B: Nick Smith ~ Heath Grundy ~ Dane Rampe
HB: Callum Mills ~ Aliir Aliir ~ Zack Jones
M: Jake Lloyd ~ Josh Kennedy ~ Dan Hannebery
HF: Gary Rohan ~ Lance Franklin ~ George Hewett
F: Tom Papley ~ Kurt Tippett ~ Kieren Jack
R: Sam Naismith ~ Issac Heeney ~ Luke Parker
I/C: Daniel Robinson ~ Nick Newman ~ Harrison Marsh ~ Jarrad McVeigh
Em: James Rose, Harry Cunningham, Callum Sinclair

Depth: Jeremy Laidler, Micheal Talia, Brandon Jack, Jordan Dawson, Tyrone Leonardis, (+ draftees)

Note: Alex Johnson & Sam Reid were left off due to their injuries but both should be ready early-ish in the season hopefully.

Note: Dean Towers & Xavier Richards were left off as they may not be at the club next year.

Note: Didn't include Jack Hiscox or Abe Davis as they are uncontracted and maybe delisted.

____________-

Edit: I think we have a really strong line up. If one of our draftee's can step up and put pressure on we will be there/there abouts.

I like that you have included Newman. I think he will add a bit of run and kamikaze similar to Jones. After his year in the NEAFL and his upgrade to senior list i certainly think he is best 22.

I like it. But AJ goes out for Zak. Xav goes out for Reid. Robinson also prob steals an em position off Laids unless we need an extra defender who can play on a tallish opponent.

I really hope AJ gets back into the 22 though. It's where he belongs.
Agree. Too early for AJ, and Reid would replace Xav, whose heart doesn't seem to be in it, having requested a trade.

Fair call. Pick 9 is a good pick though.
Harry Perryman of Collingullie, if the rumours are correct, a skilled midfielder.

Read under - remind you of anyone? Very possible he plays in his 1st season.

From AFL Draft Central:
Strengths:
Footy IQ
Footskills
Clean with disposal
Versatility
Experience against stronger bodies
Harry Perryman has impressed right throughout 2016. What stands out in Perryman’s game is his football brain. Perryman’s outstanding ‘Footy IQ’ allows for him to find the football and dispose of it well, making good decisions with ball in hand.

I'm a big fan of Newman and agree that he is a big chance at playing in Round 1 but I don't think he could run out of sight on a dark night.

FB: Talia, Grundy, Aliir
HB: Jones, Rampe, Smith
C: Heeney, Kennedy, Mills
HF: McVeigh, Reid, Jack
FF: Papley, Franklin, Rohan
R: Tippett, Parker, Hannebery
INT: Hewett, Lloyd, Naismith, Scrimshaw

It is that time of year again and with trade week now over I am getting in early.

B: A.Johnson, A.Aliir, N.Smith
HB: D.Rampe, H.Grundy, J.McVeigh
C: I.Heeney, J.Kennedy, D.Hannebery
HF: G.Rohan, L.Franklin, L.Parker
F: X.Richards, K.Tippett, Papley
R: S.Naismith, C.Mills, K.Jack
I/C: J.Dawson, G.Hewett, J.Lloyd, H.Marsh
EMG: D.Towers, H.Cunningham, J.Laidler

In this I am assuming the best and assuming that Johnson will be fit and firing for the 2017 season. I am also assuming that we manage to convince XR to stay with us. If not XR then put Reid in but who knows if he will be fit. I also moved Rampe to halfback, as I think he would be excellent in that role if Johnson came back.

Out McVeigh, Richards, Laidler and Cunningham
In Jones, Newman, Reid and pick 17 - I don't know who that will be but I've a real good feeling one of our picks (more likely the later one) will catch fire like Papley did last year.

I doubt Johnson will make it back for R1 but as I rate the player and appreciate the optimism I won't opt him out of the team

Both of our last 2 first round draft picks have come straight into the best 22 and succeeded.
I'll be honest and say that I know nothing of this years crop but our trading strategy of getting higher in the draft means we are more than likely targeting someone specific so its not inconceivable that they come straight in.

Its hard to know at this stage with the draftee's/rookies and how they adapt to the AFL. If you had told me last year Papley would be best 22 when we drafted him, I would have laughed.

