Best 22 for the start of 2017?

Will be interesting to see how McV goes with the young guys coming through.
I don't think Hewett adds enough at HF to hold down a spot, not fast enough to lock down, doesn't get it enough to do much else. Is he good enough to contribute in the midfield? I hope so - he's a good tackler and looks strong.

My team:

Smith - Grundy - Rampe
HB: Jones - Aliir - Lylod
C: Hannebery - Kennedy -Ronke
HF: Jack - Reid - Heeney
F: Rohan - Franklin - Papley
R: Tippett - Parker - Mills
INT: Sinclair - Foote - McVeigh -Towers/Hayward

Foote and Ronke to add quickness/toughness will give us the best team imo, with Hewett to get a fair few games if he can play through the mids as a contested ball player whenever we need injury cover.
Everyone hating on Sinclair on these threads but when he was fit he took marks out of defence around the 50 that we need and can kick goals too.
Id be pretty annoyed to see hewett and Naismith dropped. Much as ronke looks a good pick up from the rookie draft, I don't see him pushing for a spot this season, not ahead of some of the more mature bodies who have done thier time in the Magoo's.

I think Heeney showed that he is best suited as a mid.

B Smith Grundy McVeigh
HB Mills Aliir Rampe
C Heeney Parker Jones
HF Rohan Franklin Jack
F Papley Tippet Reid
Fol Naismith Kennedy Hannebery

Int Loyd Hewett Newman Rose

I can really see McVeigh in particular but also Jack slipping out of the best 22 this season, especially if some of the younger guys improve on a best case scenario basis.

We have some real depth this season, I really hope we utilise it, especially in the back half of the season, so that we can be as follows possible for finals. Players like Foote, Robinson, Rose, Talia, Laidler, Marsh, Johnson, O'Riordan, Dawson, Leonardis and the mature rookies like Edwards and Fox can hopefully all play few games, so that we know what they have to offer come finals, but also to keep the frontliners workloads down.

I agree on the need to rotate players a bit more. Many of our players were cooked by the end. Foote in particular should have had a few more games last year. I agree and hope McV and Jack get pushed for their spots. McV especially as he seems to have given up contested work. Hewett? What does he bring besides good tackling? Needs to find it more for me -he might in the mids if his tank is good enough. Laidler always seems to do a good job and is almost Grundy like in his intercept marking nowdays. Hard to leave out.

I prefer Heeney on the HF - for speccies and as he is a bit one pace for me and we have that a lot. Still looks to be spending plenty of time in mids this year.
Naismath = good bench cover imo. Gets plenty of taps, but what % to advantage? I'd be interested in that stat. I think it declined rapidly finals time as scouting on him improved.

I think we'll have a bloody good year, but GWS will be nigh on impossible to beat unless we get some pace through the middle. Hello Mr Ronke!

Hewett offers pretty damn decent contested marking, a very good set shot, and good disposal. Working off half forward there are only so many disposals he can get, he'll find it more once he moves into the mids. Heeney will be more dangerous as a forward when he is ghosting in unmarked from the midfield.

I think Sinclair is unfairly maligned, but we started getting a lot more clearances as soon as Naismith came in. Naismith is actually a ruckmen, so we can use Tippet forward more, whereas Sinclair is just a big bloke everywhere who doesn't bring down all the marks he should. Naismith is a better tap ruck, and damn near as good around the ground.

Laids is stiff, he is a damn good player. Just can't fit him in.

Tippet's best game is as a ruck who moves forward. Aslt FF he can be serviceable but despite his size he gets out muscled in one on ones. With Naismith and Tippet being fit I can't see Sinclair fitting into our 22. The only exception is if Reid is still injured I feel it'd be worth running 3 rucks

I think Tippet was best at that role because he was training for it, if he trains as a full forward hopefully we can get a bit more out of him. I do tend to agree, but I think the best combination of assets is Tippet at FF and Naismith rucking. Ideally we would have someone whose best game is spending exactly the amount of time in the ruck that Tippet best spends in the forward line, but as it is I'd rather have Tippet be mostly a forward than either of the other rucks.

I'm sure everything will change as the preseason ramps up, but for now I've got:

FB: Rampe, Grundy, Smith
HB: Jones, Aliir, Newman
C: Hannebery, Parker, Heeney
HF: Reid, Franklin, Rohan
FF: Papley, Tippett, McVeigh
Foll: Naismith, Kennedy, Jack

Int: Mills, Lloyd, Hewett, Robinson/Foote

Emg: Marsh, Laidler, Sinclair

Changes From the GF team:
Out: Laidler, McGlynn, Richards, Mitchell
In: Aliir, Newman, Reid, Robinson/Foote

Aliir and Reid give us much greater marking ability and athleticism at both ends, McVeigh moves closer to goal where his inability to chase will do less damage, Newman gives us a weapon off half back, and Mitchell's vacancy is filled by Heeney and Hewett spending more time in the middle.

Foote > Robbo

I like Robbo. Didnt do alot wrong and bunged his collarbone at the wrong time. Id have towers best 22 aswell.
Agreed on robbo.

Towers gets a lot of vitriol on this board, but his mid season form was very good last year.

I hereby decree we chuck rampe into the midfield for some game time next year. Excellent by foot, was a midfielder in the neafl and with the added benefit of being quick he might just be what we need through the guts. Also talia coming back in might free him up to go up the ground.

I doubt it will happen (I also doubt anyone agrees with me) because he's so valuable down back but I would love to see what he could do in the middle.

Sir Dane could watch from the stands with a tinny all season and still make a claim for All Australian. Chuck him anywhere and we'll be fine.

i'm probably being optimistic but i want something as close to our grand final side as possible. two shit games that happened to be in October over the last few years is all that's stopped us from having three flags under Horse. I know we have a few chokers on our list but they're also players who have helped us reach top four the last five years, win two minor premierships, reach three grand finals and win one flag. I see no reason we can't be there again next year. Even with our shit disposal and lack of speed we've shown when we come to play we can beat GWS and the Bulldogs and we beat the Hawks during their reign plenty of times. Horse just has to do something to make us lift on grand final day instead of deflate.

That's legit my only concern for 2017... how we would handle the GF if we were to make it. Other than that our team is fine

We lost all our 2015 and 2016 games against the Bulldogs, and the Giants belted us twice in 2016 after we won the first game by 25.

Few changes to this side so ill have a crack to wrap my brain around a best 22.

N.Smith - Grundy - Rampe

Newman - Aliir - McVeigh

J.Lloyd - Kennedy - Heeney

Jack - Franklin - Rohan

Papley - Sinclair - S.Reid

Tippett - Hannebery - Parker

Mills, Z.Jones, Hewett, Foote/Fox/Robinson

Great effort. Naismith comes in ti first ruck and Tippett moves to ff. Sinclair is emergency.

McVeigh wont be playing on a half back flank. Try Rohan. Dawson will be on a half forward flank.
