I don't have any idea where the Baker rumor started. Even if he wanted to come to us we wouldn't have nearly the amount of cash he'd be offered elsewhere.

We have some pretty basic priorities at this stage:

  • Re-sign our own
  • Hit the draft and keep a very strong age profile throughout the list so there are no gaps
  • Trade for secondary types (moneyball, budget) who fill out gaps in the best 22 and depth
The nucleus for something very special is already there. Without getting too ahead of ourselves we can slowly begin transitioning into a phase where continuous improvement and longevity is the primary focus.
Great summary

Why are the crows letting him go with those attributes?

I'm assuming you're not questioning those attributes, because they're well documented and supported by stats and the eye test. Instead, you're querying what deficiencies he has that would have Adelaide open to trading him despite the known strengths?

Hard to be sure from the outside of course.

He's slight, not a particularly physical player - though as a wing it's not a dealbreaker.

Adelaide picked up Dawson in the off season who is a class, mature wing/HB. Gameplan-wise I think they're trying to be more corridor focused, and already have some strong runners (Laird, Dawson, Berry, Keays, McHenry, Soligo etc.) who make a specialised wing like Sholl less of a requirement on gameday.

Coach Nicks was also on record last year regarding a drop in confidence which affected Sholl's gameplay at the back end of the year.

He's a VIC lad and may have hit a point where he's just keen to come back closer to family support networks.

So Sholl is 22, had a bit of a drop in form late last year, some players improved around him, a top class mature age wing was recruited, he's feeling a bit on the outer - a range of factors that have him may down the pecking order.

Then he sees an opportunity to move home and play for the club his old man played for, that he supported, and that just so happens to have a wing position up for grabs. He's not a required player at Adelaide, they know they have options in his position, he's not going to justify a huge trade - it may just be one of those "works for all parties" situations.

I agree that he's not an exciting prospect. It's not like when Cerra or Saad were linked to us - big names, proven performers. But Sholl presents as a potential low cost, high potential recruit who, at the bare minimum, would probably provide injury/form cover for LOB with a similar skillset and output.

That’s all fair points, according to his stats on his AFL profile for 2022, in all key attributes his ranked either average or below average. Like I said nothing personal against the kid, if we get him I hope he proves me wrong and does well. Just my personal opinion I’d rather draft a kid or put the money elsewhere, mainly getting Charlie, Harry, TDK signed

Yeah, the CD breakpoints are weird. I don't pay much attention to them. I mean - he's being rated there as a "Midfielder" - it stands to reason he's going to be below the average in disposal count when he's in the same bracket as guys like Walsh, Oliver, Miller, Bont etc. That in turn tanks his rating for kicks, contested possessions, clearances, score involvements, metres gained etc. because the average is skewed by the massive numbers you see from the top 2-3 mids in every side.

I'd certainly be curious as to what money he's on though. Can't think it would be much.

Drafted end of 2018 (Pick 64)
SANFL all of 2019
Signed a 2-yr extension mid 2019.
8 games in 2020.
19 games in 2021.
Signs a 2-yr extension mid 2021.
11 games so far in 2022.

So twice has signed an extension a year and a half before coming out of contract. Indicates a player that the Crows were happy with, and probably meant he was taking a fairly standard deal for a young player - no holding out for more money or playing the field. You don't give a two year extension to a player midway through 2021 securing his services til end of 2024, then 12 months later flip to "he's a hacl, get rid of him".

I may be completely wrong on this, but I genuinely feel he's a quality young role player who the Crows would be happy to keep, but will trade for a fair deal if he feels he needs to move. No bad will, no hardline negotiations, just business as usual and move on.

Would love to see how he went in our environment, which I think would be a massive change from Adelaide.

I’ve not looked at numbers - but I’ve watched him play. He’ll be eaten up on here moreso than even O’Brien.

He plays just fine. In the championships he played a game as a centre square mid, at AFL level can play anywhere from HBF, wing, HF. Given his kicking skills, clubs would prefer him to play on the outside, but isn't shy of winning his own pill

Damian Barrett said today on Triple M, that Ash Hansen has taken himself out of the running for the GWS job. Personal reasons, can’t leave Melbourne

Guess that rules out North as well, won't want to have to relocate to Tassie within a couple years.

Geez, thinking about it - if Clarko hypothetically took the North gig, does that potentially change the tune down on the Apple Isle in regards to a relocated team? How strong are their convictions if a relocated North side comes with Clarko and a bunch of established players?

May not be a strong contested player, but he shows plenty of composure even when being pressured. Doesn't rush or panic even when he's got a player bearing down on him. That's one area he certainly has LOB covered.
