We need to Symonds back into the Australian team.

We are missing him in all facets of his game. Aggressive batting, ability to bowl medium pace/off spin and his athletic fielding.

Although it seems perfectly clear that it he wont play in India but I just hope hes back in for our home test series' this summer.

Who goes out you ask?
Either Watson or White is the answer

Watson is not damaging enough as a batsman or a bowler
Likewise with White

Preferably id like to see White dropped for Symonds
and Watson dropped for a 4th quick. Be it Siddle/Tait/Bollinger.

Symonds can bowl spin or mediums when needed.

I agree with you. However, you must understand that he is out of form himself and can't come back into the squad until he gets back into good form.

Hi Mr Natural.... I went to the GABBA last Sunday and watched the Bulls v Victoria. Symonds batted poorly, again, did nothing in the field apart from look completely disinterested in being there and appeared to be sulking out on the mid-wicket boundary for the first half of the Victorian innings. When his skipper finally got a breakthrough, he was the last bloke into the huddle and didn't really even seem to celebrate the wicket with his teammates. When he finally got a trundle, i think he finished up with 1/30 or something off about a half a dozen overs. I really like Andrew Symonds at his best, in fact, he was the clincher for me and my mates to actually bother going to the GABBA for the game, but from what i saw, he's not really enjoying cricket.
He's probably better off just retiring from representative cricket and then just picking up a big cheque once a year in the IPL. He'd have oodles of coin behind him already, so its not like he needs to play for cash anymore.
His hearts not in it for QLD and his form is not good enough to earn a recall to the Australian team.

Sad to say it, but I agree.
Much like Shaun Tait not that long ago, I suspect he needs a complete break from cricket, and to think long and hard about whether or not he wants to play any more, or does indeed just want the big cheques.

Australia has been obsessed with the seach for a genuine all rounder for years now. No doubt Watson and Symonds are good players but IMO I'd rather have 6 specialist batsmen (if one or two can bowl a few overs it's a bonus, like Pup and Katich), 4 specialist bowlers (if available a genuine spinner) and focus on a having the best available batting keeper as the team all rounder.

Lack of dedication, lack of commitment, undisciplined, arrogant and highly unlikely to improve the teams spirit speaking long-term.

Other than his proven ability, I honestly can't justify his selection in the team.

Sutherland remains optimistic (but put the "it is believed" journo bullcrap aside):

TROUBLED cricketer Andrew Symonds is in a "good place" and it is believed the talented all-rounder could return to the national team as soon as November 20 for the first Test between Australia and New Zealand.

Cricket Australia chief James Sutherland met Symonds recently in an effort to gauge the cricketer's wellbeing and the administrator was impressed by the Queenslander's progress.

Symonds was axed from the Australian cricket team after the "gone fishing" controversy in Darwin in August. Although Sutherland would not specify a date, it is believed Symonds is on track to return to the national team in the Brisbane Test.

"We had a good chat," Sutherland said. "Over the last month or so, I've had regular chats with Andrew over the phone and I caught up with him face-to-face in Brisbane a few weeks ago — as much as anything, to be able to talk to him face-to-face and see how he's coming along. It was a good chat. He understands where we are up to and vice versa.

"He'd probably be liking to make a few more runs. I think he's in a good place. I know talking to him and others who are close to him as he seeks to come back to full strength — mental, physical and skill-wise — that he's progressing really well.

"He's in a good place and perhaps one of the missing bits of the jigsaw at the moment is just his on-field form.

"Certainly in terms of effort and application, everything is really, really good."

Symonds has scored just 43 runs in seven innings for Queensland since he was booted from the Australian team.

Form aside, Sutherland said there would be no "crunch meeting" to decide Symonds' return but he said he would continue to stay in touch with the cricketer on his road to redemption.

-from age

Not that he's a selector, but it's a different angle on things. I hope he does eventually get right and come back to his best.

That article from Hilditch is extremely optimistic - I cant see how australian selectors can consider him for a recall with very few runs coming off his blade.

From Symonds perspective, I can kind of understand why he would be frustrated... not making any runs, not getting a bowl until the game is over and running the boundary for 50 overs. He'd probably be thinking, why am i out here risking my body for $5000 a game when I can just save myself and pick up 1.2 million for six weeks work in the IPL in 09. Then I can go fishing/drink beer/play golf/root hotties etc for the other 10 months of the year.
I think 20/20 and the IPL is going to kill off domestic cricket - just judging that on Symonds and a disgruntled Ash Noffke's comments after he was omitted from the Indian Tour that he'd probably concentrate on getting an IPL contract next year.

