So a guy that made a big 100 and took a screamer to at least get rid of him but this is all on him? It's a dumb post.
Hate to say it, his job is not just to bat but to field in the slips, and is to catch Dollys when they come. His job just doesn't stop at batting. That cost us 51 runs and the 90 min it took us to finally get Rahul out. In our situation, the game situation and the weather, it was a fatal error. It has cost us, without doubt, achieving the follow on and a chance in the game.

Then picking Hazelwood when suspects and Marsh as an allrounder when he can't bowl, especially in hot, humid conditions. Our bowlers were knackered come that last wickets. If Smith had taken his catch we'd have attacked the next batsman with a harder ball and likely run through him.

It’s easy to sit back and analyse with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight but if ever there was a reason to rest Lyon given the conditions it was this test. The lack of an inventive Captain also stood out. Even though we’ve been all over them barring accidents they’ll walk away with some momentum and load up for Melbourne.

Because the series is live, we won’t swing any changes other than the obvious.

Mitch is in for being a good bloke apparantly.....total liability as the designated allrounder....
Australia have never picked all rounders - they are usually Batsmen or bowlers who are OK at the other skill - ie pick up a useful wicket while bowling 10-ish overs to give the main bowlers a rest or make a handy 30-40 in the lower order. The worst thing you can do is pick a guy who averages 30-ish batting and 30-ish bowling. You have to have a primary skill. We pick batsmen and bowlers - if they can bowl or bat, that's a bonus.

We usually pick a guy for his number one skill - either batting or bowling - Marsh is not good enough at either. The problem is he is an excellent one-day batter - so he's in the 'squad'. And he should be in our one-day/T20 squad. But in the test side, we have Smith, Labuschagne and Head who do those 5th bowler overs.

There's really no shield batter knocking down the door to take Marsh's place.

Like one of the posters mentioned earlier, australia are better off batting out the day tomorrow and saving their bowlers. Even with the limited bowling today, you could see that starc and cummins were running on fumes. The match in all likelihood is going to end in a draw, no point burning our bowlers.

No one is disputing that his job doesn’t end with the bat. But to single him out is stupid.

Without his runs we maybe get run through for 200 ourselves if we want to play the hypothetical game.

He made one error, it cost us 50 runs. The weather cost us, the Hazlewood injury cost us, the licking an underdone ‘all rounder’ cost us, Lyon not being a threat today cost us, not progressing the game faster yesterday might have cost us.

Lyon is far too one dimensional. In a stronger era of Test cricket he wouldn't be getting picked for Australia and if he did then he'd be facing the likes of Lara, Tendulkar, Anwar, Jayasuriya, Ijaz Ahmed, Laxman, Kallis, Dravid.....they'd all be using their feet and hitting him back over his head.

Most of the guys you listed did this regularly to Shane Warne anyway so I’m not sure why Lyon would feel especially embarrassed about it.

The others - well I’m not sure how Ijaz Ahmed even makes this list; he averaged 8 in India over his only 4 tests there, he averaged 36 in Pakistan and he was FROM there so that doesn’t make a lot of sense.

George Bailey can resign too. Finally, boy's club selections have bit him on the arse. Picked a suspect fast bowler, even if the injury was different, then pick an all-rounder who can't bowl and wasn't batting great, when the suspect fast bowler is injured on a hot and humid day.
💯 absolute example of tail wagging the dog.
Impotent selection panel, impotent coach.
Ussie, Marnus and Marsh should not be in the side.
Ageing fast bowlers.
I don’t care if we loose this series. Need a changing of the guard and injection of youth before the Ashes.
Seems we’ve learnt nothing from Warners protracted retirement tour.
Shits me to tears.
