Chad Warner at pick 39 is a great outcome for Sydney but not a good reflection on Dalrymple. If he rated Warner, he wouldn't have taken 3 duds (Stephens, Gould and Elijah Taylor) before Warner and risked someone else grabbing Warner.

so what you're really saying...is that 17 other clubs recruiters are terrible because they also didn't select him with their forst few selections either?

If there's anyone who thinks Sharman isn't best 22, can I have some of what they're on? btw he was best 22 before this season, even more cemented in now.

Sharman ended the season best 22 and a very much improved player but he was dropped for poor form in the middle of the season so it's not outrageous to say he hasn't cemented himself completely.

Pressure and expectation is now on him so show he's a locked 22 player for the whole season next year instead of just finishing the season strongly like he has the past few years.

We have had much better picks and blown them. It's easy to say when we get them right. Wanganeen-Milera looked like an absolutely terrible idea at the time.

Dalrymple took Dylan Stephens at 5 over Kosi Pickett, Day, Hayden Young, Serong and Flanders.

Good recruiters don't get everything right but they don't bust top 10 picks. He did nail Chad Warner that year though so made up for it.

I don’t care what anyone says there’s also a fair bit of luck involved in drafting look back as far as Luke ball nobody said he was a bad pick at the time, but if we take Judd instead we probably win multiple premierships , the bulldogs took a punt on bont without doing that they would be minus a premiership , Geelong took a risk drafting a injured Selwood Carlton took a risk drafting a western Australian Cripps these were moves that paid of massively they also could have just as easily failed

Fans of Coops like myself would say he was always best 22, however the coaching staff thought he could do better and he was sent to sandy to develop his game. Both things can be true at the same time, and it turns out they know a lot better than we do.
If he continues his late season form for the next 6 years he gets his GOAT moniker back.

We were letting the football department go as long as they didn't ask for money but they had no KPIs. Trout was terrible. On every measure his recruiting was a fail.

Nearly nothing to show from every national draft from 2003 until 2018 and we didn't change things up shows a disregard. He was a failed assistant coach with no experience, given the keys to recruiting including a bottom out.

If we can't measure recruiters on the players they draft why have them? Just pull names from Cal Twomey's phantom.

Yeah probably true - especially if you disregard any successes.

Luke wasn't a bad pick, he was a very good player surrounded by even better players. There is a little bit of luck and recruiting is a bit like alchemy but we kept Trout despite wasting some ridiculous amount of high picks. Getting a GOP rather than star is acceptable. Wasting picks is an absolute disaster.

His best draft was 2011 his first year. He picked up Seb Ross, Nenes, Webster, Markworth, Maister and Lever. Missed Lauchie Neale, Bard Hill and Elliott Yeo that were behind his picks. Overall good haul in a compromised draft.

2012 Tom Lee for pick 12 and got back pick 24 and 45. Traded 25 and 46 for Hickey and 13 and 36. Gave Cripps and 45 to WC for pick 40 and 43. Traded a pick in the 40s for Trent Dennis-Lane. Drafted Wright, White, Murdoch, Saunders, Lewis Pierce. Incredibly didn't get one GOP out of all of that. Could have had Brodie Grundy with the Hickey pick 12.

2013. Billings, Dunstan, Acres, Longer and 48 for pick 21 and 41. Bruce for 48. Savage and pick 18 for McEvoy. Pick 77 for Delaney. Let Dal Santo walk for the Acres pick.

2014. Traded Stanley and 60 for pick 21. Paddy Mac for pick 1, Hugh Goddard for the Stanley compo, Dan McKenzie, Lonie. Did get Sinclair off the rookie list though.

2015. Traded for Freeman, Traded for Carlisle, drafted Gresham, White, Rice.

2016, Traded for Steele, traded out pick 10 to the Hawks for 32 and 23 and a future FRDP. Traded for Kobe Stevens. Drafted Long, Battle, Phillips. Rookied Marshall.

2017. Clark, Coffield, Clavarino, Paton.

Anyway I can't be ****ed writing a thesis but his drafting was way below par. His national draft picks were terrible with Seb Ross, Gresham, Acres and Webster his best hits in something like a decade in recruiting.

if we where lucky enough to get pick 8 for Battle would we swap our picks 7 and 8 with the Kangaroos for picks 2 and 22 ??? This would get us either Smith or the player I really want O’Sullivan and perhaps Cooper Hynes

Easier to take risks on top picks when you've got father-sons coming through as well, I'll bet. That old chestnut.

On the back of an incredible era of 2004-2011.

Win - loss ratio for this period would have been 70%+ and only one finals series missed (and that was 9th)

We were full of confidence to challenge again and again after a small dip.

Our drafting was what completely killed us, not the move to Seaford or any other reason.
