Question: Charlie's instinct in those situations is often to sag off, crumb the ball out the back, and dink kick for goal*. How would coaches balance the need for him to keep that flair and instinct, alongside his role to contest in packs and bring it ground for the crumbers? I'm intrigued to know how that is approached.

*That round 15 game against Geelong when he kicked 5, at least 3 of those were ground balls.
Defined roles and talk.
CC’s out the back, then HM plus the other marking forwards contest (BK/JSOS, AM).
Smalls on the ground ball to the front/sides. C.Durd’s shouldn’t be flying most times.
Also depends how much space/1-1 that CC is working with in the fwd50 vs double/triple-teamed.

Bit of freshening and changing up. I have no issue throwing him in every so often to mix it up

I hope its a sign of Voss being more flexible with the side and players roles
I think the last few games of the season might have shown Voss something. While it’s good to have favourites and play them, sometimes you need to rest the senior players and go with the kids. There should be a few games next year when we say to hell with it and put in guys like Moir, Lord, and Binns.

I think that if the opposition are double/triple teaming Charlie, it means that we potentially have a couple of players free in our forward line or in the midfield. If we’re moving the ball quickly, it means that the opposition are going to create situations where, if the ball carrier can lower their eyes, they might be able to pick out a player metres in the clear near the goals.

I could be wrong on this, but have a feeling that it will be our young 'uns who will take us to the top four and the big dance.

Moir will be pivotal, if he continues his impressive pre season. H could absolutely transform our forward line. He is exactly

the player we have been missing the last few years. Motlop could have a break out year and this would be sensational to

see, fingers crossed. Apparently JSOS has been training in the fwd line, so that would of course mean he and Kemp are

playing for the same role. Or maybe they would make us too top heavy, just depends I think on how Moir progresses.

Moir would possibly be the long term replacement for Williams in our forward. Think a Brad Pearce type but an inch taller.

Our ideal forward line would be:
Moir McKay Kemp
Motlop Curnow Durdin

With Williams, JSOS, Lemmey, McMahon, Cincotta, Hollands, E. As our second string forward line. The best thing about it is that Lij, Williams, and Cinc can all sit on the bench and rotate through the forward line or the midfield.

I'd be shocked if that ended up unfolding but would be a great story. High IQ footballer with one key flaw in his game. Really think he could end up a top level defensive mid at the next level if things go well, he was a fantastic foil for Draper this year as that gritty ball winner who busts his gut to get back and help.
Hey WITG, is his kicking a flaw?

Saady little video he did(must of been yesterday?)
Loved everything he said!
Working on power/speed and creative ball movement!
Music to my ears 👌

Mots looks like he’s cut down a fair bit which is a good thing imo

I also loved Saad mentioning the work being done on speed and power. Also I’ve been pleased by ‘plyometric’ training being a focus, as mentioned in training reports. This further highlights the work being put into developing our lists’ power. Thank you so much for all our posters’ training reports; I really appreciate the time you all take to go training and then share your insights and opinions with us. Such a joy to read!!!!!! 🙏👍😊

I like it.

Reckon it may get down to Kemp vs JSOS for the other HFF spot - I'd have JSOS marginally ahead of him right now, but either way, we need an additional medium sized forward who can take a grab. Sadly missing JSOS and Martin this year, with Kemp playing down back, and Moir finding his way via the VFL. Far too predictable bombing to the big boppers in a congested forward half.

I'd also have Elijah as the 7th forward....playing that high half forward role, basically becoming another running mid floating up forward similar to the role Cotts has been playing.

3rd Tall? Maybe let H and Kemp fly and let Charlies man worrie about what Charlie can do on the ground.

