People s**t canning young players on NMFC BigFooty is more certain than death in Texas. And the only thing more certain than that is when the player does manage to develop and become an A grader, it will be because "the penny finally dropped" rather than physical development, experience, and opportunity.

"I'm just glad he proved me wrong"

I vividly remember him destroying the top of the ladder saints with Scott and jb watching on from a super box
Levi Greenwood also destroyed StKilda and specifically Nick Dal Santo in a hard tag. Brad Scott was watching as you say, but I don't think he had Levi tagging when he took charge in round 1, and certainly not in round 2 when StKilda smashed us by 104 points and Dal Santo had the ball on a string.

if I recall correctly we didn't really have a tagging role until Jacobs did a job on a few mids under Crocker.

Greenwood was a great contested machine which was good for big bodied mids that needed room to move. He stuck to em like glue. Jacobs the same although he was also influential offensively.

We had some ripper defensive midfielders but couldn't find consistency. It will always be a mystery.

Because I am a tragic figure*, on Friday night when my missus went out I rewatched Gold Coast game.

I defy anyone to watch that and still tell me Phillips doesn't have what it takes to be an elite AFL player.

His delivery by foot into 50 is brilliant, those little uninterceptable pop kicks on the run to the leading forward.

* I was minding the kiddo, so couldn't exactly go out and party.

There were large, large groups completely disregarding LDU in his third year.

If I had the energy, I could find 50+ messages that I vividly remember saying in no uncertain terms "he's not gonna make it".

I think the pressure is building now. Needs to take that next step. Plenty of reasons why he hasn't so far but it's time. I believe - do it.

People just pretend he doesn't have tools he clearly has. He bursts out of a pack like a bowling ball knocking down pins and neatly dishes off to another player, and people will still come on here and go "nah he doesn't have the speed and he's too small"

He has a low centre of gravity too. He’d be a hard bastard to knock off the line of the ball. Where (im not going to start) for example, you can breathe on Jy and he’ll be pushed off the line.

Allegedly, there were people within the football department who agreed with that assessment at the time.

Exactly this.

"He can't kick" ... except he's got elite inside 50 delivery by foot, I would say best in the team.

Yeah LDU treatment in his first 3 years on this board was ridiculous. He was the most exciting player in his draft year, I couldn't believe it when he slipped through to us.

Admit I was disappointed when we didn't pick Hollands instead of Phillips but based on what both have produced, I reckon Phillips has the brighter career ahead of him and will be an absolute lock for us. Can see guys like him, Sheezel, McKercher really benefiting under Clarko's guidance and stepping up as the next wrung of leaders as we make the jump back into the 8.
