I really wish Test cricket was more flexible. Given the forecast we should have been starting at 9am (if not earlier) and going right up until light prohibits play. Wasted 40 minutes during a dry lunch break.

There's the more extreme argument of playing everything with a pink ball and using lights... but that's pretty drastic.
I get the sentiment, but at the end of the day they can’t just make the players stay indefinitely.

Seen this situation too many times. India will be saved by the rain and then mince us on Boxing day to retain.

India as it stands now aren't in very good form. They came to Australia out of form as a team collectively - let's not forget that they lost 0-3 in India to New Zeland in the recent Test series in India.

Their batting as a unit is brittle. Sure so is Australia's batting, it's brittle too but the Australian batting is going a bit better at the moment than India's batting. Plus they (Australia) have a better spread of bowlers. India are relying a lot on Bumrah.

There's no guarantee that India turn up at the MCG and SCG and perform well....they may well do but they need to turn it around and quickly.

I hear you but that is what Test cricket is all about.....pitch conditions, weather conditions etc. Survival to the next session etc. Just like a boxing match...that's what is so good about it.

India would be kicking themselves tonight IMO.

Cannot fault Australia for being right on the money each time they came out to bowl but on a day like that a batting side just has to treat each session like they’re batting for stumps and at no point did India do it.

Jaiswal I can forgive for the shot itself because under no circumstances do you block that ball - it was just terribly lazy execution and he should have had the awareness to just do what a top order batsman does and put it away for 4.

But the rest, boy you just set yourself to leave, parry, get to the next break because you know it’s coming.

The commentary kept crapping on about how it helps the bowlers: it really shouldn’t, if the batsmen are doing their job. The bowlers shouldn’t need refreshing because at no stage should they ever be tiring anyway, their rhythm should probably be getting thrown off by the stop start nature of things, the ball should be getting effected by the moisture on the ground.

Yes there are disadvantages too in that batsmen have to start again but the only one who kept making it to breaks - Rahul - was having no trouble doing that.

It was a really poor exhibition from a team who had a good chance to make the most of some good luck they had been handed by the weather

They went off for rain and took lunch early. Lost probably only 3-4 overs in that break.

Bring back the timeless test.

The lunch break is probably a mandatory players demand these days regardless of conditions or time lost.
Seems more like an historical thing rather than a hard-won player's association perk

Time to go!

I recall earlier in the thread someone saying they can’t start the next day earlier with nights notice. Like to see this happen anyway.

Some will say you can’t because tradition. Like the grand final breakfast before a day gf.
It depends what are in the playing conditions for each series but in effect play must end no later than 30 minutes after the scheduled finish and no session can go for longer than two and 1/2 hours.

Play can only be brought forward 1/2 an hour before the scheduled start of play.

Effectively you can only make up an hour and it’s largely irrelevant as no side hits the over rates any way

For squad members and staff who aren’t playing they’d be snacking or eating all throughout the first session. How hungry could they be? Having said that when you smell fresh hot food you do get hungry again.
