Must have been a pretty serious hamstring for Owies, much more severe than the initial diagnosis.

Great to see Boyd and Cottrell nearing a return. They will be important pieces as the season rolls on.

Usually a grade 1 hamstring strain is 2-3 weeks. He is starting to develop a soft tissue injury history so maybe we are being extra careful.

Owies was doing a lot of stretches on boundary line in the last practice match so there probably was already some tightness there even then. Hopefully he does not become like Shuey for West Coast when it just never really goes away.

Precautionary for Owies, then blows out to 4 weeks when there was thinking he’d be a test for this week.
Strings/s are becoming concerning for O-Dawg.

Was it ever "precautionary"?

Voss post match presser (April 1st):
“Matty [Owies] got a tight hamstring. To what scale I don’t know, but we think it’s minor. We’ll follow due process and get that looked at on Monday."

Round 4 injury update (April 4th):
Matt Owies (hamstring)
  • Scans have confirmed a hamstring strain
  • Will miss Round 4 and will need to be assessed further over the next week to determine possible timeline on his return

Round 5 team announcement (April 12th)
"Matt Owies (hamstring) – expected to be available in Round 8."

None of that reads as him being a test for R5.

Voss in the immediate interview after the game said they thought it was minor, but as we know you never really know til you get it properly checked. Also mentioned that there would be scans on the Monday.

On the Tuesday we got an update stating that scans had confirmed a strain and that he would miss R4, with a timeline on his return TBD. Nothing to indicate it was a one week injury, just that he would definitely miss that week and more updates would follow.

A week later they appear to have formulated a timeline that has him missing 4 games total. Maybe more than the average, but it could just be that we're taking an ultra-conservative approach early this season. Holds weight when you look at the way we've managed Walsh's return.

Cottrell and Boyd back will be good. Cottrell probably not best 22 but he needs these developing games. If he puts a bit of size on he could fill in the gaps in his game and become that sub O'Brien is at the moment or extra wingman. Boyd could come straight in with Docherty missing.

i thought cottrell was well on his way to be being in our best team last year, playing as the third winger, defensive forward.

the guy can run all day, doesn't shirk from body contact, runs well defensively and when he gets a look at goals is a good finisher, from both set shots and in play.

disposal was shaky and his game awareness maybe isn't as good as some but he has improved each of those elements year on year.

Things have changed with Acres and Hollands coming in. I think he's going to give O'Brien a run for his money and will probably pass him but he really does need to develop physically. You could probably put a case forward that maybe if he's fit he plays those games that O'Brien and Honey have played. I don't think he's pushing any of the forwards out of the team. I wouldn't mind seeing how he goes as a defensive player. His ability to push up and back is valuable but he is still a developing player.

Cotts is an excellent role and structure player. Can get back in defence and help, keeps his width on the wing, and can get forward and take marks. He's not a match winner but he's a guy who will always do his role for the team, whatever it is. Every club needs them.

On talent and ability he's not best 22, but consistent effort and coachability mean he's someone players like playing with and coaches like in the team. Even the fans love those workmen type fwiw, just look at how often he's mentioned on here!

Based on last year, I think Cotts is currently ahead of LOB, and will put pressure on others in the side.

I see Boyd as a lock in the back 7, especially with Williams out for the year
Boyds speed, kicking and intensity is really good for us. He was developing his ball finding game too. It's a shame he has been injured.

I think Cotts is ahead as well, his game is a little more complete. If his body develops and his contested game and tackling improves he goes past O'Brien easily IMO. This is what's been good about Hollands and Acres, two new wingers who can run and find possession but they also do really well in the contest and they tackle well.

Cotterell as part of his development should be looking at being a multiple positional player. Wing, half forward, half back. If he can do that, he doesn't have to be best 22 to play a lot of games, be a valuable player and play for a long time. A genuine utility like that would be extremely handy, especially with smaller lists and our team and it's injuries. Also makes him the perfect SUB.

He could be a decent sub. He's not as good a field kick as LOB but he brings so much more hardness, pressure...and he's actually a much better kick for goal than LOB.

LOBS field kicking is a tad overrated - of late his kicking to advantage has been dodgy.

If he doesn’t bring that, he’s bring nada.

At least Cotters has some hardness & his disposal last year got better.

Boyd is interesting - we’ve barely seen him. Looks a package - but then so do Cunners & Marchy.

I get the feeling Cotts is physically close to the finished product - he's one of those wiry strong guys

Cotts improved dramatically last year, gameplan also played a big part

2022, his kicking efficiency was better than LOB

I think he will end up being a similar build to Acres, has a bit of a way to go but he's getting there. Plenty of really skinny guys come into the game like Fyfe and then fill out, he's taken his time doing it but that's fine.

Cotterell 'types' flourish when there is enough class around them to work their strengths - at least he has a natural feel for a contest and doesn't wilt when he has a set shot opportunity - certainly strong enough to provide forward pressure - definition of a role player with genuine running ability as his one wood.

Probably takes more safe options, but LOB's kicks i50 are his biggest strengths.

When both at their best, Cotts might be ahead of LOB in every other facet of the game...so I probably prefer Cotts.

In any case, both are behind Hollands and Acres.

Owies has plenty of history with his hammies. The first two years of QLD training attendance for me had him as basically a non participant. His early Cat B years were punctuated with hamstring issues and wasn’t until later in his second season he had some continuity. Well remember a face I was not familiar with at the time grimacing in the hands of trainers on the sidelines at Maroochydore.

They will not take chances with him. Not quite Gov/Martin territory, but somewhat chronic predisposition.

I think he is just asking his body to run at above its physical capacity - expect repeat issues...

If LOB carried over his late 2022 form (plus a bit more development) into 2023, he'd be well ahead of Cotts in my book as a starting mid. He'd be the bloke you look to play through as much as you can.

Unfortunately, he seems low on confidence and while he's approaching contests with a bit more intent, he's not making the most of the opportunities when they come his way. Acres and Hollands now pretty much locked in for the two wings - Acres the experienced one we needed, and Hollands offering as much as LOB with 5 years less development. If we're picking a wingman as the SUB, I'd now lean towards Cottrell. Can do the defensive running that LOB has done this season, but offers a bit more up forward and is going to be more reliable in winning/halving those important 1v1's in a tight game.

Disappointing. I was really optimistic with LOB coming into this season. Looked like he was just starting to hit his straps and round out his game. Unfortunately it seems an improvement in his contested intent has coincided with a drop in his ability to accumulate and distribute the ball with any regularity.
