AFL Looking At 3 Gather Rounds

I do find it interesting they are thinking of the Sydney one being held at Easter.

When the only other major ground beside the SCG will be, ummm, unavailable.

Have no issue with 3 gather rounds.
Can be alternated between WA & SA, QLD and NSW, Vic and Tassie? Or some such split.

Dunno why but I thought of the Big Bash and their season extensions in the past.

More of a good thing isn't always best. Will loose its shine pretty quick

Surprised they are not considering Queensland. Vics especially love to go up there for footy trips ( or to move permanently).

6-7 games per round in that proposal. The SCG would host most games (including GWS), but Showring Oval right next door is getting done up to hold ~10k so that could host one or two smaller drawing games.

The fact that the Giants have always been invisible in their home town during Easter, because of ground availability, is probably something being addressed with this idea. Just look at the 2024 fixture: 1 AFL game in NSW (Syd v GC) between March 23 and May 4.

Ahh so that will be their AFLW and VFL ground.
Giants doing the same with Tom Wills oval as it is also planned to be upgraded so it can hold our AFLW and VFL games.

That’s fair enough, and great the AFL are trying something to remedy this.

We also have Blacktown for low drawing games, but in saying that transport is woeful for the place.

Still would be good if Giants Stadium could be a part of it.

It’s 3 games spread out and each is in completely different states.
Hardly overdoing it.

I’m just waiting for the inevitable Vic clubs complaining about travel load after this and the AFL finally making changes to address it. So in short I’m all for it.

How can they justify putting a gather round in vic? Whats the logic there? Theres almost a gather round in Vic most weeks anyway, so theyll do 3-4 games in vic and 3-4 in tas?
Why bother making it a gather round? just schedule a few games in Tassy and carry on as usual.
Surely the logical idea if 3 gather rounds was locked in would be WA, SA and NSW. WA and SA need more attention than bloody Vic

So if they just scheduled 3-4 games in Tasmania they wouldnt need a "gather round". Hell, do 3-4 games there 2 weeks in a row so most teams get to play down there each year.
All the Vic/Tas gather round is a round where essentially all the Vic teams get to stay home and the normally non vic games move to Tassy. We should be increasing the travel loads of the vic teams if anything, not decreasing it

The proposal had the whole opening round in Tassie, except for the first game in Geelong. The Cats and Devils would get HGA against the Swans and Giants, and then have return fixtures in the Sydney round to balance it out.

Why dafuq would you have a gather round in Victoria? Every bloody weekend is gather round there.
