I follow Jarrod Kimber on FB and usually just get a little teaser of his videos and rarely watch the full clip on his YouTube channel but one of his videos piqued my interest today, talking about some interesting overs-unders betting patterns that raised eyebrows in some recent BPL games and this one in particular which if we are being generous was…. Worth a second or third look.

Basically for the uninitiated most T20 leagues are subject to over/under live betting with agencies at various junctures of the innings and the ‘line’ (it might be 78.5 runs after 10 overs) changes literally every ball depending on what has just happened in the game, and the odds never change: the agencies pay $2 depending on what you are backing.

There had already been some suspicious games.

Then this happened:

I bet a fair bit on cricket and follow a lot of cricket bettors who froth on betting on these leagues which really only exist because there are people willing to bet on them.

They were all suspicious of those wides straight away from the betting patterns and then the egregiousness of those wides. I mean if you were following it at all how could you not be?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but because the line is perpetually changing for new bets to be placed, for the fix to occur, it would have to relate to:

- a bet placed at the start of the game so the player(s) involved knew what outcome had to be achieved, barring some sort of earpiece being worn on the field

- the player is aware of what has to happen as it’s unfolding and is fed the information and dictates the events accordingly.

For the second scenario to occur the captain at the very least has to be in on it, in accordance with the player he is going to go to for that last over if it comes down to it, and for the first scenario it’s possible that he is bringing others into it as well to make sure they get it done. ‘Ie. he needs at least 2-3 guys to be there underperforming to guarantee that this gets done from the start to make sure of it if they have a specific number from the outset.’
If it’s just two overs before they get to the deadline he can just call on his ‘one guy’ to bowl a dreadful over I guess.

The captain is Thisara Perera for what it’s worth
