Traded #32: Travis Colyer - traded to Freo for future 4th rounder

Until he improves that disposal he just can not play.. a consistent liability.

Plus he doesn't have great vision, exceptional handballing or extreme endurance that would allow him to play another role.

Hopefully he works at it and comes good.. but modern AFL is just death by turnovers.

I just hope Trav understands why he isnt a lock in our side yet and continually keep getting vested.. so if a club (eg: Dees or Dogs to inject a bit of pace in the midfield) does offer him a contract and promise him a spot in their side, he turns it down knowing full well he is closer to obtaining a Premiership medal with us.

And all he needs to do is keep working hard ato sort out his deficiencies and keep learning from the great leaders and examples he has around him to force his way into our lineup.

Would hate to lose him.. and cmon, if Sydney are able to get Mitch Morton a Premiership medal, surely its less of a stretch for Colyer to get one in a red and black jumper!

Why would he? He's got a better opportunity to play in those sides. I would rather be a regular in a side, no matter how bad, than a fringe player at best at a higher ranked club

Unless Colyer can get 12 to 15 games, I fear that his papers will be marked. Will probably get an opportunity at a second club.

We could conceivably make 5 to 7 changes to the list with an uncompromised draft in 2013, especially if the drfat is considered to be strong.

We will know more by about June/July when players are re-signed.

Couldn't have said it better myself

Really? Wouldnt you want to push and challenge yourself to improve yourself in order to shake off the fringe player status? Then also be closer to the ultimate prize and goal of football? Winning a Premiership?

Thats just like saying, "meh Im happy playing in a really low grade, get lots of kicks and dominate instead of being criticized and having to work on my game in a higher grade."

Im a bit of a fringe player in my amateurs side and I know I can easily drop down a grade and get votes most games.. but I feel thats a terrible attitude to have and will make me stagnate as a footballer and Im just a nobody! Therefore Colyer, a professional AFL footballer should really also have that desire to continually want to improve his game and be the best footballer he can be.

Players leave for greater game time all the time. It's not just about being the best footballer he can be, it's also about how can he continue playing football for a living and possibly set himself up financially by the time he is 30. Surely any player would prefer to play their career in a successful team but competition for spots is so much tougher. If you are good enough to be playing in a successful team then great but all players are not created equally and their careers are more important in most cases.

Ah ok, fair enough that is a good point. That is the double edged sword of being a pro footballer, these guys have to make a career and a living out of it..

While I will no doubt be disappointed if he decides to leave for more opportunities I definitely would not begrudge Travy, just like I have no ill-feelings towards Houli.

Completely different you have to understand that this is his current job and livelyhood.

Koby Stevens couldve played in a potential GF/premiership with the current eagles team (although struggling now) and instead insisted on great job security more game time and more freedom at the dogs in his homestate with his family easily accessible along with friends.

Not very impressive

His run and spark were good, but I will again say that his disposal is just not cutting it. Too many shanks, mistakes and doesn't have enough impact to warrant a spot.

Yeah, wasn't really impressed with his game, didn't find enough of the ball and when he did he didn't use it very well. Guys like Kommer do heaps of work off the ball but I didn't notice Trav doing much of that.

I know he's much maligned, but I still think he has lots of improvement in him to come. His pace alone means he always adds something to the team and it's definitely something we are missing at the moment.

Plus in his defense, bit hard to fire when you're in and out of the sub position as much as he has been.

If we've been this patient with Jake, then I reckon it's only fair to give Trav a chance to put some games together and see how he goes.

That was an entertaining race against Neald to the boundary line. I was hoping Colyer would just be able to push Neald over, dude is so small.

Watching at the ground I was struck that he often wasn't in position. It looked like he was caught trying to play a zone without having enough familiarity with it (Jetta-esque). He seemed caught in no man's land a few times.

Plus he still cannot use the footy. Even when it isn't a wobbler he doesn't do much with it.

This was my biggest concern as well. He looked to be out of touch with the zone.
Contrary to others, with the little ball he had yesterday, I don't think he used it THAT bad. Could have been better, though.

Those would have to be the most underwhelming stats I have ever seen.

I would much prefer Kavanagh getting games ahead of Colyer at the moment. Much bettet user of the ball with an excellent pair of hands and is a lot smarter with ball in hand, along with having a far greater upside in MY opinion.

When you are having games of 7-10 disposals at VFL level, you shouldn't really be being considered for senior selection.

I understand that our senior team requires some outside speed. But he is not the answer, not right now anyway. For a guy who has been on out list for 4-5 seasons now, he needs to be showing signs of maturity and development, which he hasn't been showing at all this year.

I hope he turns it around for his sake and for the club, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. He should be in line for a trade or a delist at seasons end. I'm sure that a player of Colyer's overall ability and skill set wouldn't be too hard to find if we look hard enough.

People can preach about how Watson was when he first started and that he took time but he is in one of the smallest minorities in football, in terms of improving from a Poor/Mediocre level to an Elite/A-Grade level.

This is my view anyway.
