AFL Player 23: Harrison Jones - Out of the moonboot, into the rehab - 20/5

Christian was on the list a few years until one day he turned side on and disappeared... vanished into thin air, never seen again.
I heard he fell down one of the cracks in the Showers Pavilion .

On the weekend, for me, he looked like a tall Martin Gleeson. Strangely, he's got quite large calves.

If only we could translate some of that calf muscle into the shoulders and chest.

He’s a much bigger man that Marty Gleeson. Have stood next to him - it’s a big frame, big coat hanger shoulders. He will fill out nicely in time.

Bye came at a decent time for HJ despite returning from a long injury lay off.

Expecting a much better outing than last start if he gets up. Getting km's into the legs can only bode well for the Wright / Jones partnership we haven't really seen.
I am not really expecting a lot from him now. Has simply missed too much pre season and now game time. Just hope he can get through to the end of the year and as you say get some km into the legs.

True that. I just hope to see a few nice floating marks in front of the pack this Friday night. Would bring some light to my week.

I am disappointed in Jones lack of forward craft - Can you tell me one time last night that he lead out at the ball carrier - He is too often flying for contested marks in a sea of players - It irritated me that watching McKay and Curnow lead up at the ball carrier.

Think you need to upgrade your TV.

I just love how he just floats in front of a pack. Still a bit rusty but what a tantalising trait he could exploit in years to come.

He actually lead up at the ball carrier twice against StKilda and was rewarded with marks - He needs to do this more often as movement in the forward line creates goals.

Has been a lead up forward all of his career. Only playing his second game of the year. It is a non issue. And it was more than twice.

It’s literally all Jones does. Lead lead lead lead lead all day. Keeps running up and then goes back and runs up again, over and over even if he doesn’t get used. It’s the thing he’s known for.

I disagree with this so much Yaco, sorry bro.
He's a legit lead up forward, and he marks with his hands out too which I love.

Not leading at the ball carrier is not a matter of forward craft.

If your 'craft' is you don't lead you're not playing A grade ammos.

The lead doesn't happen because the player doesn't have the fitness for repeat leads, meaning that we don't see the first from the TV, or because the ball movement is not happening in a way that allows the forward to lead into the space as it opens up.

Maybe sometimes the player sees the only space out the back and waits for the ball to get close enough and sometimes the opportunity is closed.

Its was very easy for McKay and Curnow to lead into space given the way Carlton moved the ball from end to end without any real challange in that first half.

Agreed, TV coverage does a very poor job of showing us the repeat leads from the forwards. Quite often they'll make 2 or 3 leads to generate the marking opportunity (Buddy is a good example of this) that they ultimately get given.

We sit there thinking 'why isn't Jones leading to space' but it could well be that he's lead 3 times and due to our shitty ball movement been ignored, then is unable to make another when they finally do decide to go to him.
