Amazing coincidences in football

The two clubs that have won one VFL/AFL premiership are Port Adelaide and St.Kilda and both those clubs had amazing world events happen when they won their only flag. The Reagan thing is seriously freaky.

1966 (St.Kilda)
1. The "Batman" television series starring Adam West debuts.

2. Ronald Reagan enters politics and becomes governor of California.

3. NASA launches Lunar Orbiter 1, the first U.S. spacecraft to orbit the Moon.

2004 (Port)
1. Facebook invented

2. Ronald Reagan dies

3. The EU undergoes it's largest expansion so far by accepting 10 new countries

If GWS win the flag and are also on one premiership, the freakiness will continue because in 2023 three other events happen:

1. Reagan film starring Dennis Quaid released in 2023

2. Covid pandemic officially over

3. Webb telescope upending existing theories of how early galaxies formed changing the way we look at the Universe.

Collingwood has kicked exactly 18.12 120 three times this season.

Not sure how amazing that is, but it seems more unlikely that a team kicking such a high score/scoring shots would be repeated in the same season.

1990:
Tony Liberatore wins the Brownlow after injuring his knee in the fourth last round of the season. He fails to play the final three matches of the season. His team played Brisbane and Essendon in the final two rounds, with his team losing by 24 points in the penultimate round.

2023:
Nick Daicos (favourite for the Brownlow) injures his knee in the fourth last round of the season. He fails to play the final three matches of the season. His team played Brisbane and Essendon in the final two rounds, with his team losing by 24 points in the penultimate round.

From the Bulldogs board:

E.J. Whitten was 21 when he won his best and fairest in the 1954 premiership year.

As above, Bulldogs first flag was 21 years (and 60 days) after Whittens birth (1933 - 1954).

Bulldogs second flag was 21 years (and 45 days) after Whittens passing (1995 - 2016).

Pretty neat coincidence but would have been a real whopper if he were born fifteen days later.

An omen for Collingwood for seven days from now -

In the AFL era Collingwood has contested 6 GFs (not including the now outlawed 2010 replay situation - we could modify it to “won 6 PFs prior to this season”) for a record of 2 wins and 4 losses.

Collingwood in GFs after the Cats were in the GF the previous season - 100% 2-0*.

Collingwood in GFs after the Cats were NOT in the GF the the previous season - 0% 0-4.

With Geelong having contested the 2022 GF then Collingwood can’t lose the 2023 GF? 😎

*technically 2-0-1 W-L-D if you count the 2010 goofiness. They are still undefeated in the GFs in the seasons following a Geelong GF appearance.

Every team Port Adelaide played in the finals during Ken Hinkley's tenure (11 seasons) starting from 2013 qualified for a Grand Final appearance except Port.

With the Brisbane Lions making the Grand Final yesterday, the amazing run of century before coincidences has come up again for the 14th year in a row, with Fitzroy playing in the 1923 Grand Final. To recap:

1910/2010 - Collingwood Premiers both seasons
1911/2011 - Collingwood Runner Up both seasons
1912/2012 - Swans Runner Up 1912, Premiers 2012
1913/2013 - St Kilda make first GF in 1913 but lose to Fitzroy. Fremantle make first GF in 2013, but Hawthorn proves too strong.
1914/2014 - Swans Runner up both seasons, to Carlton & Hawthorn respectively
1915/2015 - Carlton and Hawthorn take successive premierships in 1915 and 2015 respectively. Carlton 1915 premier, last 2015.
1916/2016 - Fitzroy finish last in 4 team VFL 1916 GF but win all their finals and the GF over minor premier Carlton. The Bulldogs finish 7th in 2016 but win all their finals including the GF over minor premier Sydney Swans.
1917/2017 - Richmond win the 1917 wooden spoon, and the 2017 premiership.
1918/2018 - Collingwood lose the 1918 GF to the Swans by 5 points, and the 2018 GF to the WC Eagles by 5 points.
1919/2019 - Richmond make their first GF in 1919 but lose to Collingwood. GWS make first GF in 2019 and are thrashed by Richmond.
1920/2020 - Richmond premiers both seasons.
1921/2021 - Bulldogs are VFA runner up in 1921, and AFL runner up in 2021 to Melbourne.
1922/2022 - Geelong and the Swans are second last and last in 1922 and Cats and Swans play the 2022 Grand Final.

So next week, either it will be 1923/2023 Fitzroy runner up, Brisbane Lions runner up or 1923 Fitzroy runner up, Brisbane Lions 2023 premiers.
