Toast Ben Johnson

After watching the replay of the Geelong game, something struck me as I saw Ben Johnson kick the goal that ignited us in the third quarter.

Is it just me or does Johnno always seem to step up on the big occasions when we need a goal? We saw it against Geelong, he kicked two great goals against the Crows in the Semi Final last year and let's not forget his game saving tackle against Port in '02. However, I digress...

For someone who is always said to be an ordinary kick, god damn he always seems to slot the vital ones when we need them.

No wonder Malthouse has stuck with him for all these years.

Nice 2am toast! Couldn't agree more, one of the highlights for me of the entire night was seeing Steve Johnson get knocked right on his soft arse by BJ after dogging Heater over the boundary line. He's having a cracker of a season :thumbsu:

Love BJ.
Honest, hard working, humble and always seems to pop up when the going gets tough. His 6 week holiday set him back in the pecking order for a while but he has not put a foot wrong since. I even loved how he gave Stevie Johnson something to think about.

There is never a time when a BJ is not good for the whole side.

Roids is having a very very good season, as soon as he got the ball and started his arc I said it was a goal

This

I just knew he was gonna kick it, the second the ball left his boot i got out of my seat knowing it would deffs be a goal.

I have been a knocker of his at times but I have to agree with this thread he is in top form this year and his best is very damaging.
I think with his kicking generally when he kicks long on the run (eg. running goals) his accuracy is good. Its around the field when he has to measure kicks or tries to steer the ball that he has his blunders, which can be horrendous when he gets it wrong.

There is no doubting that his work ethic dropped off and he has hard to really work hard to get back the trust and faith and he has done so. He is having a pretty good year and has applied himself better then I have ever seen him defensively. I think in a way his success is reflective of where the club is at, we got stronger as a club and he has had to play a more marginal role and work harder to make sure he has a spot, he has done so well and as a result he as a player and the team as a whole is better for it. His kicking and fitness are back to where they where pre 2007 and he is playing further back in the ground so he isn't really having to deliver the ball I50 as often which is a plus.

I knew it was a goal before he even kicked it, Stokes tried to cover Johnson's right side (LOL) and Benny just faked that way, and went left (where he was always going) and from there you knew he would kick it.:thumbsu:

BJ got beat early by Stokes, but like the trooper he is, he fought hard all night, and eventually got on top of Stokes.

Johnson is so important to our structure, especially against a side like Geelong, StKilda or the Dogs who rely on small forwards to kick so many of their goals.

I'd just love to see Benny get a premiership medallion, he is Collingwood through and through.:thumbsu:

Yes, it was a good goal and it did spark us.

However, he is in the team because he is our designated decoy.

Not one opposition player mans him up...ever. His kicking skills have historically let the team down and that's why opposition teams leave him free to take possession.

His disposal has improved, but thats what happens when you play in a good team.

LOL. Ross Lyon made Milne tag BJ on our backline he's so good....:eek:

Try again.
Who in their right mind is anti BJ. A eunuch perhaps?

Since he got the 'bake' from Eddie he has given it his all.
Been playing good footy for 2 years now, some guys mature (grow up) later than others.

Ben has grown up

Not sure why BJ gets a toast for kicking 1 goal. He was done over by Stokes in the first half of the game. I actually thought that it was one of his poorer performances.

I think you are slightly missing the point. We needed for someone to stand up and inspire us at that stage it looked like Cats by plenty. BJ kicks a team lifting goal and we didn't look back.

I actually think the praise he is getting on that side of things is a bit rich, it was the right guy in the right place at the right time but I don't think he is the sort of person who routinely lifts at big moments or on big occasions. In fact I'd say more often then not it is the opposite, in that I'd say he is one of a few players who has a history of either going missing or being counter productive when we struggle.
