Yes absolutely crucial partnership. Changed the game and really took an Indian win out of the equation. And knocked all their momentum out of them. It was also the highest partnership of the innings. Wonder how many times the 10th wicket has been the highest in a test match innings.
Turns out it’s not so rare. 131 times the tenth wicket has been the innings’ highest, 7 times in 2024 and the second time this series. (Hazelwood and Starc in Perth)

I wanted to call out Nathan Lyon's batting performance in the last innings.

I've always felt he had runs in him as a tail ender, but he's sometimes not seemed to value his wicket much, and has fallen hitting out.

This test, he absolutely blew me away with his diligence, and I feel that last wicket partnership was a massive factor in giving Australia a chance to win.

If they hadn't scored so many runs, and soaked up the clock, with Starc and Marsh's injuries, the job would have been much more difficult, the target would have been much smaller, and the time to get them so much more.

I've been critical of his bowling recently, but I reckon his efforts with the bat were superb this test.

Well done Nathan.
He almost won the Adelaide test in 2018 with the bat when Smith and Warner were banned against India.

Was 38 not out in the fourth innings of a match where the margin was only 30 runs.

Not the only example either, Hobart 2011 the last wicket partnership with Warner which fell short by 7 runs vs NZ.
The chase at Edgebaston with Cummins in the Ashes.

Has always shown the ability to play a steady innings when the situation demanded it.

This is classic Indian behaviour. Claim black is white, use fabricated evidence and a good dose of outrage to back it up, then gaslight by using that evidence as clear proof of the opposition cheating. They’ll get away with anything they can. And if busted, they’ll double down. Not the scam call centre capital of the world for nothing. They don’t really do accountability.
They are a classy bunch as well. Just have a look at Travis Heads wife social media and you'll get a good feel for them.

Something similar happened after the World Cup final too. Passion is fine but there are times where they go miles too far. Comments on the social media feed of Travis Head's wife are one such example.

Felt like India were struck down by injuries by the final test the last time they were here. I thought we had them. This time it's in-fighting and form of senior players.

Just to upset the Indian flogs even more, I hope 3 of our batsmen get bowled off no balls before they've scored in Sydney, and all 3 go on to register triple figures.

I hope at least one of our batsman is given out caught behind by the on-field umpire and Snicko shows a spike…then on review, the 3rd umpire gives it not out on the basis of visual evidence which shows a massive gap between bat and ball and that Snicko merely malfunctioned again!

There would be such frustrated confusion in the cricket media and Indian administration…they wouldn’t know how to pander to outraged Indian cricket fans without undermining everything they said only days ago 😂

Well done Nathan.

Why are you praising him when you said you’re calling him out?

medical staff: these scans say you're injured, we recommend you sit this one out.
Starc: I'm fit to play
selectors/coach: he's good to go

Players don’t want to give squad members a chance to play. Risky.

That’s a true and fair but we don’t deify our players and are very harsh on them when they go too far and ‘cross the line’ - it’s also undeniable that the Indian fans, cricket media machine and administration go to absurd lengths to protect their players from any accountability…I feel that’s the important distinction in this current round of drama

Agreed. We are certainly not like that with Aussie players. AFL however were more alike

If Sydney is a draw, so me make the wtc final with a draw in SL?

Here are the WTC scenarios:

If Australia win the Sydney Test against India, they are through to the WTC final regardless of results in Sri Lanka - if Australia were to win in Sydney but lose both Tests in their upcoming series in Sri Lanka, they would finish on 57.02 percentage points to India's 50 and Sri Lanka's 53.85.

A draw in Sydney will keep them ahead of India, but it would leave the door open for Sri Lanka to sneak through; if Australia were to draw in Sydney but lose both Tests in Sri Lanka, they would finish on 53.51, while Sri Lanka would climb up to 53.85.

If Australia were to lose in Sydney, they would need one win in Sri Lanka to qualify. A 1-1 verdict in Sri Lanka after losing in Sydney would leave Australia on 57.02 to India's 55.26. If Australia draw both Tests in Sri Lanka after losing in Sydney, India and Australia will be level on 55.26, but India will qualify on the basis of having won more series in this WTC cycle.

Call out means highlight, seems clear in the context of my post.

As far as I know, that phrase does not necessarily have to imply a negative?
I thought to call someone out has negative connotations, or disapproving of someones behaviour.

It may have evolved to also mean to give someone a shout out (positive), just like how AFL persons say Scott Pendelbury is LACONIC suggesting he is laid back.

Laconic - using or involving the use of a minimum of words : concise to the point of seeming rude or mysterious

Anyway nit picking from me, enjoyed your post and it was spot on re: lyon

Solid reasons

It's Joel Wilson, I mean, there's a solid reason right there.
Cummins was immediately reviewing, no questioning, no dithering, straight to the review, that was compelling, they all knew it was an edge. If Snicko showed even the slightest movement, none of us are talking about this.
So how does that peanut explain the change in direction of the ball as it passed the batsman, plus the fact that it suddenly dipped before it got to Carey?

If it was Travis Head or any Aussie in Jaiswals spot, I would 100% scream black and blue that he didn't hit it.
I wouldn't, though I might grind my teeth a bit that it feels as though the procedure for reviews was a bit... dubious.

I am also rather petty, though.

Plus that gutsy innings in the last Ashes series, after he injured himself. The runs that were scored during that partnership were crucial.
