I've already gone with Fox, Robinson, Edwards and Florent. Think McVeigh is needed experience.
As an interchange player? He is too soft to interchange with the inside mids and too slow to interchange with the outsides. It seems a waste to play a half back interchange. We have Jack to come into the middle from the forward line as an on field interchange to add experience in there when needed. It just seems that McVeigh is unsuitable to be a mid field interchange (which is what you want the interchange bench for these days ) because he is really incapable of playing in the middle and to slow for the wing. Just asking where he would interchange and with who?

Its possible Florent starts the season in place of Papley, otherwise I don't think any of the debutants are ready just yet. It's really between Foote and Robinson for that spot that Mitchell opened up, but even then, Jones should be moving into the midfield.
Do you consider Shaun Edwards a debutant? At about the 7th minute of the second quarter Edwards ran through the middle, outpaced his opponent and hit Cameron on the chest from forty metres. Something we have lacked with pace in the middle and accurate passing on the run under pressure to a forward. If he replicates that in the pre-season games he has to be picked.

For the Swans at least, but he's not really experienced, no more than Mills or Heeney, even though he's been in the system a lot longer.

It's possible that he starts and I think he has a role to play. He reminds me of a more skilful Paul Bevan - attacks the ball with reckless abandon, but at least has the ability to hit a target, and did it repeatedly.

Yeah, you can see why they picked him up. We could do with another run and carry especially as Rohan is going through another of his injury phases. I know he's more a forward but could could work well at half back or wing.
Zak Jones and Mills were easily the most impressive today. You'd think Cameron is a good chance to pinch-hit until Naismith gets back. Dan Robbo wasn't bad, Foote and Fox got into it a bit. WOUld have liked to seen a bit more from Talia. Didn't really see much of Marsh, Melican, Newman, O'Riordan but not sure how many minutes they got. Ditto for Florent - didn't see him after the first q.

I liked Fox...

Ive had a read through the posts and most agree with you, he just looked fumbly and pressured to me. Newman apparently had a 91% de in back 50m and looked terrible to me, but swans media lauding him and Maiburn who i also thought was off the pace. Marsh anoher.

Either im way off with my judgement which is possible or what I base my judgement on was they just looked like the speed of afl was too much for them to deal with. I thought cunningham looked far better than them and hes as hit and miss as they come.

I didn't see a heap of O'Riordan, but he did really well when a handball from Florent went at ankle height for the transition into Edwards kick and Camerons mark, and the kick he appeared that hanners sadly dropped to give up a goal showed me that his skills are pretty decent.

We cannot take Jones off the half-back IMO or we will be stale as. Like 2015 stale. His performance off the half-back was probably most crucial to us reaching the GF in the prelim last year

From what 'they' have said you would expect players like Cunningham/Edwards and others to play that half back flanker role to give run and carry.
I wouldn't mind them giving a role like that to O'Riordan like our Irish premiership player.

Apparently Newman is pretty good out of the pocket anyway. I agree that moving Jones into the midfield deprives us of an important backline quality. But he missed a fair chunk of the season and we won games without him.

I'd expect him to pinch hit and he certainly proved a point. He's more than capable to lift his mid game to elite, just have to weigh up whether the Heeney/Jones combination is better than Heeney/Mills.

Personally I go with Jones, has that confiden e and great attack at the contest. Mills still lacks confidence, but it is pre-season after all. Could do with another pre-season or two to bulk up as well.

What is your obsession with bulking up?

Watched it on replay last night. My thoughts......

1. Anyone bagging Reid on that performance has rocks in their head. If he'd been there on GF Day and delivered that then we'd have won comfortably. 3 strong grabs but, more importantly, he stays in the contest and influences it to our advantage time after time. There was a play about half way through the 2nd quarter that exemplified what I mean. He pressured and caused a turnover deep in our forward line then shortly after won a ground ball in congestion and delivered a good handball for a goal scoring opportunity. Horse would have been thrilled with that performance after a year out.

2. Of the newbies, I thought Fox was the best. No disrespect to Cameron who was also very good. But Fox kept his feet and stayed in the contest time after time. I loved the way he refused to allow his tackles to be broken. In fact, on that, I think he'll debut Round 1.

3. Hewett is the Mitchell replacement. Not as much ball but better quality use. Jones is more like another Hannebery. Lot's to like about both.

4. Talia still has a long way to go and I just wonder if he has the footy nous. Whilst Newman was fluffing his kicks, Talia was misdirecting them. He looks the part but I'm just not sure that he is.

5. O'Riordan was playing just a bit too keen. He was always a couple of steps forward of where he should have been to get the dish off.

6. 2 nice goals from Florent but not a lot else. Not as excited by him as others on that performance. He did find a lot of the ball but lacked composure which I guess is understandable.

7. Overall I thought our stars were down and our rookies, aside from Cameron and Fox, played a bit like, well, rookies. Not quite ready to really own their spots. Nervous, excited, overawed..... Just need to calm it down a bit. They'll be better for the experience.

I liked Fox...

as i only got to listen to the radio broadcast where they preferred to constantly relay tedious anecdotes rather than commentate on the game i am wondering what you liked about his game as he was an interesting selection to me at the draft?

Agreed. The club should put some serious thought and work into Edwards.

Sorry. I shouldn't have provoked.

I get the difficulty some have in coming to the realisation that footy is no longer about clean passes to big key forwards for shots at goal.

:unamused:

Having at least one player capable of hitting a leading forward target who isn't simultaneously one of your leading forward targets would be handy, though. (Although I guess Heaney is moving into the middle this season).

We were caught out numerous times last year by our inability to maintain possession, in large part due to poor footskills.
