I thought Read may take a bit more time and have to bide his time

I guess in 3 years you want Read in the side, but i thought he could potentially lead the ruck if he develops right in say 2028

Has Mac been training as a defender and none fwd?
Defender I believe. Guess they see thats his best position, no matter how well he did forward. Mac even mentioned in the off season its where he feels he is best suited.

Looks like Dimma is committed (at the moment) to playing Read as one of our key forwards along with King and Walter. Mac will be swung forward and in the ruck at times, but it looks like he'll play mostly down back this season.

Walter is also out Opening round through suspension so I’d expect read to partner king fwd.

That is a decent side with some decent players missing out.

I'd be happy with that, do you think we pick 3 tall fwds on merit or is it to cover each other?

I’m not yet sold on Read as a forward, but we do need someone to chop out ruck and we probably don’t want it to be Mac (unless we play Mac forward) or Walter, though I feel Walter could ruck in the forward half.

So, yeah. King and Walter as the main two and Read for coverage seems the go for the start of the year.

But with Walter out for Opening Round, I’d consider just going extra small (especially if it’s wet) and then adjust for Round 1 when Walter slots back in.

I probably wouldn't play Read if we had another viable back up ruckman (unless you want to play Himmelberg), so he plays in because of that, hopefully this fast tracks his development. If Andrew played forward then Read is definitely back in the 2's.

My other issue I feel is our defence feels too tall? Especially with small forwards being the flavour at the moment having Collins, Ballard and Andrew back there. I'd almost rather slip in a Jeffrey or someone else instead of Ballard if everyone is fit for the foot skills coming out of the back half, but can't see Hardwick going with that.

Or have Andrew go forward, move Read back to the 2's and then Ballard and Collins can be your 2 key defensive posts.

All sounds doable, will be interesting to see what happens

Yeah true. I see the logic in Read as a forward/ruck, but I don’t buy into the fast-tracking development mentality fully. He may not be ready.

I feel like this isn’t the year for it. I’m not saying Read won’t be any good, but if it doesn’t work early rounds we have to cut the experiment quick and let him develop and try something else.

Unfortunately, we traded/delisted most of our forward tall depth, so Himmelberg is the only other option unless one of our 4 rucks can become a resting forward…

Mac is our only other real option to swing forward, unless we go two tall forwards and use Mac/Walter to ruck in their respective halves.

Definitely some magnets for Dimma to move.

Setup for me is still Mac out of defence... Id play him HFF and let him go wherever he wants... I think he is too skilled to just have him punching the ball in defence, I want other teams to be worried about how they are going to defend him.

The backline of Collins Ballard Powell Uwland Jeffrey Noble Rioli Buddas is solid enough without him...

The fwd line is clearly the part of the grund that looks pretty thin for us, Mac played as more of a utility makes us more dangerous imo.

It may end up coming to that. The best defence is a good offence. We have good interceptors (even without Mac) and fast rebounders, and certainly get the ball forward 50 enough.

If we turn it into a couple more goals early game, it should snowball more often than not. I don’t care where or who those goals come from.
