Favourite Hawk may leave nest

Essendon's uncontracted midfielder/forward, Andrew Lovett, flew to Brisbane yesterday to meet with Lions' officials, including coach Michael Voss.

The Lions are interested in Lovett, who wants out of Essendon, but it is unclear what they are willing to part with to obtain him. The Lions are unlikely to offer up their first draft pick, No. 12.

Is not just pace we are looking for but the ability to slip out of a tackle, fend or sidestep an opponent and then burn them off with pace followed up by a low flat pass under full pelt....couple of those please.

Agree with this Nuggo. We had a lot of young guys playing, and sometimes its the simple things. The smaller bodies against a pretty well matured team like the dogs, its harder for us to tackle them, and easy for them to tackle us. 2 seasons will have this fixed and we wont look as bad. Bigger bodies also effects the clearances and contested possessions as well. However, we still need another player like Ash or Sherman, who has some decent pace to help in the midfield and run forward to kick a goal or two. We are one genuine quick short in the midfield i think. Ash in the back, with Sherman and (Lovett it seems) playing off HF pushing up into the midfield. With that i think we can play a smart small forward, a Rockcliff as a bit of a leading forward and thats a pretty good setup going forward.

Good debate on the pace theory BF, I mentioned the 'live' aspect as I watch the majority of our games on TV & you don't see everything unfold unfortunately. Perhaps per Chopper we do need at least 1 more ball carrier, I would like to see a couple.
The other side to Lovett is that you would think someone will need to go to accomodate him, I think most would agree with this theory. Obviously Tim has retired but we have signed a few of the younger guys up towards the end of the season & they would have had increases. Evens out?
I really think Rhan may be on shaky ground. He would have received a reasonable contract last time after the Tigers were sniffing around. I guess the concern is that this is an area we have a deficiency in, & a greater hole maybe created. Looms as a real interesting trade week.

That about sums it up Bobby. I think the lions will persist with Hooper, but he would be on his last legs. Im sure the club would have told him they expect big things from him next year, lets hope he responds by coming back very fit and committed.

I think Monday will be the most interesting day of trade week. With so many trades already done, you would think they will be first cab of the rank on monday, if there is any delay in trades, it will get people talking. How quickly a deal is done with Lovett will show how willing all sides are, or if someone is playing hard ball.

We could definitely use some of Lovett's attributes, particularly his run, carry and his attack. We could do without some of the negatives though, the pre-madonna attitude and the apparent lack of commitment on a consistent basis. We already have an aging ring-in who has delivered plenty of that in Trapper.

What grinds on me though, is that we are going after a 27 year old, gee I'd be much more comfortable going for 23 year olds. A 23 year old recruit may at least survive through two premiership windows, if they were to eventuate.

What was exciting about this year was that our youngsters made some progress. Now all of a sudden, we are speculating about going for the prize as if the likes of Lovett is going to make a great deal of difference. I hope we are entering the premiership window, but to be honest, I feel we are at least three years away. Personally I'm more comfortable going for 23 year old Raines rather than 27 year olds Lovett and Hadley.

Lovett will be good if he comes cheap, I have a feeling he won't. As for Hadley, I wouldn't want to get shafted by him again.

Ok so where do people on here think he will go? Do you think he will go to Brisbane and if so what would we needto give up? Second round pick and a player? Lovett looks like he could head north up to Brisbane but than Raines is apparently already a Lion for our 3rd round pick and Brisbane still talking to Brent Staker. Very wierd trade week for Brisbane and for everyone!

it would be ideal to swap hooper for lovett but essendon would want riska and a late round pick. staker for dalziell and raines can go **** himself.

I wouldn't bet on that one. It may turn out to be true but I think some bigger fish have come to the surface which we will go after. If no result than Raines is in.

Brisbane will be pushing for a third rounder for Lovett while the Bombers will want an early second rounder. We may have to do a deal elsewhere to get a late second rounder......who the hell knows.

Gee I hope the Raines deal does not happen.

Lovett - not too sure - he certainly had a good year this year.

Luke Ball would be handy.

Lovett & Pick 42
for
Pick 12

If Brisbane want Lovett, I've got a feeling your mob will have to part with your first rounder.

Lovett had an outstanding season and around half a dozen clubs are chasing his signature.

If Essendon want pick 12 then those other clubs can have him.

I wonder if Brisbane officials have the same mindset though.

They must pretty keen on gaining his services if they asked him to fly up to Bris and have a chat, surely.

We flew Staker over as well. Doesn't mean we're going to use our first pick on him.

You won't be getting pick 12 for Lovett dude. Best that you start accepting that now.

Pick 28 will be part of the deal, and if you are lucky, a fringe player.

This is what Essendon will miss most of all with Lovett leaving. He's a very good kick on the run & not just around goals. Can spot up a target & deliver by foot very well (not many others in our side come close). Many quicker players have slow down before they kick but Lovett usually maintains his pace which makes him extremely difficult to catch. I for one am very dissapointed he is leaving & doubt if we will get a comparable return. If he ends up at Brissy & plays anythything like he has this year you guys will love the excitement he brings.

You keep telling yourself that champ.

Out of contract.

Refusing to stay at Essendon.

Willing to play anywhere as long as he gets paid, including Fremantle.

Has had a falling out with the club and is probably not feeling like he owes them anything.

Doesn't sound like Essendon have much leverage here.... champ.

You'll take what we offer or he goes to Freo in the PSD...no skin off our nose.

All these bombers fans seem to think they hold the cards and have a player we are dying to get our hands on. We are only looking at him because he wants to get out. Pretty sure the bombers are going to have to settle on a trade, or they WILL lose him for nothing. A player of his ability wont go begging in the PSD.
