If his last game is any indication, he will be a starting mid r1.

To be fair, he’s starting in the notional VFL team today. That’s not to say he can’t or won’t force his way into the AFL team, but as it stands right now it’s probably a better than 50% chance he doesn’t play in the seniors round 1.

I base it on this. And ( I hate doing this ) a few players I know have said that they don't think he's in the side at it stands currently. And they love him as a person, for the record. No one works harder.

It simply appeared they played the first and second unit they expect to rotate in the real stuff and Phillips has had a full half in the 1’s rotating in and out of the middle with Simpkin. He’s been really good. He and Wardlaw get first hands on the pill almost every stoppage.

He was good but gee it's stiff competition in the middle.

LDU and Wardlaw are clearly ahead of him. He will be competing with Jy,Powell and probably Colby for that 4th/5th midfield spot.

His inability to play elsewhere could be limiting early whilst we don't have injuries.

But it was fairly even with him, Lazz and JY, even Powell was very good. The thing with all of those mids is they're all slightly different and compliment each other very well.

I had LDU and Wardlaw as 1 and 2 clearly and probably throw a blanket over 4-5 others, Will included. He had some good patches but so did Jy, Laz and Powell. Will had a good patch in the last but the competition dropped off so his first quarter for me was a better performance.

I still think it comes down to what the structure is they prefer. If it is contested heavy they might prefer someone like Philips or Greenwood, if they want more 2nd possession then Laz has been the pick.

I thought he played well against LDU and GW in tight early and later on, when he was on the same side they had it easier. LDU gets into space more tho and so was able to use that in the first half. I thought later in the game that Warlord coming into the game in the second was (at least in part) because Will was on the same side now.

I remember when I used see some of our draft picks 3 yrs after they had been drafted and their body shape hadn’t changed. I reckon this group are different you can see a number of them now look like professional sportsmen.
