Sorry for the left field off topic question - but does anyone still see a future test spot for Jyhe Richardson?
If he can stay fit for longer than 6 months there is still potential

I'm a test cricket tragic. But a good ball, a good shot or a good catch are still good in t20s.

Just watched Behrendorf bowl the first over. Immaculate line and length, some swing and it's a maiden over.

For me, it's still enjoyable watching class play.
And equally I’m enjoying watching a very astute Captain casually knock the ball around for a run a ball 30 odd ensuring that his team wins

I realise I'm 15 pages late, but just want to say, Mitch f****** Marsh P*** off. How the f*** is he still in the team? Average of 29.67 for a number 6. Testament really to the dearth of quality batsmen pushing for a test spot. Which in turn is testament to the gutting of the first class game in Australia in favour of the Fried Chicken franchise fest.

The young fellas coming through today are the first generation who have grown up on the game as a smash and giggle fest. The current senior guys born around 1990 grew up idolising Steve Waugh, Warne, Ponting, Gilchrist et al, that awesome Aus team of the late nineties and early naughties. And test / first class cricket was still the pinnacle.

The current generation of young players grew up with the smash up derby fried chicken fest as something to aspire to. Why build a test career when you can play T20's all over the world for big bucks. And surprise surprise surprise we have sfa young fellas coming through pushing for a place in the test team through weight of first class runs, except perhaps Konstas, and who can put together a test level first class innings.

I blame Cricket Australia - Sutherland, Wally Edwards et al were the crew that really gutted first class cricket in Australia. Cricket Australia is about to reap what they have sown. Once Kawaja, Smith and Labuschagne are gone, who's going to take their spot? The cupboard is bare. Not that they will care. So long as they can promote the Fried Chicken Festival and generate advertising revenue from it - that's all they care about.
FFS

oh lets see......Greenie is injured so thats one..scored 170 not out against the kiwis batting four plus he can bowl a bit and is alright in the gully ...so there's your replacement for smith

A young fella with a baggie blue 19 year old just smashed a ton against the Indians in the PM eleven plus he is having a good shield season .....konstas for Ussie

Marnus.....still young could be around a bit but if you want a replacement....you have got Mcsweeney who bats three for SA currently opening.......Patterson for NSW scoring runs....and young Goodwin from WA has a nice technique and is making runs

So the cupboard is not bare

Yeah definitely. 28 so getting on a bit but still 7 years younger than Starc and nearly 6 younger than Hazlewood.

Will probably only play for a few years though given his injuries and action.

Excepting the oldies in Neser/Boland he's probably at the head of the queue.

The only question in my mind is whether the selectors will go full tunnel vision on a leftie and select Spencer Johnson of the whopping 6 first class games over the likes of Richardson/Morris/O'Neill

Can’t stay fit barely plays FC cricket that’s the issue. Huge talent and love him but can you rely on his body? He barely makes it through 4 overs if hit and giggle. Even in the Shield match he did play he went off with an injury precaution too. If he plays back to back Shoeld games for a good month to finish the season maybe.

Jhye has been playing 2nd eleven grade cricket and shield...and being managed by CA..he is playing cricket but is getting way managed by CA...

I agree needs to play back to back shield games hopefully 2nd half of the shield he plays them all

I mean I get why they want him in the limited overs squad or whatever but not sure right now you can pick him in a test as it is it’s a bigger workload than a 4 day shield game

Back end of shield season is crucial for him as a test prospect

Richardson is a huge talent and proven performer at international level. We have Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett in the squad for this test and he's light years ahead of those two, for a start.

As a talent maybe but those two stay fit. Doggett is in great Shield form this year. Jyhe can’t stay fit small problem when you potentially have to bowl back to back days and 20+ overs to boot not 4

Good effort by Head and Smith with a nice little cameo by Carey who’s a pretty good no. 7 .
Smith started to relax and work on timing towards the end of his innings was good to see . Not totally convincing like Headut good he touched it out and got through the just hang in there phase . Head playing like a happy version of Alan Border .
Lucky for the Indians the have Bumrah , I like his dead eye approach as he lines up where he wants to land the ball , without him they’d be struggling but then we’d be struggling without Head , they’ve probably got a bit more depth in their acting and us bowling so we need one or two batters to stand up at least , as long as others support I guess but at this stage of the series Head and Bumarah look like the two match winners and team with the most support for them will win

Pretty sure his last test for Australia he took a 5 fer, so he'd still be vaguely in the picture once Starc and Hazlewood retire or there are injuries. Has had a shocking run of injuries, however. None more unfortunate than popping a shoulder celebrating a wicket a few months ago

This is how Usman Khawaja compares to other past Australian Test Opening batsman and their final 20 innings of their careers. Its a small sample size. Usman will continue on for the rest of this series at least but it's interesting where he sits in terms of past opening batsman for Australia and the tail-end of their careers.

Reading some of the Indian reaction - looks like the pitchforks are out for rohit. Bloke is under enormous pressure to perform with the bat as well as with the captaincy.

With the potential of weather I think the better option is to bat big in the 1st innings and try and enforce the follow on. If it does rain for any length of time it will see the bowlers get decent breaks. If it doesn't rain you can have a shorter 2nd innings to push the lead out and the greater the 1st innings lead is the more freedom to smash the ball around if they have to bat again
Potentially. 350 in a 4 day test is still a big score. Australia seems to dislike enforcing the follow on these days, and even in a shortened test it wouldn’t surprise me to see them bat for a bit.

Annoys me so much the way commentators talk about declaring these days.

'India have nothing to gain batting for 45 minutes at the end of the day'

Well if they finish 0-30 then they are feeling pretty good about themselves.

Make them guess overnight on when they will have to bat tomorrow.
