Not really, without JHF we still would have done the trade that got us Wardlaw. It just would have been a simpler 3-way with WC and GWS. Our part being 1,6 for 2,3 and maybe some late pick swaps. There were a few moving parts with Thomas being an academy pick and the trades we did re Polec so I don't even want to get into the "what ifs" on that one.
But with Horne-Francis and Phillips, let's say we did things differently. Let's say we accepted the proposed trade with Adelaide for JHF (pick 6 in 2021, along with pick 6 + 18 in 2022) and we drafted Logan McDonald instead of Phillips. Would we have seen more wins? And would we be watching JHF play for the Crows and wondering whether we'd made a terrible mistake?
With those Adelaide picks, we may have taken Rachele, Humphrey, and Weddle. That's if our draft rankings matched exactly with the clubs who ended up with those picks so it's a big if. Instead, we have Wardlaw and Goad.
Logan mcdonald had multiple clubs offering multiple years at good dollars, we can bag him all we like because he's not here but the bloke we picked had zero interest last year from anyone and will be delisted at years end, facts. Not really, without JHF we still would have done the trade that got us Wardlaw. It was a good save from what could have been a disaster. But in the end, knocking back the Adelaide offer cost us the Rachele pick and pushed a late first back a year or two.
I'm not so concerned about not taking McDonald over Will, I don't rate either and it was a dud draft. That draft and trade period as a whole was a shocker for us. Of the nine players we brought in, five are gone and only Corr could be considered a success, with the jury still out on Powell and Ford.Logan mcdonald had multiple clubs offering multiple years at good dollars, we can bag him all we like because he's not here but the bloke we picked had zero interest last year from anyone and will be delisted at years end, facts.
Curtis doesn’t play like a true small forward IMO. He also stands at around 185cm and taller than a large chunk of our inside mids. Make of that what you will. :stern lookPaul Curtis is pretty decent IMO
You banana. What sort of interest have we shown in quality small forwards over the years? You listed a bunch of midfielders. Deflecting again. Eddie Betts would’ve been the last small forward I recall we tried to entice to the club. How many quality small forwards have we drafted? Zero. Have we picked up any diamond in the rough small forwards? No as it currently stands. Crafty and Spicer were poor choices. Jury is out on RHJ. Kid we picked up from Sydney hasn’t played a game and who the F knows with The Threshold. Over the years we have placed no emphasis on recruiting quality small forwards. Deflect all you like. It’s amusing. The truth is staring you in the face. :stern lookSo by process of logic, you think we failed to recruit these players because we didn't try hard enough? Or we didn't show enough interest? Well, all I can say to that is showing a lot of interest in the likes of Josh Kelly, Dustin Martin, Andrew Gaff etc didn't guarantee that we got what we wanted.
Perhaps the best thing we could do, instead of just trying or showing interest, is we could make the club a more stable and attractive work environment with a young list full to the brim with top end talent and potential. That might help us attract available free agents and out of contract players. So yeah, why don't we do that?
Noticeably bigger in the shoulders already.

Needs continued bulk in the limbs.
No names, but was talking to a reasonably recently retired North Melbourne player over the Christmas period who mentioned to me he things Duursma could end up being the best of all the current kids, and that theres others in the club who think that way too.
I nearly fell over. He thinks he ends up as a tall mid in the mold of Bont and Fyfe.
If thats where the thoughts are internally we need to do everything we can to keep him at North. He's about to have two brothers in the system and a potential brother in law in WA. There will be clubs coming at him from everywhere.
Pretty sure that we didn't recruit him to play as a mid-sized forward. I think Fyfe is the closest with the way he seems to hang in the air. His marking will be more damaging up the ground too. As a forward, teams will start to play bigger players on him and bump and block him from getting a jump. As a mid he won't get this attention and he'll get to float into contests on the wing. Jordan Dawson, doesn't quite have the leap, but has become a similar threat as a contested marking mid. Zane has a lot of work to do on his body first though. No names, but was talking to a reasonably recently retired North Melbourne player over the Christmas period who mentioned to me he things Duursma could end up being the best of all the current kids, and that theres others in the club who think that way too.

Not surprising considering some of his games in the midfield as a junior. I don't think we would have taken him as a top 5 pick if we seen his ceiling as a half forward.

Right on. I’ve heard he was intended to be the contingency plan for TT. He’s got some different tools though.
