More info on Brett Montgomery

When Montgomery was dropped from Essendon's list he headed to England to play club cricket. He had captained the Victorian u19 cricket team. He played cricket in the Durham and Middlesex leagues in 1992 and 1993.

On return to Melbourne he played footy for Springvale where he played in a flag side. He played on the Footscray supplementary list in 1996 and won the best and fairest and was drafted by the Dogs. He became a handy component of the side in 1997. At 23 he was a latecomer to AFL ranks, but showed plenty of ability when given chances across half forward. He was hardly a speedster but had exquisite skills and a strong leap.

He was something of a surprise trade to Port and responded by winning the best and fairest in his first year at his new club where he showed a scope to his game beyond big marks.

He was involved in controversy at the start of the 2001 season when he almost walked out on the club but he settled down and had a solid year.

Montgomery was back to something like his best in 2002 as one of Port's best players. generally he played off the half back flank or wing and he confirmed his reputation as a strong mark and great worker.

He had a steady if unspectacular year in 2003 despite missing five weeks with a knee injury early in the season.

In 2004 he began well enough, but a back injury sidelined him for 10 weeks. He picked up the threads quickly and his experience was valuable in the run home. He was a steady contributor in the premiership win.

Brett played 23 games for Port in the 2005 season before being delisted under some acrimony at season's end. He spent a further 2 seasons (18 games) with the Bulldogs and is an assistant coach at Carlton (2008).