Those training tops appear to be reversible.
The reversible training tops were the same last year, this years look the same maybe with a white band around the neck. When they all come out in the navy blue, each has a number which is helpful when trying to identify who is who, but the number is not re-printed on the inside. For some unknown reason, Curnow, Acres and Walshy were not wearing their own numbers, Curnow was in 45 and Acres was in 30, can't remember what Walshy was wearing. It was why I mentioned that McGovern, Cottrell and Fantasia went back in at on point and came out in singlets. They gave their tops to the NGA boys who joined in the training drills, the kid they called Jack (Ison) was wearing 11.

When they start a competitive drill, one group takes their top off and turns it inside out. Strangely they did some drills on Friday and bought out a high-vis jacket for some of the groups to wear, couldn't work out if it meant something else.

Yep I'm actually pretty excited that Kempy is forward.
With your comparison to Brisbane, I think Kemp and Moir will be our Rayner & Lohmann types.

I think Moir seems to be a bit like Lohmann in that he's and extrovert with confidence and a nice kicking action.

I'm hoping Kemp can (like you said) play his own game and have as many shots as he can get his hands on, without burning the 2 power forwards. He needs to just say F*** it and roll the dice on as many as he can if he's within range, and not worry about any misses.

Our lack of players taking set shots is more of a problem than misses in my book.

I like how we have different options and are flexible. Hope we play this way

Mixing Charlie McKay Kemp Moir Williams Motlop brings so many different options and makes us unpredictable. Then push Cripps Cerra Docherty Elijah Smith TDK through there as well

Hope to see Charlie & Kemp push up the ground at times and McKay in the ruck

IMO we looked most dangerous last year against WCE when we were forced to mix it up and were less predictable

Geelong was our best for me. 12 individual goal kickers and obliterated them through the middle.

WCE game looked great but they were genuine traffic cones unfortunately.

I’m holding on Moir yet. Talent is undeniable but this will be his first pre season. His body is a long way from playing week in week out or even putting a consistent 4 quarters together

I was really impressed with his fitness improvement last year but I reckon he’s a year away from being a regular

12 senior games from him and a 20 game injury free season (including VFL) would be a massive win

Just my read on it

Not relevant to my comment. It was the way we played and set up for me not the opposition. Geelong was good but it was predictable. We just executed well

Power/Speed goes with what I was told and posted the other day. It’s good to hear

As for creative ball movement we did similar last pre season then were very static come start of the year

I really hope we do improve this along with our ball use inside 50.

The last time we added a Camporeale to the list we did win a premiership that year. We added 2 this year!

The midfield is very intriguing

Cripps is a no brainer
Hewett injury free is a bull and does the hard things
Walsh fit can’t be out worked but needs to work on ball use
Cerra fit will add some more run and class
Smith will play round one and is something special. NDaicos with a bit more physicality
Lord looks awesome and has elite hands
BenCampo is a Dunkley type that was equal to Draper for SA without being as flashy
Docherty is a star
Elijah could really step up and add class
Wilson will play HB but can play middle. Has poise and pace
Cincotta can tag BUT IMO is an underrated ball winner and user if used properly
Durdin is my outsider. More a mid than a fwd with genuine zip
Charlie & Kemp could add real points if difference if allowed to have some minutes

This mixed with TDK who could be ranked the best ruck in AFL by years end

Looking forward to see what happens. I hope for something a bit different

Yup.
Not sure if it was yourself or someone else on here that mentioned Cowan possibly being an option through the middle as well.

To add to this:
Acres is an extremely underrated link man as a wingman - who gets up and back especially defensively
Cottrell is the hardest running player at the club as a winger and was handy around goal last year
Ollie will get some midfield time, although primarily back / wing - also has elite endurance
Williams can see going in there for short bursts once his fitness is peak again
JSOS will get minutes as second ruck who doubles as a mid that can win clearance at ground level
Motlop can pinch hit at centre clearances
Newman if preseason is anything to go by could add a hardened body and elite kick
Binns being developed nicely as a winger lets not forget regularly gets 30+ in the VFL
Lucas Camporeale may surprise a few too

So much midfield depth to be excited about
