Cats
Danger (who was in his 30's), Mark O'Connor and Cam Guthrie. Danger aside (and he was getting on) not exactly a murderers row. Rotations with Selwood (again, getting on) Atkins, Myers.

A bloody good forward line and backline that held up a reasonably good midfield

WCE
Shuey, Sheed, Yeo, Duggan and Venebles. Really, not world beaters.

Looking at that through a 2024 lenses not how well they were going in 2018.

Dogs
Dahlhaus, Libba (who was 25 at the time and not the Libba now) and Bont (who was 21 at the time) Picken, Roberts, Hunter and MacRae (Also 21)

Got on a run with confidence and form and beautifully ridden down the straight by the umps. Probably your closest one.

Id say none of those midfields in the flag years would have been rated in the top 10 midfields in the comp at the time. Solid contributers but they had a gamestyle suited to the strengths (Geelong their intercept defenders and elite forwards, West Coast ball movement and Defence and Dogs manic pressure).

Our midfield has been VFL level. Carry on as we know where you think the blame fully lies.
Just a truly horrendous attempt at replying.

Where is it you think i apportion all the blame?

There's a few ways to try and even things up re F/S and academies.

Place a premium and restrict access on either the round or ladder position.

So instead of everyone getting a 20% discount currently:

1st to 6th = Points + 20% (premium)

7th to 12th = Points

13th to 18th = Points - 20% (discount)

Or academies could be restricted based on ladder position:

Round 1 = Open to 13th to 18th. Closed to 1st to 12th

Round 2 = Open to 7th to 18th. Closed to 1st to 6th

Round 3 = Open to all

Just take it a step further.
In addition to f/s and academy picks add in supporter picks. So if a player can prove they and their families were fanatical Giants supporters for instance and want to go to the Giants then apply the same rules as f/s and academies and get them to their club.

So we put Max Hall in #40. Weird move give #37 was available.

Unless...

What about Rachele at the crows, seemingly on the nose at the minute. Plenty of talent. Big of a FIGJAM. Could be a high upside trade, would cost a first as has a long contract. THink it would be worth it as a goal kicking mid
Is frontrunner too harsh a word??

You can see the potential but is he willingly to work hard enough to realise it?

Seems to like to do the fancy things but not the 1%ers

Think he’d compliment us really well but can’t see us parting with our first round pick, especially with Dalrymple on board

Again he is a kid who needs midfield minutes when he is being starved forward. His other issue is goal kicking efficiency he just wastes too many opportunities. A good player but not really a high priority at this time in our list development.

Speaking of out of favour young kids, is Josh Ward worth considering?

Some of my Hawks mates were suggesting he would be a good option for us.

Sounds like he is a good developing inside mid, but can't break in to the Hawks side now that Day is back fit. The other players take around him in his draft are pretty handy so must have talent.

Our resident ITK suggested we are interested in a key defender from Adelaide and it seems they have 4 x 195cm types on the list. Worrell, Butts, Murray and Keane then Borlase who is under sized at 192cms. I wonder which one we are keen on, I have heard Collingwood a really eager to get Keane back so perhaps we are looking also.

I'll concede that, but the fact is that those who support the F-S rule support unfairness, and there is no denying that is the case.

That unfairness has hurt teams such as St Kilda, who have drafted 2 F-S picks in the draft era (David Sierakowski and Bailey Rice).
Well let’s hope that Prez Bassat and his co-hort from similarly disadvantaged club do their best to get the AFL to make some changes, as has been suggested previously.

The first four are contracted and the post mentioned "for free" so perhaps we are looking at Borlase (UFA). Had a pretty good debut game last year and was the only Crow to get a coaches vote on the weekend. Still only 21.

Keane has been more than handy but has a year to run, Crows would be entitled to get a decent amount back if he wants to go back to Collingwood at the end of the year.

If a team wants an academy or F/S they should be made to use a top 12 pick.

If they don't have a top 12 pick, trade a good player for it, or make the decision to miss out.
They get a great young player but have to lose a player worth at least a top 12.

Allows a team to still get a F/S, or a NGA, but if not, it free these players up to be taken by another team.
Say the Saints need a midfielder that is a North NGA. We bid at pick 6 for the player, North have a million mids, they don't match, we get the mid we need, North retain a top twelve pick for their needs. Frees up unmatched bids etc.
I am sure there is a million holes in this as I haven't thought it through, but surely to get some semblance of fairness.

Where do you come up with this crap?

Basically what the NRL have always done. There is no national draft or trades.

Yes. And I like it.

The trouble with the draft is if a club is down the bottom and struggling there is no mechanism for them to quickly turn the list over with quality talent.

They have one early draft pick before waiting their turn for their next pick after every other club gets their pick.

Unless the draft is extensively reformed then it is a harness for struggling clubs to avoid languishing for prolonged periods, unless a club has its own academy or has luck with genetic talent.

looking at the crows board a bit in pre season & they talk of him like we talk of sharman=titanic, lacks movement, turning circle whatever, never have seen much of him but it was interesting, probably would get him at little cost if we are interested

The draft and the fixture and a stack of stuff in the afl is designed to promote equality. The issue really stems from the fact that some other stuff will inevitably wind up promoting inequality. COLA and the academies in particular. Father son to a lesser degree.

The biggest issue the game has right now is free agency. I support it but inevitably free agency has always shown the rich get richer and so far in the AFL that’s remained the same.

Players deserve to have freedom to move around and maximize their earnings and career but frankly if we want proper equality clubs needs to be able to move them on without their consent too.

trade pou for a late first
We are screaming out for A-Grade talent, not trading it away.

The kid has the 'second year blues', and I'm certain we will bounce back next year. He is still only 19 and has 25 or so games under his belt. Nothing wrong with going back and getting good numbers in the VFL to regain some confidence.

I think he was joking

Of course its crap, I said that myself. What's your solution?
How about the AFL changing the points value for each pick? Currently several ‘junk’ picks in the 30s, 40s and 50s add up to a future champion. Perhaps they could make any pick over 40 worth zero points, any pick between 30 and 40 worth not much. That way the hoarding of junk picks becomes a waste of time.
