Pretty easy for any talented forward to lead into open space and receive pinpoint passes from some of the best skilled onballers in the land streaming downfield under no pressure! Micky circa '96 would have looked ordinary under last nights circumstances. Watt is in his first year as a full back, and is still probably a couple of pre-seasons away from having the strength and confidence to counter the best forwards ,but no full back will look any good unless pressure is applied to the oppositions ball carriers.

A response that the Commentary team noted when they said that not even Silvagni would have stopped the leads.

The first goal was amazingly pinpoint, the second, he outmarked Makepeace while Watt manned up on Brown (where was Baird?) and the 3rd again was a a great pass, to the correct side in order to wrong foot Watt.

The forward has all the cards if the midfield can deliver, as they are always 1 step in front. Watt has improved his strength by 17% in the pre-season and a further 11% during the season according to the trainers. It is believed that he will be pushed to improve his strength by almost 20% during the next pre-season which would see his bench press be around 140 - 145kg, only about 10kg below Mick.

This is the last tool he needs, if he accomplishes the strength improvments and doesn't take a step forward, then you can start questioning him, but at the moment, he is learning how to play the possie, and is still a year away from having the tools.

Excuses, excuses, excuses.........

Who gives a rats tossbag "How many percent" in strength someone has gained? If you are going to constantly wait until the forward makes his lead and be reactive, no manner of "tools" is going to stop them. If he is not going to be pre-emptive, or outmanouver his opponent then he should not play full back.

The only "tool" is MOTI.

This is the last tool he needs, .

It is one of a few he needs to get right.

I would love to see him farkin lose it and punch someone. Seriously. The best FB's are in physical pain when they get goals kicked on them. I am not saying he doesn't care, but christ, get angry!!!!

I am actually confident with Watt on forwards who base their game around running strength. He has the ability to curb their strength. The stand and shove forwards bend him over, and pure strength is only a factor in this weakness. He needs to learn how to stay in a contest, how to stay strong on his feet or stand off them and get a run at it like Fletcher.

It is a technique thing.

And Rewboy, you are one sad MF.

Watt gets a hard time on here which is a bit harsh in my opinion. He is still very young and will be one of the players who benefits greatly from plenty of match time this year. He has a lot of parts to his game that need improving, but that is the case for all of our youngsters.

Last night he got little support from a midfield that fell asleep at crucial times. Lynch got the better of him in the 1st qtr but after that he held him well and I think his only other goal(plenty of rum and cokes last night) came when he left his man to close down Caracella.

I agree he needs to add a bit(lot) of mongrel to his game, but that is also the case with just about all of our younger players. He will be a good player for us IMO, Shane Clayton on the other hand:D :D ;)

The tools as I put it are physical attributes needed to be an effective defender. Strength is all he lacks.

The other side though, and pretty darn important, is his ability to play the possie. He has a lot to learn, but it is still his first season at full back, and I don't care what anyone else says, the VFL / Reserves can only do so much, and for that fact, Watt has wasted 3 years under Pagan.

Couldn't agree more Moti and Groucho, Shannon Watt needs time, he doesn't have 200 or 100 games experience as a fullback.
Would love to see the stats on how many goals Mick Martyn had kicked on him in his first year. I agree he does need to get a bit of mongrel in him though, but then he is not alone there.
Inject a bit of Glenn Archer blood into him I say.

Well, as much as everyone keeps harping the idea that Watt plays too far off his opponent, even one step behind is too much these days but when you get lazy players upfield refusing to put pressure on oncoming ballcarriers who can use the ball with dead set accuracy then you have little or no chance...just like Moti pointed out with the above quote by the 'simple minded' commentators.

Overall I'd say that Watt has developed considerately this season and although I tend to question his 'ANIMAL' and technique, I think the next few years he'll get every chance to SILENCE the critics like some of us. (me included)

The whole game structure needs a turn around....too much p*** farting around with the ball that leads to a turn over is the issue.
I like Watt doing a Dench...run straight a head and keep running...make sure you have the ball in the hand :)

Watt gets no help from our gameplan.
Why don't our onballers man up? Because Dean laidley doesn't want them to. Dean wants our onballers to run out wide to the boundary line and chip the ball around until we can set up a decent forward set up. The theory is ok but what happens when we turn it over? Well it means that Brisbane players are loose all over the ground and have no pressure on them when they deliver a perfect pass to their forwards.
I get sick of hearing people bagging the onbballers for not manning up. Why do you think they are not manning up? Do you think they are saying well I couldn't be stuffed?? Or do you think that perhaps Dean Laidley wants them to get free on their own so they can be attacking and cause some damage with the ball themselves???? That is the Dean Laidley midfield plan.
Dean doesn't want to be reactive but instead pro active. He likes offensive play. He doesn't care if they kick a goal as long as we kick 2.
All i say is that Deans plan will never work with players like ours who have no idea how to kick the ball properly. In 3 years time then yes, it just might work but at the moment the skills aren't good enough.
As for Watt well he is our only player who can play fullback and he was on Lynch. I'm glad Lynch only kicked 5. I thought he might have kicked 10. Our fullback plays for Carlton now. Watt is just a kid. He doesn't need to get stronger he just needs to learn how to play football at fullback.
Really Watt wasn't a big factor in the game. We only kicked 11 goals for the whole match. 11 goals wont beat anyone.
Laidley needs a re-think and now he has the chance to try a few things.

That's because woosha, Watt tells dean how he is going to play full back with his years of experience....
"Yes Wattie, you do that I know nothing about defending" says Dean.

Don't you think he playing the way the coach is telling him to play.
Watch him he runs off his players to help create in the midfield one poor kick or handball and he can't get back in time.
Every week you have to tell some one to watch the game
