Not unusual for someone without any previous coaching experience to not be offered a coaching role.

We have too often gone down the path of unsuitable candidates or jobs for the boys to fill important positions.

Yeah - reckon whatever might have been promised under the old regime went out the door with them. MLG, Liddle, Teague etc. could have offered Betts a coaching gig once he retired as part of the deal to get him back, but if Sayers and Cook decided they wanted as much experience as possible on the coaching panel then a handshake agreement wouldn't have been worth squat.

Anyone listening to Eddie's presser on trade radio?

Carlton didn't offer him a coaching role they only offered him a field marketing role. While Geelong has offered him a development coaching role that's the reason why he's gone to Geelong.

I would agree with that. We need an experienced group of coaches to support Voss. We're not in a position to appoint a first time asst coach in my view. Maybe poach him back after a few years' experience.

Reckon I would.

Would they?
Depends on their needs I suppose. If they value next year over this one they'd have to be tempted. And if they thought Carlton are going to finish in bottom half again next year they'd also have to be interested. But I don't know enough about where they are at. It'd be an interesting move though (and I think we'd have to secure a F3 from somewhere to make it happen).

Austin The Freo guy blinked
or they negotiated a deal that worked for all involved - this incessant need to win deals.......believe it or not, trades can be made to benefit both parties....

There can be only one.

Particularly in this situation where it wasnt Freo wanting him gone, but Cerra wanting a move home. Both clubs find a way to make a fair trade.

This is what happens when you play SPS out of position for five years and then barely play him in his final year. We got what we deserved.

SPS had plenty of opportunity - we played him in 60-odd games as a mid-forward, before trialling him back because he was struggling. He had a short patch of form there but became superflous beacuse of the addition of Williams and Saad (and the return of Docherty), who are just better all-round players.

For all the talk about his 'skills', that always seemed to be more about draft position than anything else to me. As a ball-winner, he only twice in his career went past 25 touches (as a contrast, Zac Fisher went in the same draft and has racked up 25+ on four occasions, with less opportunity. Cerra, who replaces SPS, has 9 games over 25 disposals in one less season of footy). He rarely had scoreboard impact, and his disposal was ordinary. His defensive skills were poor, but improved a bit with time. He was also pretty soft and didn't lay tackle pressure, and not particularly quick.

All-round, SPS is fine. But he doesn't have a natural position, he isn't a damaging player, really didn't show all that much in very extensive opportunities.

It simply isn't that big a loss to Carlton. If West Coast can unlock something, good for them. There was a bit of a spark to SPS in his first season that got lost somewhere along the way but from their perspective, they are taking a bit of a flyer on a guy who has played extesively at AFL level and who has generally been found to be bog average. Maybe being closer to home and getting a fresh start helps?

In a weird way, Lewis Young is a bigger need for us right now. He's at least capable of backing up Jones and Weitering, can offer flexibility up forwrad or in the ruck if injuries hit, and is younger and has time on his side to develop. This might end up being a win-win trade all round.
