks its another person
You obsessed with me or something, rubbish bin talking, choof inhaling, smooth brained extraordinaire?

Do I visit you in your nightmares? 😎

At least the rent is free 😎😎

All sounds good.
The only thing about Steele and Crouch, they may be slow , but they often have the ball in their hand after battling the best opposition. Lets hope our fast youth can do the same, but so far its just Owens showing that ability, very erratically.

if you get 400m for a speccy imagine the vitriol Howard would get. fmd.
Feel a bit for Howard, how many times does a backman grab a forwards arm? Lots is the answer. It was a freak accident but if Lyon hates contact before when he is ready, no wonder Howard copped it.

However twice we have had Lyon for a first pre season in 2007 where he smashed the list and we had an abysmal injury list for the whole year and in 2022 where we again had a terrible injury list. Maybe he might want to revise his own techniques rather than scapegoat a backman for making an obvious mistake.

I admire that kind of commitment. I hate losing too, it's not a bad thing.

If Crouch is on the cusp, we're doing bloody well (yes, I know that's the point lol).

This is Crouch's numbers compared to Neale's this year, not quite there with the clearances but really stacks up well. Is very, very important for us and I reckon quite underrated(albeit maybe a bit 'meat and potatoes'):
