Without sounding too much like a ponce (hard for me), it is cultural caché. Basically, I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine at a later date.
So, if there are any ructions / rumbling to remove him, they can stir up trouble on his behalf. In a sense, he’s conditioned them.
