Aaarrrgh a very frustrating watch today.

Our issues are many and there are things that Webb needs to rectify on the training track and in terms of personnel for us to have positive drive forward.

From a coaching/method standpoint there are 3 things that really stand out:
  • Tackling - Our tackling is atrocious. Needs a tonne of work. Start practicing in the departure lounge at the airport, on the plane, then Monday morning. Balance and intent, but also the line they run, as some easy tackles don’t even get to the starting line.
  • Attack on the Ball – Following on, it can so often be the line they run, but there needs to be a willingness to attack in with extreme prejudice (as well as greater awareness of the ball over the opponent). Also one-touch pick-ups are a rarity. One-touch plays are such an advantage if you can maximise them.
  • Decision Making/Assertive Delivery – Too often there a sense that we’re just happy to be rid of the ball, instead of clear-headedly, purposively and aggressively getting it to advantage a teammate on the move and/or in the best position.
Possibly comes from having a coach who doesn’t have a long history in the game and certainly not in leagues where 90% of the players have had that long immersion in the game.

Improvement of some degree could be made to the above as soon as next week, but also needs repeated and continual reinforcement from a highly-specific basic level.

Personnel, may or may not be as directly fixable:

Antonio, O’Sullivan and even Miller are all living on past glories at this point. Don’t know how that decision to favour O’Sullivan over Tuks went down in the match committee, but that injury might save them from themselves. Antonio is a shadow at this point and hopefully her laurels are comfy. Likewise Miller could do worse than handover the captaincy…or maybe nail those fundamentals.

Tighe has her athleticism, but her positioning and proactiveness to positioning are two lengths behind.

In fact all the Irish contingent are near liabilities at this stage.

Runnalls brings a lot, but her decision-making lets her down.

A lot of the personnel stuff could be just a confidence thing and getting coherence and assertiveness in the way the team play goes.
