No one can now whinge about our skipper being too passive and not prepared to take risks to win a Test match. If India get off to a flyer the weather is our buffer.
Innings was already gone to be fair. Don’t feel like that was the original plan otherwise we’d have seen some batting shuffling.

Interestingly that’s what kept Khawaja out the side the most early on, selectors thought he was useless against the spinners
He worked hard to change that perspective and develop a sweep shot etc. At this point I think it's pace that's doing it for him, maybe the slower ball might help him. I've loved him across his career, but he looks cooked. But they all look cooked.

Konstas looks a real goer against spin - but I'm still backing Khawaja if the WTC is in play.

I guess we will see find out about their objective from their about 5th over onwards. Perhaps they are just settling in and working out the pitch.

Yeah it is not like Khawaja, McSweeney, Labuschagne and Marsh were aggressive in their time at the crease. They scored a combined 15 off 54 balls

sans a 90* vs WI & his century last test, his average over the last 10 tests (19 innings) is 25.52, passed 50 3 times after selfishly declaring that he wanted to open, before sulking that he couldn’t do it. he’s in a form slump, batting at arguably the most or second most important position in the batting lineup. in comparison, kane williamson has an average of 51 (20 innings) & joe root has an average of 57 (18 innings). you often speak of these three batsmen as that, the three best of the modern era, but smith’s simply been a liability. stats only tell half the story, but he is selfish and can’t act as our team’s carry any longer.

australia as a test side has no forward planning capabilities, we let david warner have his parade tour for a retirement, leaving us exposed with no actual opener. our youngest player is an unimpressive 25 year old who’s struggling to make it past 10 runs. england picked the obscure jacob bethel and has performed better than the majority of our veterans at the age of 21, he’s averaging 52! (6 innings)
Completely agree with your last paragraph and this is the point I am making. Moving on from 3-4 (perhaps more if you include the bowlers) requires planning and a period of time. It simply won't be a knee-jerk reaction to the poor batting performances recently.

Given the above and the fact he just scored a century and is Steve Smith, you wont also go axing your most experienced and well creditentialed player along with the above. Smith will get to the Ashes.