B: Jake Lloyd, Heath Grundy, Nick Smith
HB: Jeremy Laidler, Aliir Aliir, Dane Rampe
C: Kieren Jack, Dan Hannebery, Jarrad McVeigh
HF: Dean Towers, Lance Franklin, Luke Parker
F: Tom Papley, Sam Reid, Callum Mills
Foll: Kurt Tippett, Josh Kennedy, Isaac Heeney
Int: Sam Naismith, Gary Rohan, Zak Jones, George Hewett

Emergencies: Talia, Newman, Rose, B. Jack

If X. Richards stays I think he'll take Towers spot

I really rate him, undoubtedly GWS will match a pick for him. Setterfield is the high pick they might pass on, he's a bit less versatile in my book and they just have so much depth that they can be picky - they don't really have needs in their squad.

Ignoring the "start of 2017" because I think Reid will be best 22 even if not there rnd 1

Hoping for Mills to take some Midfield time this year
Heeney to almost certainly get more midfield minutes too

B: Smith, Grundy, Hewett
HB: Jones, Aliir, Rampe
C: Hanners, Jack, McVeigh
HF: Rohan, Reid, Franklin
F: Papley, Tippett, Heeney
Foll: Naismith, Kennedy, Parker

Think GWS will be more than ready and more than happy to match any Perryman bid.

It's really hard to work out a best 22 for next season. Every year we seem to turn over 5-6 positions at least, but at this time of year most of our 22's fairly closely resemble the side we had at the end of this year.

The senior guys who will be under pressure next year include Laidler, McVeigh, and to a much lesser extent Jack. Laidler is a clear out for mine, with McVeigh assuming the role of McGlynn 2016. At this stage I can't see Jack having too many issues holding his spot. This isn't a big knock on these guys either - just a case of natural progression as younger, fitter, faster guys start making a case for selection.

The other guys in doubt are those who have played well at times but haven't necessarily locked down their spot - Hewett, Towers*, XR*, Cunningham, Robinson and, at a stretch, Lloyd (thought he had a very solid 2016).

This is my rough guess at a best 22 - maybe not round 1 with McVeigh out, but some time next year.

Bold
= lock (in the side, positions may vary)

B: Smith, Grundy, Rampe
HB: Mills, Aliir, Newman
C: Hannebery, Jack, Jones
HF: Parker, Franklin, Rose
F: Papley, Reid, Rohan
Foll: Tippett, Kennedy, Heeney
Int: Lloyd, Hewett, Naismith, Johnson

E: Marsh, Foote, Sinclair

Depth: Towers*, Robinson, McVeigh, Laidler, X Richards*, Cunningham, Dawson, B Jack, Murray, Leonardis, 9, 19, 46, 49

I think the "try" will be McVeigh to the forward line as a creative but defensive forward. If that doesn't work I suspect he'll assist in player development at NEAFL level.

Jack is a lock because he will be captain

Would like to see Jack play more of a high-half forward role this year. Move Heeney and Hewett to the midfield. Jack is one of our best inside 50 kick in my opinion so he could be the link up between the defence/midfield and deep forward, and he also has the ability to be a crafty goal sneak and lay forward 50 pressure.

Kieren Jack in his prime was someone who would get 27 disposals, 7 tackles and 3 or 4 shots at goal. Should try and re-capture that.

According to news.com.au, here is our best 22 for 2017:

B: Jake Lloyd, Heath Grundy, Nick Smith
HB: Callum Mills, Aliir Aliir, Dane Rampe
C: Kieren Jack, Josh Kennedy, Jarrad McVeigh
HF: Isaac Heeney, Lance Franklin, George Hewett
F: Tom Papley, Kurt Tippett, Gary Rohan
R: Sam Naismith, Luke Parker, Daniel Hannebery
IC: Zak Jones, Jeremy Laidler, Brandon Jack, Harry Cunningham

Others: 2016 AFL Draft No. 9 pick, James Rose, Jack Hiscox, Michael Talia, Callum Sinclair
-----

Obviously not rating the chances of Reid or Johnson next year. Can't see us starting with Laidler, BJ and Cunningham in the same side..
