Strategy 2025 | Let's Construct Our Best 22 | Part 1: Midfielders

Well 2024 was a pretty fun year, unless you decided to watch the Dees play footy, but that's all behind us now. With summer only a month away from ending and Melbourne have the O Round bye, it's time to once again decide who in the squad makes up the Best 22 team. This'll mean that people will have to give their opinion on their favourite players that you don't like. Scary, I know. So before we dive into a season that's equal-chance finals hopeful and equal-chance 14th again, let's see which players the Melbourne BigFooty Board as a whole thinks our best players are. Spoilers: Someone thinks you're wrong.

There'll be 4 polls, 1 each for Mids, Defenders, Forwards and other, put up every Friday until I run out of threads.

In Part 1, vote for up to 6 players in the poll to fill these positions.

Wanted Petracca forward more, really, but still included in my six. Probably like a 60-40 split.

EDIT: Gawn, Petracca, Viney, Langdon, Windsor, Rivers.

Trac 60% forward 40% mid

Langford + Kozz spending a bit of time in there also.
Windsor, Lindsey and Kolt all spending time a little bit of time in there also but not as much

Went Gawn, Trac, Clarry, Riv, Windsor and Langdon.
Word is Windsor's going HB but rate him being up the field. If Oliver is 'back'he should be a lock in the guts and him feeding a Riv/Windsor would be a nice combo

Why tf would we move Windsor to half back

I hate this club. Probably move Salem to inside mid to accommodate it

Ive gone with Sparrow (was told he is a great player and I choose to believe it), Langford, Windsor, Kynan (give him the first 5 mins of the game then sub him off), Verrall and Campbell.

If we've got Rivers McVee Windsor all playing defence round 1 just cancel the season.

Really?!

I think Windsor would serve the team better staying on the wing. We have a enough players to cycle through HBF: Rivers, McVee, Bowey, Moniz-Wakefield, and Lindsey. I think the McVee midfield experiment is dead.

Even throw Woey Jr into the HBF mix - I think he has what it takes to be a serviceable AFL player if he gets consistent games to develop in a set position.

Our coaching staff are followers and not slightly innovative. Probably thought whats the closest to Blakey we can do with no thought behind it.

Having trouble fitting in Laurie, Langford, Lindsey, Windsor and Sparrow as inside mids.

Already had to push Oliver to half back to utilise his elite kicking.

Only way id be happy with Windsor playing some half back is if we are rotating him and Rivers in an out of the midfield. But pigs probably fly before Goody does something like that.

I've read the idea behind Windsor (or any similar player) at half-back is, they're involved in the play more often.

On a wing, if you hold your width, you're often not in the play if the ball is on the other side or through the middle.

Whereas as a rebounding defender, the ball is more likely to be in their area and they can impact more often.

Still, it's a risk. He was great on the wing last year, plus he needs to learn to defend.

There's also way more pressure on your kicking because turnovers are more costly in defence and I'm yet to see Windsor be any more than a league average kick at best, he's also gonna be asked to defend deeper as well.

Basically the wing maximized his current ability, HBF is gonna expose his weaknesses whilst adding how much benefit to his game?

Also what kind of crap are we gonna replace him with on the wing

By all accounts, Sharp and Billings are competing for the role. Needless to say, I hope Sharp wins out lol

Exactly the same. I think Viney needs to be moved to a defensive forward role. I'd throw Koz more on ball too. Use Langford in stints. Windsor looks like a legitimate 200+ game wingman to me. I think Lindsay could play that HB role. I hope we leave Windsor on the wing.
