It’s hard to believe that there are only two games left in the 2020 home and away season. For many, it seemed unlikely that the season would get to this point, with the AFL having to make so many adjustments on the fly. Thankfully, it looks like we’ll get the desired 17 game season, and a Grand Final with a crowd. Both these teams have different aims for the remainder of the season. For Collingwood, they need to win this game to make sure they can make finals. For the Suns, they don’t want to undo any of their improvements made this season by getting blown out in these final games.
The last time these two sides met was in round 20 of the 2019 season. Collingwood were coming into the game with some poor form, which encouraged some to think that Gold Coast had a sniff. However, it wasn’t to be. It was complete and utter domination from the Magpies, who put forth a wire to wire performance. Grundy was the best for the Magpies, with Treloar and Crisp not too far behind.
Collingwood
This is it for Collingwood. Win this game, they will book their spot in the finals. Lose this match, and they will face a mammoth task of having to take down the highly rated Port Adelaide side in the final match of the home and away season.
Collingwood’s last match was truly frustrating for their fans. At times, they looked like they could play with the Lions, and at other times they looked so far off the pace it wasn’t funny. Despite some inconsistent play, they were able to go into the last quarter with a chance to win, and despite plenty of the ball in their forward half, the Magpies weren’t able to capitalize, once again exposing their forward line deficiencies. It’s frustrating for sure, but something that will give Magpie fans encouragement is the fact that they were able to hang in there, and with some polish on their forward entries, they can compete with the best in the competition.
The Magpies will also be injecting some much needed talent into the side, with De Goey and Treloar coming back into the side.
Where the Magpies can win
The Magpies need to tidy up those forward entries. Last week, they were pretty good in all areas, besides the forward line, who struggled to get clean entries that could be used. If they can produce more efficient forward plays, they can compete with the best, and be able to make a splash in the finals, should they make it.
Player to watch
De Goey is the man to watch for the Magpies this week. Entering the 2020 season, De Goey was wanting to make an impact, and establish himself as one of the best players in the competition. However, some off-field issues, combined with injuries have derailed his season. However, his last match against Geelong nearly two months ago showed what he could do. De Goey has the ability to turn games around, and he can possibly create that electricity in the Collingwood forward line that they so desperately need.
Gold Coast
After many years in the wilderness, the Suns look like they are finally building a team that can compete in future seasons. For far too long, the Suns were the easy beats of the competition, and besides a few encouraging early season performances each year, they would barely make a whimper. Thankfully, that has all turned around, and while they aren’t great, the Suns are finally on that positive trajectory. Stuart Dew is enforcing a positive culture, while they also have some a quality leadership group with players like Witts, Swallow, and Greenwood.
Despite some very strong form in the early parts of the season, the Suns have fallen away slightly, with injuries also mounting. The Suns are coming off a convincing loss to the Lions, losing by 45 points. Ellis and Greenwood were good for the Suns, but they had very little support, as they struggled to hold the Lions back on the attack.
Where the Suns can win
The Suns really struggled to get the ball out of the midfield and inside forward 50 last week against the Lions, and it hurt them badly. If the Suns are to win, they need to do better work around the stoppages. Taking risks to anticipate where Grundy will hit the ball has been quite effective against Collingwood, which is something the Suns can do to win.
Player to watch
Jarrod Witts is the man to watch for the Suns. The former Magpie has been a revelation for the Suns, winning the club best and fairest award last season. Witts is thriving in the number one ruck, and he is now one of the best ruckman in the competition. Many teams have shown that in order to beat Collingwood, you have to get on top of their midfield. If Witts is one his A-game, he should be able to beat a clearly out-of-form Grundy, and generate that midfield edge that could win the Suns the game.

Congratulations to Jack Crisp and Josh Thomas
Crisp and Thomas chalk up their 150th and 100th games, respectively. Crisp was traded to Collingwood in 2015 through the Beams trade, and has been a staple in Collingwood’s best 22. He has been a valuable asset off of the half back line, and has been a joy to watch for Collingwood fans.
Josh Thomas has had a very interesting career to say the least. He was slow to get into the Collingwood lineup when he first joined the club, but eventually established his spot in the side during the 2013-14 seasons. However, a drug related suspension forced his career into doubt. Thankfully, he has showed his resilience, and has managed to solidify his spot in the Collingwood team as a pressure forward.
Tip
Collingwood should have the drive to win this game. It might be a bit of a tussle, but they’ll get it done eventually.
