Re Ben Davis

He looks like he has the body (height, weight and adequate speed) and critically the elite kicking skills needed for him to be an important role player for us going forward.

Rather than delisting him at season’s end as we all expected, I’d extend his time as a (downgraded) rookie for one more year and provide him with specialist coaching towards becoming a rebounding half back. Based on last week’s game, would you rather have the ball rebounding out of defence in B Smith or Davison’s hands?

The downside is that he might lack aggression, one-on-one competitiveness and the assertiveness needed to demand the ball from team mates - and hence he will likely fail, after all he’s been on the list for a long 5 seasons. The upside is that we could gain 50% of Lukosius’ potential contribution for $$ peanuts and zero draft capital.

Too late to teach an old dog new tricks - perhaps? Besides we would need to accommodate Mackay for one more year as a greater priority.

Yeah... nah. Both Davis & Mackay should be delisted shortly.

Brodie Smith.

Tend to agree.

On Davis - despite the raving about him from yesterday, he got pretty poor numbers. I'm happy to delist and not give it a second thought.

List clogger, we've already invested to many years into him. top of my list for not getting a contract.

Hb/small defenders

Smith
Hamill
Jones
McPherson
Parnell
Brown

Hope he finds a home some elsewhere as he's ment to be a top bloke.

Nope I'm one to say keep Davis, go back and look at his highlights, reminds me of Jones second game in defense back in the team.

Davis has strength (now), can play on the smalls like Pickett and has height to play on medium forwards. But most of all is quick and is already one of the best field kicks we have. He is not only pinpoint like Sholl but kicks the ball low and hard (unlike Sholl).

You needs players in the defensive 50 like Jones and Davis. Play Smith and Seeds on the wing/HF line.

Should be extended by 1 year. Delist is Lynch, Talia, O'Connor and ideally Mackay with Crouch more than likely gone. If Tex doesn't return it means the leaders are then Sloane, Laird, Smith, Seeds, Brown and Kelly with very little in between to the under 22's, you need some older heads, particularly indigenous older heads given recent events.

Leaving the squad potentially:
Gibbs (administration list member)
Stengle
Talia
Lynch
Walker (maybe)
Mackay (maybe)
Crouch (maybe)
O'Connor (likely)

Disagree, Davis is ideal medium defender. It's where most teams launch attacks so you need your best kicks across that line

Smith - wing only
Hamill - speed but don't have him kick the ball, turn over merchant
Jones - small defender with elite kick
McPherson - small/medium defender, zero offense generally, taking over Brown
Parnell - small defender, too early to tell
Brown - see Macpherson.
Milera - injured constantly
Hinge - uncertain

Those bagging Davis’s ability mustn’t have watched him closely at SANFL level over the last three/four years. He’s got the ability and a little bit of X factor about him. He might well be delisted in the end, but in my view, the club is to blame for a lot of his development. It’s actually ludicrous the way he has been treated. The crows are all about playing a debutant for only a single game then dropping them or not playing them when they’re in form for an older, more mediocre player.

FWIW Gibbs and Stengle's list spots have already been accounted for with Murray and Parnell

This is exactly why in a rebuild we should give games to players like Davis and Himm, let them play 6 or more in a row as a last chance saloon. We should have known one way or another if he was up to it considering he’s been on the list for 5+ years not play him with 3 week left and then think maybe he’s alright

D Avis has been played before however has failed to take his opportunities

The challenge is he looks good in flashed but has never really taken the next step, not just at AFL level but also in the sanfl

It's easy to be critical of selection however after 5 years on the list you would expect him to be ripping sanfl games apart, he hasn't done that. He gets his 10-15 touches, looks good with the ball but just doesn't do enough

Im ok with giving him a rookie spot however 5 years on the list and still not dominating sanfl that is the concern for me.

The people bagging Davis ARE the ones who have watched him in the SANFL, where he's been disappointing for years.

That being said, we're getting thin on the ground with mature bodies and I'd potentially keep him before Kelly.

The problem is our older players all still play the bomb it to Tippett/Jacobs game plan that we used to employ under Sando.

Laird, Brown, Mackay, Smith, Kelly and Sloane are all the worst culprits at this. Lynch at least tries to lower the eyes but half of his kicks get smothered.
Yeah this really infuriates me. And watching Schoenberg play just highlights how poor the F50 entries are with the other 3 main mids.

The combo of Sloane, Keays and Laird are very good ball winners, but in terms of vision when entering F50, they would have to be as poor as it gets. I'd actually rather McHenry in there at the moment, he may not be as refined, or have the big body, but he's always looking to hit an open player, or reward to runner in better position. We need more of that from our premier ball winners!

I like Davis, and by his instagram feed he's a hell of a good clubman. But yeah he won't be on the list next year

He should have made it or at best the club should know which was his best position. I don’t think they do, tried forward and failed and after 4 years now, tried back.
time to move on as I think he’s hit hard enough at the ball

Personally I think Davis is a bit of a tease and just won’t make it.

Having said that, I absolutely agree with your sentiment. how the AFC continually struggles to find a dozen games to give to a guy like this to see if he can prove people like myself wrong is beyond me.

I know people get frustrated when every thread comes back to DMac, but he is the epitome of what is wrong with the AFC. Before DMac it was VB who played 50 games too many. And Thommo went a season too long. All of us could see this yet AFC probably have spent 200+ games on these guys that could have been spent giving 10 other kids 20 games each to see if perhaps they do have something.

Just doesn’t feel right. Both players devastated to be leaving the Crows, Lynch sounds particularly dejected.

Both players appear to have some trade value. I feel like the only reason to play Lynch at the moment is to increase his trade value by showcasing his abilities. Why on Earth would we be wasting a starting spot in the 22 if we knew we were going to get nothing for him?

Can someone again explain to me by we’ve decided to telegraph the decision to delist them and potentially (likely) get nothing for them? Appears to be significant interest in both players.

Because they specifically asked if they would get a contract and it gives them a chance to prepare for that.

Let's be honest, Talia is a UFA, and Lynch was OOC, so we were never going to get a 1st round pick for them were we?
