Any of you guys compete in MMA?

Never fought personally and wont (to old, have a job, can't train ll the time etc) but have and am currently training with a number of MMA cats. train with Magnum, we primarally do BJJ. Born about 10 years too early :p

Nope. Wanted to take up training as part of a fitness kick about 18 months back and of course tore up my knee pretty good. Having left my 20's behind I'd say competing is highly unlikely, but am wanting to start some sort of training in the next year or so.

Regardless, would be keen to hear about your experiences (if any) Big Daddy.

Not me.

My brother wants too, but is currently focused on Judo in London 2012 for now. He trains BJJ, Judo when ins Australia & has wrestled at an international level before (World champs). He wants to consider this post 2012.

Hes only 21 so time is on his side.

From what he has said Magnum has trained BJJ & rolled with a number of MMA practitioners throughout his time, so I guess he's the closest of us.

I want to train but Uni is pretty intense right now (but I have time for this forum?). Me and a friend have memberships at the Melbourne Martial Arts Academy and plan on doing a combo of Kick-Boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ and Boxing. I am really interested in Judo as well. Previously have done Taekwondo.

I have had 2 matches now. 1 win and 1 draw.

Without wanting to sound up myself I think I am a reasonable striker and reasonable grappler but I am still having some problems integrating the whole thing. Most dissapointingly I have given up some good positions on the ground by getting the red mist and get carried away trying to throw bombs or force a sub that isn't really on.

I guess experience is the best teacher here, there are definitely some mistakes I won't repeat.

I have fights no's 3 in 4 booked in as well.

I'm old as well - 35. Strangely my body hurts less from MMA training than footy.

I copped a bunch of concussions when I was younger and playing football, so I have no intentions to ever compete in MMA.

That said I love BJJ.

What weight are you fighting at Big Daddy M? Where do you train? (Most specifically where do you do your BJJ)

First was in Canberra on Brace for War and second in Wollongong for the Proving Ground promotion.

I was interested to know if any had tips/drills about blending the phases of MMA together.

Sparring at full tilt can be difficult in terms of people getting injured etc but it is hard to replicate the pressure of a fight when doing drills.

Yeah live drills can be difficult to truly replicate, especially for any striking.
As far as blending phases, I would make sure you start with simple things like always training in your mouthguard and gloves.

I would also focus your grappling on a no-gi game, I know a lot of people will say you need to learn both, but personally I think no-gi is fantastic for MMA.

Hi man

I am in Canberra and train at EPIC BJJ which is part of the Machado organisation. I do no gi grappling 2-3 times a week and gi stuff twice a week.

I also do as many boxing and MMA sessions as I can each week.

Whole heartedly agree agree about grappling in gloves, it makes a big difference.

I am a heavywieght, I am way chubby and in all seriousness if I was in tip top shape should probably be be a LHW.

Find a good wrestling coach. We're also a Machado school in Richmond (Melbourne) We've got a dude called Talgat Ilyasov who has been ranked as high as 7th at world titles for his weight. We also have Dan Kelly, an olympic level judo guy, and all the guys he trains with such as the Iverson brothers etc, I'm pretty sure someone here is a brother to one of the guys that train at Richmond, though I've never rolled with him he is a beast on the mat. I can't stress how much this cross training has helped not only my game, but the dudes that are serious from our club at BJJ. We've got 3 people flying over to compete as the oceana qualifiers for ADCC.

If you had to chose a style for takedowns I'd take frestyle wrestling. While the Judo is not useless it seems from my experience that unless you are elite then (from a BJJ/ground fighting perspective) you don't bring much to the table on the ground. I'm a purple belt of 2 years and I school every black belt judo player that comes on our matt bar the 4 or 5 best guys. Even then I hang with all of them except Dan who hands me my ass on a very consistent basis.

On the flip side we have dudes that have done limited wrestling (like 2 years) who are smaller than me who are absolute pricks to roll with, imposible to sweep and pass guard like a jugernaught and are strong as bulls. Talgat absolutely destroys me and he's only been shown 20 minutes of submissions the prick. A true freak of nature.

Of course, if you can, do both :D

Trained with Talgat on Monday and had Brian Ebersole on the mat. He was amazed at how good Talgat was and really liked his instruction. Didn't get to wrestle with Brian but looks like he'll be on the mat more as he warms up for his fight for Dennis Hallman. And I can say that he's huge. Easily over 90kg, probably 95 at the moment, amazing that he cuts to 170!

As for MMA, as drew said probably if I was younger, but I'm not the type that likes to fight unless I HAVE to, I'm happy with BJJ and Wrestling :)

1. There is a good coach based out of Altona north in Melbourne, my bro used to train with when he took his wrestling seriously but he is hard to deal with. Knows his stuff (been in the sport for 40-50 years) but is a hater so I wouldn't bother unless you want to be a wrestler, an MMA gym with a world class or at least an active/former international wrestler to train you is the way to go. From memory Dominance has one.

2. My bro used to train a lot with Dan but the IJF keeps funding him to train at an international training camp in France so has spent the last 8/12 months there which allows him to compete in the world cup comps held throughout Europe to get the Olympic qualifying points he requires.
