Firstly - absolutely ok with him and managers getting him the best deal.
But, if he had already decided to leave this year, would be v ordinary not to tell that to club when we could have got 2 firsts / eg stks - versus 1 concession pick of unknown level next year. And, saying he wanted to stay.
On presumably same the same coin.
I know the club could have matched but..
I suspect he was telling the truth this year.
stk think they are in this apparently via a pretty good source. Lets see.
I think we also need to differentiate between getting the best deal in absolute $$$ terms and getting the best deal from the club he wants to be at ie/ NMFC. Let's face it you need some competitive bidding to establish a market price. Without any competitive bidding, its quite conceivable he'd have signed on for 4 years on 850k. No one would have battered an eyelid. But if 1.6m from the Saints is true, we're left thinking we're getting a bargain if he signs long term on 1.2m a year!

I notice a couple of other players using the same tactic to delay contract negotiations. 'I want to see how we improve' before committing. Is it just me or does it rub you the wrong way too? It's almost like - I am good, you have been crap, improve or I am off. I am so much better than what the team has done - bit like the school master waving his finger at underperforming students. Just niggles me somewhat. Maybe it's just the manager talking and using this as a strategy but it just makes me bristle a little.

We've been shithouse for half a decade. It's going to be on their mind when weighing up whether to sign a massively long contract (which is what the contracts at his age and quality are).

It is what is its.

I just see it as a finger wave - a threat.

I wish they would just say the truth, which is my manager is waiting to get all the offers in and I will make a decision then.

However, one thing I would say is that they are taking a big risk by leaving it to the last year in the expectation that they won’t suffer a serious injury (touch wood).

How many teams have been as bad as us for such a prolonged period? He's played in 21 total wins

Yes, there is a concern that he could go. But I'm going to trust he stays. A few months ago he said to the media, he never signs a contract until his contract year and that he trusted his manager and the club to sort it out. The media said it was a good sign for North, we all felt good that he will stay. Yet now, all the negative press that he has pushed his negotiations until next year. We already knew that...

We've just been watching from he sidelines and tend to have a lifelong commitment to the club as fans.

Compare that to the players who live this shit 24/7 and it consumes almost every waking moment of their life.

if we crash and burn this season and he leaves, and says he's miserable and wants to experience success (as well as set himself up for life financially!)... I would struggle to blame him 🤷‍♂️

Improvement is a must regardless. He is happy at the club. In all honesty if we don’t improve next year he is a part of the problem. Sounds weird to say but he is a senior player and leader on our list. He is the one who should be driving standards more than anyone else. We have bought in players because our current group lacks that.

That being said he stays

Great take.

I feel like youre projecting.

No what it really is - LDU's manager has confiscated all his pens and pencils so he can't sign his name to anything. The manager knows Luke wants to sign a North contract but he is forcing him to wait for the big offers in order to get the most he can out of North. But Luke will eventually sign a contract to stay at North. It's just about the dollars.

nah, just managers I reckon employing whatever delaying tactics to drive up price. I really don't think players think all that much about their contract week to week, that's what they pay managers for, and at some point, sit down with them and look at what options are on the table.

Don't worry about Colby.

Pretty sure he talked about hanging out to get to the mainland even before he was drafted.

Take it to the Devil's Cheeseboard thread, guys.

We most likely get Whitlock with our original second though. So where our F1 ends up is very relevant.
If the Daniel trade "works" then our f1 should be worth less than if we didn't trade to get him in.

And in all honesty, if it doesn't then we have more problems than could be fixed with just another high draft pick.

There is a whiff about that messaging (whether it represents the players views is a separate matter) of the player being subject to the team's fortunes, but not accountable for them.
