As much as I love Marsh, I'll always support my Western Australian boys, but it was time to go, Webster has had some all time form in the Sheffield Shield, and realistically, what is the point of having a Sheffield Shield if you're not going to reward players who have good form?

About time, Marsh can come and play for the Scorchers too.

Where on earth has this cricket isolated meme of 'ruining confidence' by playing people at the highest level.

What's worse for Webster's confidence?

Hey mate we don't think you're good enough to replace a guy averaging 10 with the bat and bowling pies. You'll never play test cricket despite averaging 50+ with the bat and 30 with the ball the last couple of years.

Or

Play for Australia in tests then maybe get dropped for a bloke who's in the top 6 bats in Australia and bowls 145.

I know which I'd pick
Who's the guy that's in the top 6 bats in Australia and bowls 145.
And why isn't he playing NOW?

I don’t know why Australia are so desperate for an allrounder.
since Watson, Marsh has played far more tests than he’s deserved, Green has been carried through some poor form, hell even Hilton Cartwright played 2 tests.

Why not just throw Labs the ball for 6-10 overs of whatever trash he feels like serving up.
Plus it’s Sydney, Head can bowl or even McSweeney.

How many batsman would have scored more shield runs than Webster in the last 18 months?

He deserves a shot.

I remain skeptical that his batting technique will hold against Bumrah or his bowling will be penetrative enough at test level but it's not like there is a long list of unlucky batsman out there.

I think India are right to drop Pant.

Momentum is crucial in sport and bad decisions should be judged much more harshly if it leads to a loss of momentum or increased pressure on the team.

If India were clearly up it doesn't matter too much if Pant throws his wicket away for 30 but in the context of the game I think his dismissals were key in costing India the win

Marsh starved of opportunity with the ball after the first test. Yes he got carted in the second innings of that test but apart from Hazelwood, so did everyone else. When he was bowling well (first innings) Captain Cummins dragged him after only letting him bowl 5 overs. He had figures of 2 for 12 at that stage which was better than what Cummins was producing (0 for 41 after 11 overs).

Selfish captain.

This is what worries me picking underdone players it’s a risk and they have gone the Webster bowling option as insurance imo
Hopefully we win the toss and bat for 3 days - Mitch should be good to go by Monday :).

News he was injured heading into the 3rd Test so likely did something in the 2nd Test but that probably didn't affect his shit batting that much.......

Then you could bring in someone like Peter Handscomb who does well on sub-continent conditions for the number 6 spot. Marsh doesn't have to come to Sri Lanka but I certainly would've stuck with a winning formula and winning team for Sydney.
So you’d have held on to a bloke averaging 10 and not bowling much instead of giving a 31 yo AR who has good shield stats this year and outstanding shield stats last year? Why on earth would you do that.

On handscomb, he can also be picked for SL, but he’s hardly the same type of player

I'd be fine with Sean Abbott getting a crack I think he cops some perplexing reactions on here.
I marvel at him. If I'd been involved with that Shield tragedy I doubt I'd be still playing cricket.

No it’s not worth changing the date- do you realise how important this test is for fundraising alone? You are cutting off half the crowd by playing it when the majority are working. At least in the new year a vast majority are still on holidays.
ummm nah luke... you would rather the test washed out because you have time off ??

The article is pretty valid imo....

fundraising ??? you can fundraise on other dates

Cutting half the crowd ??? Sydney biggest city population in Aus really shouldn't effect the crowd sizes as you have the biggest population IMO compared to the other cites Perth Brisbane ...that hosts test during the working period and what does the SCG hold 50k?...you really should get a decent crowd size whenever it is held due to your population.

Facts are holding the test in the new year increases the chance of washouts....I think the SCG is the number one venue in the world for days lost due to weather in the past 10/20 years. That was one of the major reasons the SA govt tried hard to get the new years tests...

Out of all test venues to be changed in regards to dates in Aus I think the SCG tops this list..... its just tradition keeping it there IMO

Webster is likely to be another 1-5 test bog average player who is reasonable at state level but is unable to dominate at test level. Cupboard must be bare as.
Maybe, or maybe he actually forges a solid test career late on. Heck even if he doesn’t cement a spot, maybe he just shows he is test standard and can be a really solid injury back up going forward.

How about giving him a go before writing him off, especially when you even admitted you know barely anything about him?
