wow. Scheer. What a beast! 2nd in disposals, 1st in tackles and clearances.

Still not a horrible game for Bowes purely looking at the numbers. 3 clearances, 4 marks, and 4 inside 50s.

Just imagining them both in the centre square for the suns in a few years. Scheer the grunt giving it out to Bowes hitting Lynch on the chest.

It's 1 thing saying we want 3 established players..
But remember what happened last year.
Howe and Seedsman were ours..
Then they wernt.

Goodluck finding 3 willing and able players to join the Suns

Totally agree - personally I like the depth of talent in this year's draft so would be very happy to use those 2nd rd picks to pick some Fiorini clones to form our midfield of the future.

Rotham and McGrath would be nice additions with Bowes and Scheer
Even better if we could sneak in another first rounder before Bowes
Venables or battle would be more then welcome also.

Just watched a replay of the first half. I reckon Rotham would be gone before pick 9. He is a thoroughbred who certainly catches the eye with his speed, marking and rebounding. Be a perfect 3rd back to start his career and as he matures looks to be capable of taking the 2nd best forward and providing rebound.

Bolton and Fisher looked likely types that may be worth a flyer on if still there around our 2nd rd picks.

We can dream. It's all in Scottys hands!

Best thing for us is to have a bunch of non-academy players moving up the board, and to have a large number of good players available.
Better chance for lower bids and better chance to pick up good players in the 2nd round.

The Allies not playing that well does help moving up non-academy players. But we have to remember that the Allies are not really a team. Have not played together before the champs, will have rarely trained together, and are playing on the road. Not surprised they are struggling a little. Team over talent, most of the time.

I'd like to see a statistical comparison between Bowes' games for Queensland and his games for the Allies this year. I understand the opponents are of a higher quality when he plays for the Allies and there is more competition in the middle but Scheer's numbers were pretty impressive yesterday so I wonder why Bowes isn't following suit...

Once the Div 1 championships kicked off, we were always going to get a better idea then. We're a real show of keeping our first 2 picks before having to look at Bowes and Scheer.

Jack Bowes 2016 U18 Championships stats

Div 2 for Queensland
vs New South Wales - 21 disposals, 1 goal
vs Northern Territory - 31 disposals, 2 goals
vs Tasmania - 20 disposals, 5 goals

Div 1 for Allies
vs South Australia - 9 disposals, 2 goals
vs Western Australia - 13 disposals, 0 goals

Now I know there are more stats you can look at that tell a more concise story but you can see a clear decline in performance when you compare Div 2 to Div 1. We know Div 1 is a much high standard of competition but that didn't stop Scheer from having a big game yesterday.

We might have to start calling him Jack "Houdini" Bowes for his disappearing act in the Div 1 Championships and the future magic he will perform for the Suns.

Yeah, according to the main board he was targeted fairly heavily by the WA players, which doesn't help, especially a lighter-weight player like Bowes. Still not a bad effort to finish four touches behind Scheer, especially with some of the big names in that team not getting tagged. And I assume there is not alot of team cohesion or anything yet, besides the guys that would have played together before.

Doesn't help that he's been heavily tagged playing in a team with no prior chemistry.
You're right but the sign of a champion player like Gaz is that they are able to play well even when being heavily tagged. Maybe I'm being too harsh on on the young fella but when you're touted as a potential number 1 pick there is going to be heavy criticism when you perform like that in the u18 Championships.

However, it's good for the Suns if his stocks continue to decline in the eyes of potential recruiters.

Gaz didn't come good for years

If your the #1 player in the country then he deserves to be tagged (a complement really) and to see how he copes with the extra attention. If he was able to break the tag then that would be further evidence that he is the #1 player in the draft.

At least now teams can draft on reality of what they see and not on the hype of what has been delivered against lesser competition.

I thought the rules in TAC cup is no tagging and X amount of players must stay inside forward50 ?

I thought so too - they commented on the telecast about a 'non-density rule'. Maybe WA wanted the win and were prepared to bend the rules a little. Wouldn't be surprised if the team coaches were spoken to this week. Lord knows the umpires have been spoken to - they will do everything possible not to pay free kicks.

Well now we know where these kids really stand against the best under 18s in the country. Bowes is obviously struggling with the tagging so unless these recruiters attended the Div 2 games earlier this year they won't really know what Bowes is capable of without a hard tag. Obviously the Suns are well aware of his capabilities and they are probably hoping the average performances continue. Compare his Div 1 performances so far to the other mids that are expected to go early in the draft:

Jack Bowes (Allies)
vs South Australia - 9 disposals, 0 goals, 5 contested possessions, 3 clearances, 1 i50s, 7 tackles
vs Western Australia - 13 disposals, 0 goals, 3 clearances, 4 i50s, 2 tackles

Hugh McCluggage (Vic Country)
vs Western Australia - 27 disposals, 0 goals, 9 contested possessions, 2 clearances, 2 i50s, 9 tackles
vs Vic Metro - 26 disposals, 3 goals, 11 contested possessions, 4 clearances, 4 i50s, 4 tackles

William Brodie (Vic Country)
vs Western Australia - 16 disposals, 1 goal, 6 contested possessions, 3 clearances, 3 i50s, 2 tackles
vs Vic Metro - 29 disposals, 0 goals, 14 contested possessions, 7 clearances, 4 i50s, 3 tackles

That's probably enough to show that Bowes isn't keeping up (statistically) with the elite mids. People often say 'don't count your possessions, make your possessions count' but from all reports Bowes isn't doing either in the Div 1 Championships.

If you were Essendon with the first pick would you bid on Bowes based on those performances?

Friend of mine at the WA game said that Bowes was just going through the motions with little actual care. Looked almost like he didn't want to be there.

Might have some attitude issues.

Hopefully it is that he has a great fondness for GCS and is smart enough to know that his average performances are helping the club for the future. Plus he probably didn't want to bleed for the Allies jumper.

Apparently from all reports he was the most popular player in the AIS Academy so I would think we can rule out attitude issues.

He was also the captain of the Queensland side and if you listen to interviews with him he certainly sounds like he doesn't have attitude problems.

Recruiters watch all the championship games i think there were even recruiters from Essendon watching Bowes when he played in the NEAFL. They certainly know he can play well.

Might be a bit of.. Well I'm
Going to the Suns whether it's pick 1 or 20..
Why bust my ass off now..
Risking injury..

Or he doesn't want the pick #1 player tag hanging over his head during his whole career.
