BLONDIE - Love them or Loathe them?

It's 30 years ago since they released their self-titled debut album, and for pretty much all that time, they have been my all-time favourite band. They crafted some of the most memorable pop tunes of their era, such as 'Call Me', 'Tide Is High', 'Hanging on the Telephone', 'Atomic' and 'Heart of Glass', which still seems to be a very popular song on the dancefloors. And were wonderfully lead by the sulty and sexy Deborah Harry who had the voice to match. A greatly under rated band IMO who were everybit as influental in their day, as other artists of their time.

Just wondering if there are any other Blondie fans out there, or what your opinion is of their music.

Can't see how any one could loathe them. Many catchy tunes and Deborah Harry was hot.

How could one hate them. They are as close to perfection as power pop gets. Hanging on the Telephone - its better than any other single made in the last five years

Nothing to hate about them, you either love them or you are totally disinterested in that type of music.

Atomic and Hanging On The Telephone set the groundrules in how to write the perfect pop song.

Call Me, Union City Blues, In The Flesh, Rapture and Heart Of Glass are also classics.

My only complaint is that classic radio stations play too much Heart Of Glass and not enough of the other Blondie songs.

That's true - it would be great if they could play stuff like - Dreaming and Denis Denis or Picture this - I might listen to Gold FM if they played them from time to time

Too often when lists of my favourite 5 bands go up I somehow overlook this band. They are truly a special band and should go down as one of the greats in the history of popular music.

The stand out for me is Parallel Lines with Eat to the Beat and Plastic Letters not far behind.

Fave song is "Fade away and radiate" with "I'm gonna love you too" and "Detroit 442" close behind.

"Fade Away and Radiate" is one of my all-time favourite Blondie songs, it's just a brilliant tune. A little unusual, but fits in so perfectly with the other songs on the "Parallel Lines" album. A couple of other songs I love, that are unknown to most are "Attack of the Giant Ants", "Youth Nabbed By Sniper", "Angels On the Balcony", "Orchid Club", "Victor" and "Slow Motion". They just had this amazing ability to continually create catchy pop tunes, and always sounded a little different to anything else around that time.

Definitely in my top five bands ever and Parallel Lines would be in my top 5 albums. My favourite songs would be The Tide is High, Atomic, Picture This, Union City Blues, and One Way or Another.

The Nerves:thumbsu:

Lee, Peter Case and Paul Collins were fine songwriters. Case went on to an exceptional career with The Plimsouls and solo. Also just remembered Lee also wrote "Will Anything Happen?" as well on "Parellel Lines."

On Blondie personally prefer the first two albums and the strong points of the next two only.

They weren't a bad band but I don't like it when they're compared to the other great bands who played at CBGB's. Blondie were wusses compared to those punk groups.

I know it's all a matter of opinion, but no one has been able to satisfactorally explain to me why Blondie should not be compared favourably with other bands/artists from CBGB's era, especially when most of them were rather deplorable IMO (Ramones and Talking Heads excluded). Sure their music was a little different, punk sensibilities, with 60's pop hooks, did not go down well the punk establishment at the time, and having a sexy, cool blonde wouldn't have helped either, especially when punk was about getting away from 50's and 60's iconic culture, but Blondie was no different to the others, they just weren't as depressing.

They were more commercially successful, and pretentious punk purists think somehow thats a bad thing and gives them less credibility than their less talented peers like Television.
