The IRB will pocket AUS$150 million profit from this years world cup.
The question is now whether we can trust them with developing the game globally as this is what we would expect from them as fans.
That is a huge sum of money they got in their hands. A lot of responsibilities comes with that, and actions need to be done in an effort to expand the game globally.
The IRB needs to close the gap between the minnows and bigger nations in rugby. That means money needs to be directed to minnows, and other areas such as coaching needs to be passed over to increase rugby competitiveness.
The IRB needs to be proactive, money is good but coaching expertise is also needed. They old saying 'the rich get richer and the poor get poorer' is true in a lot of things. So a lot of effort needs to be done to close the gap.
One thing that has really made me angry this week was this proposed 9Nation competition. I can't think of anything worse to happen in world rugby. It is a complete joke to even hear it being considered. I hope this doesn't even get off the ground, but who knows some of these administrators are idiots.
The IRB has done little to ensure the minnow nations had their best players playing this world cup. Imagine how much more better would Samoa, Fiji, and Tonga performed if they had their best players playing? I think we would have seen a couple upsets.
The IRB administrators spent a lot of money on themselves in this world cup. Staying in fancy hotels, eating at the best restaurants, and living the high life while they were here - well over a million pounds if I remember. Makes you wonder were their real interests lie.
I think more representation is needed in the IRB circle. Other nations need to have their say in how they want the money distributed - some akin to FIFA's. Right now their is way to much power in the traditional hands in rugby. If they ever want rugby to be a global game they need to act and think globally instead of themselves.
I don't have a lot of confidence in the IRB. There needs to be a shake up. Get rid of the old farts and put people in there that want to develop the game and grow it to become as recognisable as soccer is.