Putting aside all the off-field stuff (because I haven't been arsed following it all), the simple reason is his form, or lack thereof.

Ever since he was sent home from Darwin, he's hardly made a run. Either in those tour matches they had, or domestically.

If he was blazing away for Qld, and seemed genuinely committed and back in form, I would want him back.

eventhough i am an indian, as an australia fan at all times in sport, i am feeling really sick seeing the aussie team beaten black and blue and the moronic aussie selectors are the biggest culprits, how on earth roy symonds is not in the team and why the hell katich/watson/white are playing, these three(katich/watson/white) are ok cricketers but white and watson are bits and pieces and katich has never deserved a place in the aussie team and never will

We do need him back badly but given the history between him and the Indians and their supporters I would fear for his well being. He dosen't need to be treated like that by these savages.

To be honest Symonds will only need a couple of good knocks in the shield to start banging on the door again.

He is a magnificent player and we have missed his presence here in India.

Ahem Symonds was nowhere even near the door when he was picked for Australia, he was only picked because Watson got injured and the selectors HAD to have an all rounder. Certainly was not demanding selection with his 4 day performances.

Don't know where you get "magnificent player" from.

Selectors don't have to pick players on form. Otherwise Cricket Australia would be able to save money on paying selectors and instead print out the Batting and Bowlng averages from the domestic season and pick the best 6 Batsmen. The best performing Keep and the best performing 4 bowlers.

Doesn't work like that though fortunately.

Symonds was originally picked for the Sri Lankan tour of 2004 and simply because at that time his performance in ODI's was irrestible. Normally ODI fom has less credit when pushing for test selection but in this instance Symonds was proving to be such a dynamic player that he had to be picked.

Of course he didnt cement his place until 2 and a half years later at the MCG against England. Fact is, he was one of our best batsmen in the Windies, a very useful off spin ball and a electric fieldsmen.

This tour i have never seen so many cover fielders for Australia diving over the top of the ball and i can harldy remember anyone hitting the stumps from a throw.

I think most would agree that as soon as possible a spot has to be found for Symonds. Obviously he has been dropped for discipline so you cant just give him his spot back but rest assured, if we go down in this series by a hefty margin then all it will take is a couple of good knocks in the 4 day game and an improved attitude for Symonds to be dusting his Baggy Green and wearing it with pride.

They might be waiting a while.

Come on mate, show a bit of Queensland Spirit ;).

Seriously, i think our next 4 day game is on the 4th of November, hopefully Symo can get some time at the wicket and make a good score.

Because really, we are a better side at international level with his presence. Although i totally agree that if his attitude is wrong then his best to be somewhere else.

But i still love him whatever he does.

Here is another 'strange' incident with Andrew Symonds which may indicate his dislike towards "non-players" so to speak which was documented in several articles after he was sent home. Incidents such as Symonds saying that a portion of the bar was for "test players" only and what not.

It's hard to tell whether its just a playful push or something a bit more then that. Either way, it is slightly disappointing when someone offers to shake your hand and you push him in the chest.

Isn't it more accurate to say that you'd like to see Watson replaced at number six by Symonds, and White, our spinner and number eight, replaced by a fourth quick?

I don't even think Symonds will be required to score runs at state level.

Does anyone really expect him to turn it on for Queensland?

He hasn't done anything so far. I can't see him knuckling down and churning out runs for his state.

The national selectors will have to make a call on Symonds regardless of his domestic form, because I don't seem him forcing his way back into the Test side through sheer weight of runs at that lower level.

There will come a point where it will be a case of, "We know what he can do - has he been punished sufficiently?"

Are they going to leave him out of the ODI side? Probably not.

If he's eligible for the ODI side, then he's eligible for the Test side. And it's at that point that they need to consider whether Symonds is part of our best XI.

He would be bloody handy. As said we need everything he can give. Aggressive batting, energetic fielding and handy bowling. Whether he is the great all rounder we all looking for or not he is a match turner. Just has that ability to hit a quick fire long or short innings, pull a brilliant catch or run out from nowhere or sneak a wicket. The Australian cricket team is crying out for it.

However as much as I love him if his attitude has not improved (worrying this would be a problem for a 33yo) then I don't want him picked and I very much understand/support him not touring India.

Despite his poor recent state form I'd be more worried about his interest in the game. Hopefully he can satisfy cricket Australia as well as his team mates and get back in but i'm hopeful rather than confident.
