well put, what a moment and what a crying shame they didn't grab that flag.

MUCH LOVE BJ - a massive essendon legend.
My favourite Goddard moment:

Peaked at the peak of the game. He was the AFLs best player for a moment of time.

following on from this.. i went back and looked at the stats from those GFs.
BJ had a load of disposals and exactly 162 fantasy points in each of those games.
peak indeed.

Played his best footy at St Kilda but also played some outstanding footy at the Bombers. Had a red hot dip every week and was a steadying influence throughout a difficult period at the club. Until this season, he has never finished outside the top five in the club's best and fairest and the testament to his consistency and effort.

It is a shame that it wasn't announced last week so that the fans could have said goodbye. BJ deserved a send-off in front of a cheering crowd.

A very rare combination of exceptional talent and workrate, dedication and professionalism to match. In the top half dozen smartest footballers I can remember.

Will finish directly under Riewoldt with 334 games played and only behind Burgoyne and Roo for games played in the 16 team era.

Cheers Beej, the only reason you won’t be missed is because you taught everyone around you so well

Unfortunately, the SC points for the grand finals are stuffed up. Every player was awarded the same score in the replay that they got in the first game.

He was massive in those two games though and was arguably the best player in the league in 2010.

That season he posted the 8th best SC score since 2007.

1. Gary Ablett Jnr 139.4 (2009)
2. Gary Ablett Jnr 138.4 (2012)
3. Gary Ablett Jnr 136.7 (2014)
4. Patrick Dangerfield 134.1 (2017)
5. Gary Ablett Jnr 132.1 (2008)
6. Tom Rockliff 132.0 (2014)
7. Patrick Dangerfield 131.9 (2016)
8. Brendon Goddard 131.1 (2010)

As much as I think Goddard can be a bit of a twat at times, I’ve gotta respect him... and I almost feel sorry for him a bit too. (and have done so since he joined the club to be honest) Money aside, he walked into Essendon hoping for some success... only to find out he’d walked into a complete shitstorm... but still proceeded to (and still does to this day) give the club everything he had.

He has been obviously cooked all year in my opinion (sure, he still does some great things - he’s a class player) so I’m also glad/surprised the club has had the balls to do it. Tough call on a guy who gave us his all even under the circumstances he found himself in, but hey... when it’s time, it’s time.

Class response from him too. :thumbsu:

Great career BJ. Shame you never got that ultimate success you deserved.

Sadly not unexpected, the game had caught up with him just as we are possibly in sight of being competitive, loved his passion and think he has a future in coaching, maybe not as the main match day coach but as an assistant. Had a great career, and is unlucky not to be a premiership player.

Thanks BJ.

The club is forever in your debt for your broad shoulders during the crapfest of 2016.

Despite clearly not quite being up to it at times, I would have liked to have kept him on for every second week and then a spot on the bench in Next Year’s grand final.

Not a decision for today, but I'd like to see the life membership rules (normally 150 games or 10 years) relaxed as a recognition of the work he did pulling the side through the saga.
That would be fitting.

i’m a little torn here.

on the one hand, love BJ and can not fault him one bit during his time here and wish he’d go on for another year.

on the other, pretty pleased at the club for making the right, bold move to not offer him another year.

Same. I want him to stay but understand why the club have done what they have. I'm not angry at all, just saddened.

It's also exciting though on a different level for mine. We get to see more of Mutch, Redman, Ridley and Franga.
Plus maybe even a Zerk-Thatcher in the next 12 months all as a result of necessary list management.

That's a massive win I reckon.

While I understand the sentiment that this should have been announced earlier, it’s a big call to make that kind of statement while the season is still alive - as it definitely was heading into the Richmond game. I get that.

That said he’s been huge for us, no doubt - thanks for the service and leadership BJ, in all sincerity :thumbsu:

The way I've looked at it today is when he got the club he was hoping to win a flag, and we the fans were hoping he'd help us win a flag. However we both got handed a big bag of dicks instead that year. The flag never came.

Now 6 years on I doubt he will help us win a flag next year or in the years to come. So it's a shame for him that he won't get one. But for us fans, we move on with the next player in his position and hope that they are the one that brings us the flag.
