You would think that she was gassed for that last race, because I doubt her tactic was to do nothing but ride around at a leisurely pace.

53 medals is huge though yes a few missed golds (obvious two being the Sevens and Mollie in the 100), but what a Games for Australia after being utterly terrible across all sports the games prior.

Everything is building well for LA and obviously the home Games in 2032. Let’s just be thankful LA isn’t as brutal in terms of the Timezone!

Para Games should be good though

Disappinting end to australias best ever olympics campaign. A few missed opportunities. None were taken in the last couple of days.
Kieren 2nd and 3rd was a great result, better than expected. Jess Hull was fantastic. To be fair in the last few days we only really missed gold in the K2, maybe Little in the Javelin was a 30% chance. All the other silvers and bronze were mostly as expected.

Baker maybe would have been better off getting knocked out earlier in the eliminator. Take say 25 points instead of 38 and have more left in the tank.

Baker won silvers at world champs in the madison and points race, so you would think she knows what she's doing in these races even if it didn't look that way at this Olympics.

Disappointing to end on a 4-day Silver run (Although to be honest most of them got beaten by freakishly good athletes) but that's it for an all-time great Australian Olympics

18 Gold Medals for the first time in history :thumbsu:

53 medals, best haul for a Games outside of Australia :thumbsu:

First Track Cycling Gold in 12 years :thumbsu:

First Athletics Gold in 12 years (And the first Australian woman to win a Field event) :thumbsu:

First Tennis Gold in 28 years (And on clay of all surfaces) :thumbsu:

Best Athletics medal haul in 68 years :thumbsu:

Defied all logic and finished ahead of the French on Gold Medals in their own Olympics :thumbsu:

And finished ahead of those ****ing Poms for the first time in 20 years :thumbsu:

Summing up pennies v podiums:

Many of us (myself included) had a bit of fun at the expense of Breaking (and then some people took it too far). But in terms of deserving serious criticism, we should only be looking at the prioritised programs which bombed out, and not making excuses for them.

Our hockey teams were about as productive and respectable as a pack of schoolies. At least we have a history of success there, justifying the investment in a way. Rowing hopeless this year, though the results will probably turn around a la the cycling.

But it's definitely time to cut soccer loose. Let the overexposed national teams sink or swim on their own! Same goes for rugby and basketball.

Must admit that makes me feel some sports are way overfunded based on the potential for return.

Hockey and Basketball really stand out. Both can only provide what 2 medals each.

Rowing is high but there are 14 gold medals up for grabs even if we didn’t grab one.

Soccer doesn't provide enough medal opportunities to be a sport lots of money goes into.

Basketball too when let’s be real here we aren’t ever beating the US regardless. All that money for what a bronze or something? Pump the money into cycling, rowing, shooting, etc where multiple medals are in play. You get lucky in a team event great.

It's a pretty simplistic comparison given that's money given to national bodies which have other responsibilities besides the Olympics.
I do think actual professional sports should get funding for grassroots stuff like repairing rundown clubrooms.
A lot of those figures pale in comparison to what the AFL, an actual professional league with 30,000+ paying supporters per game, gets from the taxpayers just to host Gather Round.

Making World Cups is what Soccer is all about not Olympic medals. The returns in just qualifying for a World Cup is enormous for both Men and Women.
If the returns for making WCs are enormous, the FFA should have profited nicely by now and therefore don't need any special help from the government.

80% of funding goes to high performance, it's right there underneath the heading.

And no, those figures don't pale in comparison to the AFL, which gets less ASC money than squash. The SA government made a commercial deal for Gather Round which greatly benefits the SA economy--in other words, the AFL are providing bang for the taxpayer buck (unlike some other sports).

Hockey dissapointed aren't we good?

Never expected to medal in the men’s. Women’s was a who knows such a young side be better in LA and beyond hopefully the group stays around, despite the end at least we can say China won silver so it’s not as if we lost to a terrible side.

That's it for me. Thanks for the banter.

Make sure you all do the "memorable moments" thread.
Its been a great few weeks. Some real highs along the way with the Aussies.

After the last 6 weeks with the Tour De France, Wimbledon and Olympic Games l can finally get some serious sleep at night without feeling like a zombie the next day.
