With eight fresh charges brought against him, bringing the total to thirty four, the floodgates are clearly opening.
Why now?
Although their molesting is done in private, these monsters hide in plain sight, protected by a community and system that enforces their their positions of trust and authority and the knowledge that their victims are unlikely to be believed if they ever come forward to tell their stories.
In the case of these allegations against Alan Jones, it was the outstanding bravery of only a handful of victims in coming forward to tell their story and the care, courage and utter professionalism of journalists from the Sydney Morning Herald (specifically Kate McClymont AM) that saw these stories come to light in front page articles in December 2023. And once those stories were analysed, corroborated and printed other victims had the faith to approach those journalists to tell their own stories. NSW Police, already investigation such claims now had enough evidence to ramp up Strike Force Bonnefin to escalate investigations leading to the multitude of charges tabled in court today.
There is no doubt in my mind that the declining power and/or institutional/political protections afforded to these monsters involved in systemic sexual abuse plays a big part in their crimes being made public.
And yes, a reminder that these are allegations only that have been levelled at Alan Jones at this stage.
