this thread has way too much levity = we're taking adelaide way too lightly...............

Now they know how we feel. Everyone takes us way too lightly. Even Norf.

Well considering what we got for a 31 year old Jarrad Waite who played for another 4 seasons and had is best goal scoring year after leaving us, I'm not holding out much hope for compensation.

If it were a 36 year old Buddy Franklin though ....

maybe we would have got something if he had kicked those goals the season before he left.....

Really come full circle if Jones heads back to the Dogs, but he fits their list needs.

They have enough dour backman who can hold down an opponent but aren’t great interceptors.

At least we will cop a pick, rather than lose out completely if Jones had of been de-registered.
Bring him back as a full forward - real full circle 🤣

I'd swing Weiters forward and have him calling out misleading instructions to Jones - see if the old instincts kick in :p
Like "don't worry about Zurhaar, he can't hurt ya".

"Jonesy, my ball, stay out! Stay out!"

Uncontested mark

I still think we would have got a 3rd last year. Can't recall a >30 year old who has netted better then a 3rd round pick as free agency compo. Issac Smith got a 2 year contract at 450k a year as a 31 year old and only netted a 3rd.

I reckon they will give us at least that though. A 3rd will be enough to appease us without p#ssing anyone else off. Giving us a 2nd would be a lot more contentious.
I admit to not knowing the rules around free agency all that well, but why would LJ have been a free agent last year? We traded him in from the Dogs, he hadn't played that long with us (5 or 6 years?). Wouldn't they have had to trade with us to get him back?

If it's a trade scenario, then the form he was in, plus the value he would represent to a team missing a vital piece for a premiership tilt, could have easily seen a 2rd round pick coming back to us.

Not exactly the same as a free agent you are right but they will need to come up with some logic on how to compensate us and that's probably as close as they get.

That's what they (the AFL) might say. But I hope the club argues it more sternly than that:
  1. We lost a quality senior player due to the AFL's rules;
  2. We lost that quality player LAST year (as others have said);
  3. That player has now been offered a 3 year deal;
Therefore, we have effectively missed out on 4 years of a quality AFL full back (not to mention that if we'd had him this year our results might have been substantially different) as a direct result of AFL rules.

These are the variables that should be fed into any compensation formula.

And the simplest question to pose to the AFL (if indeed he goes to the Dogs) is "What would the Bulldogs have given up last year to obtain the services of Liam Jones?". I think the answer is more than just a 3rd rounder; they accepted that for a KPB who wasn't getting a game.

Its not the AFL's fault he didnt play this year, its Liam Jones fault - we dont get or deserve compensation for an individuals decisions re vaccinations.

we will get compensation, it will be a 3rd rounder as has been spruiked everywhere and i would suggest already agreed upon between all parties.

I really shouldn't bother responding to you, given your constant trolling on this board. But for the sake of addressing the argument ...

I didn't say it was the AFL's fault, I said "due to the AFL's rules". That is, due to circumstances beyond the Club's control.

An interesting post re: Sholl from the Crow's board (for those after more background info):

He has 5 Brownlow votes. 3 in his 'breakout' game against an unmotivated Carlton when nobody knew what he was capable of, and 2 vs North Melbourne who are not capable of providing any meaningful opposition (Note that Sholl hasn't played in any of the charity wins since that one)

Atkins debuted relatively late in age, showed good signs in early matches and after a handful of games started ripping games apart with his pace and evasion, and continued well into his second year. By late in his third year his game was well understood and he had failed to add anything more to his game, and thus was easily countered by any opposition who did a moderate amount of planning. People were already accusing him of going soft/etc. at this point.

It's fair to call it a huge failure of the Crows to develop either of these players further. But the key failure is that both have never expanded beyond a one-dimensional player with one easily identifiable skill, not that any new habits crept into their game.

Enjoyed this one:

Sholl is a one dimensional player so doesn't get a game

Meanwhile several zero dimensional players are locks

If he didn't retire, he would be a Free Agent at the end of this year (probably a Restricted Free agent on 500k, but not 100% sure).

Hopefully beginning of third round, rather than tied to our ladder position.

Yeah, but that's the end of this year. We lost him at the end of last year. As I said, what would the WB's have given up for him last year? They had no FA option, it wouldn't have even come into play.

Former Carlton defender Liam Jones wants to join the Western Bulldogs, reports SEN’s Sam Edmund.

Edmund understands that a three-year deal is in the works for Jones to return to the Bulldogs for 2023, the club where he began his AFL career.

Enjoyed this one:

Revisionist and trying to soften his loss.

Incredibly common occurence, the old "second year blues". He got a taste of senior footy in 2020, played most of the season with decent output in 2021, has had a marginal (and I mean very marginal) decline in output in his 11 games in 2022.

This decline may not even be a decline, factoring in that he appears to have been subbed in late once in each of 2021 and 2022. Given he played significantly more games in 2021, a single game on massively reduced time (21% TOG) in 2021 would have less impact on his averages than a single game on even more reduced time (14% TOG) in 2022.

He's not an elite player (yet, and may never get there), but there's been no discernible reduction in his effectiveness from last year to this year. In 6 of his 9 full games this year he had 20+ disposals. Compare that to 8 of 17 last season.

Even if he had seen a big drop off, it's a very strange criticism. Nobody goes writing off a player because they struggle to back up a breakout season, it's pretty much always understood to be part of the learning process.

Depends on the value of the final year of his contract, not the averaged value over time. Same reason Hewett was a free agent as his deal was highly backended.

With Jones and the way his contract was structured then restructured for this year AND the AFL's intentionally murky compensation process...

I didn’t realize Sholl was BOG against us - and McGovern kicked 5 against us too. Looks like one recruiters continue to follow the same strategy.

If McGovern can continue to hold the fort ably down back (and its a big if) he would have been a worthwhile acquisition for us

Weitering certainly plays with a bit more confidence and swag having Brackets back there last week.

Funny how we might have already had our Jones replacement on our books.
