AFL can't compete with the game of globalisation

Grid Iron will never take over the world, same with basketball, the American product is too good, participation is increasing though but it will never take over here, they're acquired tastes as far as I'm concerned, though basketball has the bigger reach due to more countries playing it

Look at basketball here, it's a basketcase professionally, it's a junior and amateur sport and that's it.

Football is mainly the sport of Europe and South America with their strong football background, it is growing in Asia though through the strength of the money from sheikhs and stuff, while Africa has barely no money behind it. Australia are just behind the U.S imo in the sport, if the MLS goes ahead of the NBA and NFL then that'll be a huge player.

Aussie Rules will always be number 1 here, the AFL needs to find a happy-medium with the game off field and on field then just stick to it, it's too business/$$$ oriented currently. As long as they keep pumping money into grassroots and keep participation rates high through cheap playing costs then the game will be healthy here. Football/Soccer is way too expensive still in the grassroots, most junior season's cost anywhere between $750-$2000 per participant as far as what I've heard, Aussie Rules ain't that much.

God forbid Soccer ever becomes popular here...
it already is at participation level, international level the Socceroos are the number one supported national team in this country, it's just the A-League has failed so far to attract greater support.

Although, the Melbourne and Sydney derby's are growing at rapid rates. Who would of thought ten years ago, that you could go watch two Melbourne soccer sides play in front of 50,000 fans.

You guys know AFL crowds are up in 2015 don't you? For the 3rd straight year?

Yet A-League crowds have fallen for their last 2 seasons and NRL crowds are down for the 3rd straight year.

I really fail to see what people are talking about. If there was a clear trend, then sure. But if anything the trend is going the other way.
Guess Rohan is writing for the Melbourne market. Melbourne crowds were down last season, and this year was slightly up before last round.

With 26k friday night, 23k saturday night, I dare say it may be down now.

True, some clubs are even pushing 70,000 members and beyond. So our game is in not too bad a shape in comparison

I don't know much about the Melbourne market. I assume there must be quite a lot of soccer and rugby teams drawing 80k+ on a regular basis there?

Obviously not. Think he's forecasting based on juniors coming through and the next generation of supporter/player.

Definitely nothing to worry about in the next 5 years, but maybe in 10-15 years time if the AFL don't address it.

If it's based on playing numbers, I'd say the AFL should be more worried about golf. Lots more participants than soccer.

But I think he's forecasting on nothing other than clickbait. It's sure as shit not based on any objective data. People have been advocating soccer taking over for decades, yet very little has changed on the Australian sporting landscape.

I just walked off the park tonight and can honestly say, there is no better game to play from 4 years to 42 years and hopefully 40 more.

but it is a crap game to watch. I spent three minutes watching the ManCity v Madrid game and switched back over to the footy.

I would prefer to watch carlton over a soccer match.......and don't get me started on that crap thing called the world cup

We definately need a big budget AFL game, the AFL should fund it rather than charging for the rights, its the best tool for marketing the game to kids you can get.
Agree. Soccer is on the rise amongst kids because every second kid plays Fifa 15 meaning they therefore begin to enjoy and support the sport. The AFL should look to do the same.

The AFL will always have a strong market here because of its tribal roots. It's near impossible to phase out a sport that's been #1 for 100+ years.

With that said, the code has all but peaked and growth is now extremely limited. It has a 0% chance of expanding internationally, and it's now desperately trying to market itself in New South Wales and Queensland to solidify its #1 status, which it seems to be struggling with.

As for Soccer, the A-League might be staggering now, but that's because it's still very new, and still trying to grow its roots. Nevermind the A-League though, these kids aren't developing interest in soccer because of Australian Soccer; it's because of the Fifa Games and the glamour associated with the code. The idea of playing for one of the best teams in the world like Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain alongside amazingly skilled, highly paid players is a lot more appealing than playing with the Hawks in the AFL.

FIFA 15, probably the first actual game he's seen.

soccer being so good for computer games, as opposed to afl which is a bit of a weird sport is another disadvantage afl has

it will be hard to make a good afl game

hold R1 to flood the backline with 18 people

press triangle twice to give away a 50 meter for splashing water on someones face

Think this is where Rohan is coming from. That kids in Australia can easily watch on tv a team in Europe playing live, or on their consoles playing FIFA they can establish a connection with a team at an early age.

Also AFL is losing some tribalness about it. All teams are playing in the same set of venues. Other than where they train, and in some cases not even that, most teams aren't located where they used to.

Sometimes a small pond can be a good thing to play in. Do we want a game where we have to pay millions of dollars in transfer fees to secure the best players? Where every club is in debt and only a few teams have a chance to win the premiership?

as the aleague continues to grow there is tribalism there for kids

95% of kids that stand near melbourne victory FC 'north end', for example, as amazed by the atmosphere and instant fans for life

as opposed to afl where they are now talking about kicking people out, for booing...

Still not sure how many fans they will get til it becomes a league of its own. Right now the A League is a place for up and comers to show their talent to European teams. Not sure how many kids wanna go and see second rate players or a washed up Harry Kewell. What is unique about our game is we showcase the best. not sure too many A League teams are gonna have budgets in the hundreds of millions to be able to pay the transfer fees tosecure the best in the world.

Soccer is boring as batshit. All this talk about congestion and stoppages ruining the game. Australian Rules will never be as boring as soccer.

Also - never understood the "world's game" argument. As though we should fall in line because that's what everyone else is doing. Last time I checked, I'm Australian.

Soccer is played in the summer in Australia isn't it? So it's really only competing with Cricket on a domestic level.

However, participation rates in soccer amongst kids is increasing faster than Auskick, I am hearing. I do think our game needs some changes to take it into the 21st Century, but the danger is not getting them right and further compounding the problems we see. Popularity of sports will always ebb and flow, so I don't see anything to worry about at the moment.

My suggestion to decrease congestion in AFL is simple:

Decrease the size of teams significantly, but have four/five man bench with unlimited interchanges, or,

Leave team size unchanged. Scrap the sub, have a three man interchange, and restrict interchanges significantly.
