Alex Rance is the only backmen in the squad that does everything that he can to save the tigers arses.Last night against the Demon's He was doing 5 jobs at once and was working like a machine,While the others didn't do as Much.

What backmen will be able to do a job without Alex making a impact on it/being near it.He needs HELP especially next week if Rance is not going to be playing.

The backline was fine last year until Rance won best and fairest and now they think it's ok to sit back and let him do the work. They will stand up when his not there to carry them on his shoulders.
they will get a great chance to prove that in the next three weeks, we mostlikly will be facing Port, Hawthorn and Sydney with out Rance.

Nope I said it in the pre game thread that he was surrounded by tug boats and that He and Houli would be in strife. Houli of course turned to pooh being the only runner for the MFC defenders to hassle . Rance then was left with Jack to come down and do cameos and once Jack went off Rance was dusted. So the bloke lost his ship on Watts which was poor , but almost easy for a PC guy like me to accept it

A big chance to revamp our backline next season. To cater for the way the game is going.

I think we have 5 pieces in our list already that fit into this back 6 but only 1 in Rance that currently occupies the backline now.

I would sell the farm to have Michael Hurley join Rance in a league best key position defence. Long term deal at good money. That combo would be outstanding.

The other positions you look at sides like Sydney, Bulldogs and Adelaide and realise you need very good ball users with pace and class in there. I reckon we have these guys on our list.

Jason Castagna - small defender with rebound.

Nathan Broad - third tall medium back with great pace and rebound.

Chris Yarran - elusive half back flanker who can set up play with great skills.

Ben Lennon - Medium defender with great reading of play and skills to rebound out of defence.

All defences are going to be scored against in today's game. It's about setting your offensive game up here and having defenders who are quick, classy with good skills and make minimal mistakes in key areas. Having a combo of Rance and Hurley pivot this lot could be the making of us.

Time to get with the times.

Need to save a spot for the weekly rotation of hunt/morris

Shows how far behind the game Hardwick and his crew are.

Shocking skilled, dumb, can't keep feet players occupying the positions. No wonder Rance was frustrated.

My back 6 would look like this next season:

Castagna Rance Broad
Yarran Hurley Lennon

I think there will be sharp improvement in this department when Grimes returns. He adds a surprising amount of pace.

I would trade Grimes. Sick note. Not dependable because he is frequently injured and a guy we can obtain something for.

Also he's a very negative player. Not where the game is going in defenders. He lacks ability to rebound and add to the offence.

Broad and Castagna have shown nothing. And the little they did play in the pre season, showed their skills were average at best and no better than what we have.

Strange comment considering how prolific qty small forwards there are , much prefer grimes locking down on fasalo or Garlett than Morris , he can play tight and is also reliable overhead , he stays

Where have I listed Morris?

The game has changed. The need for a Grimes type is small. Especcially one that hardly gets on the park.

This season's a write off lets be honest, why don't we trial our players down back and see who makes a fist of it.

We know Rance is a cornerstone of the team, as tigerbob said the addition of Michael Hurley would be a great get for the tigers, and an opportunity to finally lure someone ready made for AFL with some serious skill.
With those 2 taking a tall each, our back line would be seriously formidable, the only problem is filling the other 4 spots. If we rotate every potential player through there for the rest of 2017, picking the backline based on form and cohesion and by the end of the year know exactly who can fill the spots and allow them to gel, next season might be better planned and we may get a better start.

Players who could be rotated through down back; Grimes, C.Ellis, Lennon, Griffiths, Castagna, Butler, Drummond, Elton

Vlastuin needs to be put in the guts, he isn't a defender and our midfield could really benefit from him. KMacca is best on the wing.

Players who we know are not good enough and don't deserve another game; Astbury, Hunt, Morris, Chaplin, Batchelor,

This may be an unpopular decision, but I think Houli and Yarran are our best options still for run off the half back, both are great rebounding players, their actual defensive effort could be improved but for now they are the best players to own that position.

If we get some games into these guys, focus on getting it right next season with structure and communication, a backline of

Grimes Hurley Lennon(Grif)(IDK, up in the air)
Houli Rance Yarran

with the ability to replace like for like players is the best possible scenario.

Broad is a million miles off it!

Surprised at the good show Astbury put in against the Dees..
Takes a good mark...has composure...ordinary kick...slow...but hey that's already an improvement over Chaplin...
Chaplin...Morris...Hunt...have to go...just ****ing ordinary when the pressure is on...

Lol, everybody on this board was losing their shit when it was rumoured we were going to pick Lever. Now they wish we picked him. :D

I don't recall that ever being a rumour. We were always into Duggan and Ellis, everyone knew it would be out of them.

Broad and Castagna have shown nothing. And the little they did play in the pre season, showed their skills were average at best and no better than what we have.

So you're judging them on a couple of games?

Castagna's year last year was superb and showed he had talent. Yep he needs to be developed and refined but he has the qualities I identified as being important for a small defender. He loves to take them on and turn defence into attack. His kicking can be hit and miss but it's not a technical issue its an experience issue. With the right development can be anything.

Broad is a prototype medium defender I believe. He's 192cm but has electric pace and good skills. His height allows him to play on a tallish player but he's agile enough to match up on a Fasolo type too. Again, can take it on and turn defence into attack which is the modern game. Hasn't people been watching?

I think Lennon adds the class and poise and can be a quarter back type to gets the 6th forward or the loose man role and can set up. He sees the game so well and reads it well. His kicking is elite. He's 188cm so his height can be useful.

We all know what Yarran can do. His pace and kicking skills can be lethal in today's free flowing game. With a games style that encourages free flowing attacking play, he'd be an asset.

As stated I believe this is the type of defence needed for the modern game. Two absolute key defenders and then attacking defenders.
