Traded #32: Travis Colyer - traded to Freo for future 4th rounder

Was simply awesome to watch Trav yesterday. Whoever has been his kicking coach must have been doing his job well. Great disposal last and this week. Hope he stays in the team and keeps it up!

I'm not prepared to give the 'tick' to Colyer yet Yoda.. my fear is still that DE (especially under the heat of the best teams in the AFL) BUT he was clearly our best small forward today.

As to the position "could he be the missing piece"... well everyone with two eyes (or even one) would have to say yes on the basis of yesterday's performance.

Well played Trav and I hope we see more of the same against the Hawks next week.

*Oh and I never hated him - I just feel his disposal lets him down too much and against good teams turnovers kill you thus making him too much of a liability* I will state I still have this fear and will need to see serious improvement in this area against the tops sides before willing to eat the pie.

I'ma just stirring mate.

I know and understand that his development has been against lower teams (Bulldogs last week, GWS this week) and the real test will come against the benchmark this week.

I agree that he really is the 'missing link' and would quite easily be ahead of Merret, Kommer and even Jetta as forwards once our stars return (Hocking, Zaka, Watson).

Trav played like a star on the weekend. It's hard not to get excited when we see performances like that, but we need to keep perspective in that it was only against GWS.

If he can replicate that performance against the upper-echelon (and hopefully next week) he will have a bright future at Windy Hill.

He better because we're actually playing someone capable of playing four quarters this week.

just wondering where you guys think he is at?
he has been on the list for 3 or 4 years now & is now 22 of age & played 27 games
from what i've seen of him on the field, he has good skills buy foot and a good turn of pace, played 2 brilliant games from what i saw of him in 2013, help turn the game against Fremantle over in Perth & played a good game against GWS. but for what ever reason always seems to be one of the first players dropped.

Doss Jab LN Degenerate

Can we get this moved to Trav's player thread?

I have a soft spot for Trav. He's a very quick player and an extremely hard worker. His decision making and disposal vastly improved this year but I think he's definitely on the fringe with us. I'd love for him to get more game time and stay on for a little while longer. Could really make an impact if given an opportunity.

We need to be able to motivate this guy to put in defensive efforts. It is why he gets dropped.

Could be a very damaging player if we can drill a defensive game into him.

Basically the opposite of Kommer. Good offensively, shit defensively

Personally I think his biggest liability is his foot skills, seems to regularly miss targets and turns over the ball. His biggest asset is his speed and ability to break the lines, can be very creative but just frustrating when he does well to evade an opponent then kicks it straight to them. Almost seems like he puts so much into the speed that he loses the ability to control the ball properly. If he can combine the two he will become a very damaging player, just the kind of mid we need and may also be able to rotate through the forward line with Merrett.

he is one of the better kicks in the side, can kick both sides of the body, apart from Watson & Goddard, the rest of the Essendon midfield struggle to hit targets

Despite the obvious issue with Colyer's kicking, his other issue is that he performs poorly against the top teams. He doesn't win much contested ball and is unable to run into space. This is nearly as important as his poor kicking.

Colyer rivals Hardy for worst kick in the side.

no one's as technically bad as trav. Hardy makes awful decisions with the ball on a regular basis, but with trav, sometimes he'll come in for a game, and have a dozen or so kicks and none of them will be a proper drop punt

Yep. Non-selection this year has had no apparent connection to kicking and everything to do with his inability to exert himself physically and run hard to provide options to link chains of possession through the midfield.

Once he got into the side for the third time this year he used the ball quite well. You can wave a magic wand and give Colyer the kicking ability of Goddard but it's not going to count for much when he plays like he did in our two games against Collingwood this year.

I think a lot of it is symptomatic of a player not "getting" the zones we play (much in the same way Jetta doesn't). Someone with his speed should be able to own a spot as a defensive forward but he can't get near anyone to lay tackles.

I also think that if he was working hard defensively and offensively and his ball use was poor we'd persist with him because it would largely be a confidence/speed of the game issue (as it is for most players who struggle to get game time). He gets so lost during game that it would actually be a positive for him to be spraying the ball because it would be confirmation that he is at least getting near it.

Emergence of Dalgleish as a genuinely viable alternative to Colyer, i.e. an explosively quick ball carrier, and, what I don't think it that much of an overreaction to, the game against Box Hill later this year have me seriously questioning whether we'll be seeing much of Colyer again.

Edit: still see Trav as the only WTF? national draft selection by the Keane/Dodoro combination (having account of talents, deficiencies and the place at which he was drafted). Not sure how a midget ball carrier with no capacity for physicality and questionable disposal is anything but rookie material.

you know you've got a good thing going when blokes like Browne and Colyer are buying in knowing they have to battle for their spots, rather than going to cellar dwellars for more game time

Yep simply flying out the door.

As JP said, if they're staying to fight for a place when there's 3 years on the table at another club, there's something special brewing.

Hopefully Myers follows suit.

Happy for him to sign on and stay.

Really think he can come on. I'm one of his biggest fans and thinks he just needs a decent crack and some games.

Experience, size and time will see him iron out a few of his flaws and he'll kick on.
