[Giant Strides]

As captainMyCaptain posted on the AFLW thread, we're headed into the AFLW trade and draft period. Even though it doesn't get as much attention as the men's, I thought I'd cut it across to its own thread for the period.

The 2023 AFLW Trade Period will run from Thursday, December 7 until Thursday, December 14. Off the back of a landmark CBA, players can sign 12-month minimum contracts without a cap on maximum terms.

The AFLW Draft will be held in the evening of Monday, December 18.

In line with the AFLW Season Eight Supplementary Draft, nominees will be permitted to nominate for a ‘national pool’ again, allowing draftees to be considered by all 18 clubs in the NAB AFLW Competition. A player can nominate for their home state’s draft pool or nominate to enter in a national draft pool. Each player who is required to relocate through the draft will be eligible for expanded relocation benefits as included in the recent CBA.

AFL.com.au reports that there may be up to 35 players potentially on the move throughout an AFLW Trade Period that begins on Thursday.

The Lions are set for a quieter Trade Period than in previous years, having suffered from recent expansion raids, but Mikayla Pauga could head to Greater Western Sydney after she played in last Sunday's Grand Final win.

The Giants, who signed superstar midfielder Alyce Parker to a fresh contract extension on Wednesday, are also hoping to improve and have targeted former first-round pick Alana Gee from Gold Coast and small forward Aliesha Newman from the Swans.

Richmond has won commitments from Giants pair Jodie Hicks and Ally Dallaway.

St Kilda is also hoping to improve its list as it aims for a maiden AFLW finals appearance, with the club targeting a move for Giants ruck Rene Caris over the next week.

One of the draft bolters this season, Buttifant looms as the pick of the tall defenders. Perhaps a couple of centimetres below genuine key position height, the Giants Academy member has opted to nominate nationally which is great news for clubs around the country. Given the lack of defenders who can play on genuine talls in this year’s draft, Buttifant offers that, and most importantly some crucial run. Still learning to curb that explosiveness at times, she backs herself to break down the opposition defensive zones.

Caris joining Giants seemed a bit of an oddity, but thanks for your efforts this season Rene. Back to her home state of Victoria. Celebrating pick #52 seems ... overly positive! And we're still short on rucks.

Great attitude from Kristie-Lee Weston-Turner and for mine the likely pick 1 but if she was somehow available at our pick 3 would be amazed if we didn't take her.

"I've had a really good connection with GWS, both them and Sydney flew me up, and they've been unreal. I've had a lot of interest from interstate clubs like West Coast, Freo and the majority of the Melbourne clubs. I've been pretty grateful and feel honoured I've had all these opportunities, it feels awesome, it's unreal, actually. "I personally think the whole draft should be national, but I take into consideration that some girls might not be in the same boat, they're finishing year 12 or want to stay with their families. I was more than happy to do that, I think my preference is to actually go interstate rather than stay in Melbourne."

So the last day of trading tomorrow and the following are a possibility

Richmond is also likely to part with pick No.30 to land Greater Western Sydney duo Jodie Hicks and Ally Dallaway, with the Tigers also set to secure pick No.42 as part of the transaction.

The Giants, who are set to grab pick No.30 from the Tigers, could then trade that to the Swans as part of a pick slide that could also see Cam Bernasconi's side secure small forward Aliesha Newman. They will also nab Courtney Murphy from the Lions.

Looking like we will be going hard with youth, but noticed that has us still with pick 24 but we actually traded that to the lions for Pauga.

Nomination: National

Srhoj is pure class, capable of playing on the wing or either flank. A nice user of the footy who appears to cruise around the field, such is the smoothness of her running. Has really strong hands overhead and reads the play well.

Where could she go?

Appears likely to land at GWS with pick No.3, but would fit in nicely within the top five.

GWS was not shy on making moves, with a lot of the depth players delisted, while Ally Dallaway was a surprise departure to Richmond alongside Jodie Hicks, while recent acquisition Rene Caris went to her third club after being picked up ahead of Season 8. The Giants managed to hold onto Pick 3, and grabbed some more X-Factor in the front half with Mikayla Pauga and Aliesha Newman, while adding rookie Courtney Murphy from the Lions.

FIRST PICK

GWS is well placed with its first selection in the AFL Women’s Draft, holding onto Pick 3 with an a certainty the Giants will look nationally for their draft pick. Given it is anticipated that Kristie-Lee Weston-Turner will be off the board either via the Bulldogs or Eagles, the Giants just have to predict the other player taken before making arrangements for Pick 3.

It has been rare in the past that the Giants can find childhood supporters just purely because the club has only been around over the past decade, but they have one in the top-end of the draft in Jessica Rentsch. The GWV Rebels skipper has nominated nationally and is a huge fan of the club, breaking away from her parents’ supporter bases of Carlton and Essendon.

Rentsch would provide explosive speed off half-back and incredible defensive pressure, replacing some key players from the Giants of past years. Given she is keen and willing to head there, GWS may opt for the talented runner who overcame a broken leg mid-year last year to get better and better as the season went on.

If Brooke Barwick is on the board, the Tasmanian seems a strong choice given she has to relocate regardless and has that brilliant midfield prowess. She has a lot of potential and despite standing at 157cm, packs a punch. Her offensive and defensive pressure really shines and would be a fantastic acquisition for the Giants.

The other player who is a good fit for the Giants is West Australian Kaitlyn Srhoj who is a marking winger with inside experience. She can also play off a flank and provides great run and carry similar to Rentsch in that regard.

REMAINING DRAFT CROP

After Pick 3, the Giants have to wait a while until their next selection coming in at 39. Trying to calculate who might be there then is difficult, though some extra firepower up forward or midfield support would seemingly be a potential option.

GWS has some tall options that should be still on the board, in Lions Academy forward Lilu Hung and Sturt speedster Zara Walsh. Both are very different players but can fill the void up forward, as good wing/forward Jacinta Baldwick – who can also play inside – given her strength.

Local talent Cleo Buttifant would be well and truly off the board by that stage, but Mel Staunton – who won the AFLW Academy MVP – could be matched with Pick 39 or potentially taken outright. Sophia de Castella is the daughter of marathon runner Robert and is the other Giants Academy member to earn an AFLW Draft Combine invite.

From a state level, Macquarie University forward Sophie Kavanagh and Murray Bushrangers tall Alice Voss are others who might come into the mix with some of the Giants’ later picks.

SUMMARY

GWS Giants are set to grab an elite young talent with Pick 3, having plenty of options to choose from this year. They will likely be able to scoop up some speed and hardness with their first choice, and then go best available and needs with the later selections.
