Colyer or Davey in the fp next year?

Not sure how they're thinking internally (although trav's contract has been extended before Davey's, maybe there's something in that), but I'm thinking Trav can make a splash as a small forward next year.

He's almost a combination of Davey and Dell'Olio, with the ability to run through the middle

Just wanted to say, I was at the second GWS game, and this kid absolutely killed it. Probably the best game I've seen him play. His pace is really under-rated I think. He just seemed to be quicker than everyone around him. The amount of times I saw him just arch his back and take someone on and easily beat them. I'm really happy he has signed for another 2 years. I reckon given game time he can turn in to a really damaging player.

Watching that game today (was one I missed while on holiday) and his speed is a big asset to the team, as long as he can keep improving his disposal he will become a regular in the seniors. Follow the Sydney model and use mids as small forwards exclusively. Great to see him re-sign.

IF we are serious about pushing for a premiership then the guys in the pockets and flanks NEED to be able to go through the middle (starting in the centre square let alone play on ball). Hence why we need guys like little Trav here to force out guys like Davey and Kommer (although Nick may push up in year 2 perhaps) who are really one dimensional.

After watching the gws game, I can see what TRB are aiming for. Colyer played a ripper and Kommer had a great game too, both playing forward and with stints in the middle. If they can keep that same level of performance up when faced with the pressure of a top 4 side, then we will be serious contenders.

I feel that Kommer has been getting games despite poor performances in a similar vein to Melksham; get games into the players that they see a long term future for. If Kommer can manage a break out year next year, similar to Melksham, then he will add a huge amount up forward.

Red and Black Preview, #32, Travis Colyer

Travis on the lead

Age: 22

Height: 174cms

Weight: 72kgs

Games: 34

Position: Wing/Small Forward

Fantasy Relevance: No

Look Out For: Speed, speed, speed, Helicopter punts

Travis Colyer is a frustrating case. On the one hand, his speed and ability to run with the football are first rate. On the other, his kicking (while it has improved) can be shocking at times, to the point where he becomes a liability.

At 174cms, he will always be somewhat disadvantaged by his height, but what he lacks in size, he makes up for with some serious speed.

Although the signing of Paul Chapman sends him further down the pecking order for that small forward/rotational midfielder spot, his speed gives him a massive point of difference and makes him very selectable, even if it’s only as a sub.

What to expect in 2014: With the likes of Winderlich, Chapman and Merrett all looking fit and ready for round 1, Travis will probably begin the season in the VFL, playing as a winger or high half forward.

Look for him to mainly hover on the outside of packs and receive from his teammates, rather than win his own ball, but watch for him to break open congested situations with his pace and try to run forward with the ball at every opportunity, although whether he does anything with the ball is another matter all together.

I was so excited when I saw Colyer receive the ball and burst down the wing.
I thought, this is it, he has worked all pre-season on his kicking and this is going straight to a contest.
And he shanked it.
Sums up Colyer. Everything we need, but cannot kick it to water from a boat.

It wasn't a 'one off' eth-dog.. he regularly shanks them and his disposal hasn't improved in three years..

Very exciting on the burst but turnovers KILL you, especially in modern AFL, can not see him holding a spot against guys like Merrett/Ashby based on last night...

Incorrect.

I'm just pointing out that most of his errors come from not steadying himself

He wasn't as bad as some here are suggesting, but I think we have too many players on our list who have passed him or are likely to do so with a few more preseasons for him to make any more inroads at Essendon.

I fear you may be right. Hope you're wrong though.

And I think his kicking has improved. I remember a couple of games last season where there were quite a few "all is forgiven" type posts from people.. possibly me included.

Okay it might have just been me.

Happy to admit that his disposal has improved slightly in three years.. and that his errors may be due to 'not steadying himself' but ultimately he was drafted in the same year as Melksham.. meaning that by now, after 3-4 years in the system proper, he should be considered a 'regular best 22' player where more is expected of him..

When you are still talking about the same flaws year in and year out.. then it shows me that a player is never going to 'make it'..

I stand by my belief that one of the young guys will go past Colyer and he will play less than 8 senior games this season.
