Make no mistake, they are the worst team in the competition at the moment.
They have issues off the field and on the field. Administration is a joke, their leader is out injured, probably never to return, support is down, crowds are down, profits are unheard of.

Brisbane is just as an important market as Sydney in the grand scheme of things and everyone loves the Fitzroy Lions - the competition is better off to have that link to them, it needs it I believe.

If Sydney deserves a "COLA" then Brisbane surely deserve some extra help as well. Yes a lot of their predicament is their own doing (see poor admin) but in the interests of a strong competition it isn't good for any team to be like Brisbane is right now

COLA - Cost of Losing/Lions Allowance

I don't think it has much to do with that as much as the recruiting aid Brisbane had. Voss made a good point about their academy's gifting them the better part of their premiership sides.

Our admin is terrible, all our fans have known it for years. Instead of properly resolving it last year, the AFL forced us with Sharpless and we're no better off. We don't have have a CEO either.

We've made one finals series in the last 10 years and we don't look going vaguely close any time soon. Even Melbourne have made more in this period of time. The AFL left us out in the cold for years not realising the challenges we have to face compared to every other club. To their credit the lads at AFL House in the last few months have gone - "oh shit" and started to realise the extent they left us out in the cold. But despite this the AFL have only ever seemed bothered with GC/GWS/Sydney and they won't bother helping us out until GC/GWS win a flag sadly.

It seems Brisbane is the red headed step child.

Overall, the AFL have made a bed of inequity but are desperately trying to put on covers of equity. Those covers don't quite cover the bed and Brisbane are the corner that are missing out at the moment

Sounds stupid, but it would ensure that the club remains financially sound, would get rid of the current board, and allow them to start afresh

It would also reduce the cost on the rest of the comp, and help with promotion of the game
I'm guessing you don't know much about Qld politics?

I know it will not be popular but given their on field and off field position I think the AFL need to give Brisbane a priority pick this year with the idea that they trade that priority pick for experienced players.
And look how well that worked out last time. GFCG end up with Martin and O'Meara.

Members tried that by forcing an EGM which was successful. However the AFL stepped in and demanded the EGM did not happen otherwise they would cut their funding. Hence we end up with what we have now (including a chairman parachuted in by the AFL who had so much personal invested interest in what was our potential new facility, that's now failed to receive funding)

Make it a rule rather than an understanding. Tell Brisbane that they are being given this high pick but if they do not trade it then they will lose it.
Clubs will still screw them over. If they know Brisbane will take whoever for it. Better a C grader than lose the pick.

They have been a bad team to a really bad team for almost a decade now.
And whose fault is that?

Unless they address the reasons they've been crap then they'll just continue to be crap while unnecessarily impacting on others.

It is not surprising their fans are not turning up.
There's more to it than that.

They were gifted success once & it didn't work.

Why do it again?

No doubt the Lions couldn't capitalise and build a strong foundation on their success (success built on the AFL's rules and handouts). But the fact is that the AFL builds a competition based on inequity and then tries to cover over the bits that are a bit too much unequal.

The AFL have pretty much cut the Lions off from the feed, a Lions that they helped build and a Lions that relied on the AFL. They are then responsible for the position of them now.

So I suppose the question is does the AFL try to continue to balance the equalness (sic) of the competition by adding more weights or do they need to hit the reset button and let everyone go to their own devices?

You know the answer to that Jeff. The AFL can't not but help rig the completion - thus it behoves them to help the club they have destroyed
